"Moat" to me reads as possible firing position/cover for the enemy. They may not get in or out of it easily, but once they get in there, it could be hard to dislodge them.

Cut up telephone poles put 4 foot into the ground and at least 2 foot out of the ground will stop a 1984 Chevy Silverado running straight at them at 30 miles per hour. Wonder how I know? Thankfully it didn't have an airbag ;) They also stopped a backhoe running at them with the bucket down, blade of the bucket facing the pole.

Now smaller 6 or 8 inch poles like you find for "corner posts" at Tractor supply will NOT stand up to that. The truck knocked them over and the backhoe lopped them off like grass.

    The good news is that
    1. Used telephone poles are pretty cheap, sometimes free.
    2. In the PAW, you'll be cutting down those poles that lead to your house/retreat anyways, so this will give you a couple dozen as a starting point.

They need to be more IN the ground than OUT of the ground though.

They aren't big enough to give someone any cover large enough for a man and it wouldn't take much to string barbed or razor wire between them for a man or even motorcycle slow down device.

@Longhunter - Thanks for the info about the course!! I am going to keep my money. I did buy his other book from Amazon the other day for about $12 w/ shipping. Like you said this forum, PAW videos, and JWR's site is probably the way to go.
