By specifications, you are correct and incorrect, but realistically you are further incorrect...

    Let's examine ebola...

Is the virus "airborne?" NO... So having a filter that filters "AIRBORNE" micro-organisms will absolutely work for ebola, but the filter ~~exceeds~~ the needs of the threat.

Is ebola a LIQUID? NO... But it does use liquid to travel... However, technically, a filter that filters liquid hazardous particles is IDEAL, but any ebola-tainted droplets will also equally get trapped and contained in a standard military-grade NBC filter that contains just filter media and activated carbon.

We should not equally give out incorrect info that OVER-SPECS the filters needed to protect from ebola... Is it better to have a filter that is P-100 and capable filtering micro-organisms and liquid chemical droplets? SURE, 100% TRUE! But I think any ~modern~ NATO military gas mask filter sold on eBay or approvedgasmasksofdurkistan.com would work equally as well and be FAR, FAR CHEAPER...

So I say, buy the best, if you can afford it, and find it, but at least buy SOMETHING that will work, even if it is just an Czech copy of the M17 USGI masks with cheek filters, once sold by JRH for dirt cheap...

agreed RMPL but your talking about a approved filter that is sold for and intended to filter NBC threats. I did not say that said filter would not work with a threat such as ebola. What I said was just because you bought the filter with a gas mask does not mean that it WILL filter Ebola. Further I said that a filter designed to filter one threat may not work with another. For example if the filter uses activated charcoal AND a particulate filter then it would probably be fine for something like ebola. A CN/CS filter comes to mind. If you would perhaps you can explain to me how a activated charcoal solid core filter designed to treat acid gas based contaminants and NOT solid particulates will protect against solid particulates tainted with a virus? Im not suggesting that you need a filter similar to the one I showed above, I was simply showing the two as a contrast of protection levels. Also as far as the virus being airborn or not... I believe that one is still open for debate.

Also consider that a recent MIT study in fluid dynamics found that the droplets projected into the air from coughing and sneezing are MUCH smaller and stay airborne far longer than previously believed. The study concluded that a "gaseous cloud" is formed when a person sneezes or coughs and that this "cloud" can travel up to 200 times farther than previously assumed. The droplets studied using lasers to measure size, dispersion patterns, coverage and time aloft found that the ventilation systems in homes and offices are major contributors to spreading disease because the droplets stay airborne for so long. So the previously incorrect assumption that the droplets are large and fall to surfaces quickly or simply evaporate has been proven to be incorrect. Given that Ebola can live outside of the host for up to 2 days (it has been proven and is accepted by the medical community) and the previously mentioned study I for one do not believe that I am being "overly cautious" or irresponsible in urging people using the strongest language possible to confirm that the filter you have WILL DO WHAT YOU THINK IT WILL. A quality filter designed and rated for NBC use is what I use because I KNOW it will work. A great example of this, the filters pictured in my previous post. I purchased those from a guy after the japan reactor event. He said he bought them to protect against NBC threats but many of the filters he had were not rated for such use. His assumption was that they would work for what he wanted. When dealing with a virus that has a mortality rate upwards of 90% I think you need to be sure and not assume..

So we can agree that ~~MODERN~~ surplus, military, NBC (nuclear/biological/chemical) filters will exceeds the needs of ebola. These filters can be picked up sealed and unused on eBay for less than $10 each, with the average less than $20 for the better ones from known NATO countries, and slightly more than $20 for USA-made P-100 NBC filters. You can find recently expired USA-made P-100 NBS filters on eBay for a bargain, and I would not think twice about using them. Matter of fact, I have quite a few that expired in 2012 and I plan on using them if the need arises...

Sorry to come off so aggravated... I guess the "approvedgasmasks.com" lies and deceptions frustration still lurks in me... :-)

That place uses that so that new people get scared $%@#less and are willing to drop thousands on their equipment. Also, it's ironic that on one page they ripped up "surplus" masks, filters then on another they SOLD surplus masks and filters.... LMAO

I had an email exchange with them about 10 years ago and it was clear they had little idea about the equipment they were saying was useless. They claimed that the Czech M10M was "50 years old" and went on to describe the old Russian SMH series mask.

I quoted from JANES Worldwide NBC mask handbook regarding the Czech mask and of course never got a reply.

Trust JANES DEFENSE that the DOD and military all around the world trust, or trust some jacknuts trying to upsell product? Yeah... I'll trust Janes any day of the week.

yeah absolutely a quality modern NBC filter is about as good as it gets. Sure there are civilian models form Scott and others that surpass the military specs but that being said we are in complete agreement. My main thing is I don't want people to lie to themselves and convince themselves that they are good because they bought a gas mask online and its a 1965 Israeli with a cruddy Russian child's filter and they think they are protected.

There are conflicting reports over the fate of 17 suspected Ebola patients who disappeared after a quarantine centre in the Liberian capital Monrovia was looted.

27 to 29 patients "escaped" from medical center.
                during/after looting attack by crowd..
crowd hauled off bloody mattresses etc...
sounds like the infection will be spreading in that area.

                in my humble opinion...
                all flights out of Liberia..
                all boats out of Liberia
                should be cancelled.

Tom Parry reports from the Ebola front line, where the World Health Organisation admits the death toll of 1,145 “underestimates the magnitude of the outbreak”

an ebola story. about a nurse...
A NURSE>>> the point being..... she knew she had it... she knew it kills..
she stayed at her home... in the community...
if she didn't quarantine herself... why should we think the Africans have any type of
                    control on this pestilence...
I'm wondering how many folks get the disease wonder off to their home village
then when they die, the family loads them up and goes to prepare the body and bury them...
                    now... a dozen more cases!

Heard of someone in CA being tested. Have to wait three days for formal report, but what the news reported they think it'll be negative as she doesn't "fit the profile". I take that as she doesn't have the symptoms or travel history they want.

Just an update... Now that the CDC has made the call that healthcare facilities need to get on the ball on pre-screening for Ebola, I thought I would give an update for how my workplace (student health) at a major University is handling it...
                        http://washingtonexaminer.com/cdc-is...rticle/2553396

We have a sign on all entry doors that asks if anyone is from or has been to Africa and "feels sick," they are to NOT ENTER the building and call a number. Medical staff will the decide how to proceeded, but I know it would entail masking up and getting the person into negative pressure room. After that, I don't know, I am out of that loop...

My concern is that they ask the person to wait at the entry doors rather than move away from entries. They would not have access to any masks outside, so anyone going around them will be in close contact.

Seems it is getting out of control over there in Africa. Serious spreading... Only a matter of time now.

'Today, thousands of people in west Africa are infected,' Obama said, but 'the world knows how to fight this disease. It's not a mystery. We know the science. ... But we have to act fast.'

Why is this SUDDENLY a "national security issue?"

Found out workplace has ordered tyvek suits, gloves, and then ob-gyn gloves (go to elbows) to go over them. Suspected patient brought to negative pressure rooms after that IMMEDIATE area of building evacuated, which means walking them through building. Exec. Director thinks ebola fear is over-blown and he is a top dog in related fields, well known. Has a lot of clout...

Their concern now is handling decon, as many healthcare workers in that area contracted ebola during decon & disrobing after their shifts.

So Doctors who deal with the threat everyday and been doing that stuff for years are getting sick... What do you think will happen when 3,000 of our finest that only have a few (in comparison) hours worth of training show up?

I just wonder how things will go when the CDC meets the ship with ill folks in New Orleans...coming in from the Congo IIRC.
