I ordered the "How to Survive TEOTWAWKI" book from amazon for $8 and some change plus shipping which was another couple of bucks. A lot cheaper than the class.

On a side note the one thing I got from Patriots that really stuck with me: At your retreat build a bigger septic tank in the expectation of having guests and/or stock up on RID-X to help control the uhm well as Mike Rowe says "poo". Also make sure to check on it every few months to prevent it from getting clogged. Stock up on the big rolls of TP that you see in Store bathrooms. I would hate to have to use phone book pages.

That was the only thing I took away from Patriots and it was worth it.

First time our tank was pumped, and every time since, I'm right there with them. Gotta know the process even if it does stink.

It would be about the nastiest job out there, but I don't see why you could open the top of the tank and bucket the sludge out. I borrowed some of Protus buckets to try it ;) LOL

I don't wonder if a heavy duty "trash" type water pump- the ones with gasoline engines, I'm not talking about an electric sump pump- would work at all for this?

Honestly, if it was from being full, I think a day's labor bucketing would be worth not having to use an outhouse for a couple years...

Found this video, looks like the same pump that comes on a trash pump. Something like this could be made relatively easily. The water part would be good watering fields away from convenient watering hoses. Could pump the waste on the orchards or on fallow ground, that you may put into production at a later time.

@1Admin - Poor Protus, their buckets being used to haul excrement. You are right I would rather face constatina wire than a moat of human waste!! Make a nice moat with actual stagnant water and dump in the waste every 6 months or so and you will have a nice perimeter. Just make sure your moat is far enough away from the house to not smell it!!

Ummmm sewage moat? Are you serious? The smell is hardly the problem you would need to be avoiding. Human waste is extremelely dangerous. The vectors that would be attracted by such a moat would sooner or later, most likely sooner, find their way into your house. Thus then transferring any and all toxins they picked up from your human waste all you can eat soup buffet you set up for them. This is a fast way to get yourself and your family sick. Human waste is used on punji sticks to infect anybody that was scratched/cut by the stick that wasnt lucky enough to die outright. Instead they get to be infected by human waste which will enter their blood stream and slowly kill them. Think Komodo Dragon and their way of slowly killing their prey via infectious bite.

Hope you have a stockpile of antibiotics.

That being said, to touch on the moat idea itself. It is a VERY good idea I have been thinking about. Not just to stop human traffic, but to stop vehicle traffic. Both the mud moat (vehicle stopping) and the water moat (human stopping) are food for thought to protect your perimeter...

Humanure is safe to use in an orchard. You'd probably want to compost it in a pit downwind first.

Nightsoil, humanure, is only as safe as the body it came from. The recommendation I have read stated human waste needs to be composted several months in a sealed container so the composting temperature kills all the possible pathogens you may be spreading.

As far as a general statement of humanure is safe, tell that to the military in 3rd world locations, all areas that use nightsoil on their crops/orchards are forbidden from selling their product on post to service members. I have to think that as much A** kissing and wasteful spending our government does with 3rd world countries for them to take that stand, they gotta have a good enough safety reason to do so... =)

@Klayton - No I don't believe either one of us were very serious about using human waste as a moat. I do realize that is was used on pungee sticks to cause infection if a soldier was unfortunate enough to get a scrape/cut from one. My father served in Vietnam enough said.

I believe it was merely an exercise of the brain to see what we "could" use it for and not what we "would" use it for. There are a lot of hypothetical scenarios in these forums, I should have put an LOL or something to let people know I was kidding. I hate changing my 1 year olds diaper, let alone bucketing or pumping out my own waste that has been in the tank for months only to simmer in its juices to get so nasty smelling that my gag reflexes kick in and then to make a moat out of it...no way no how.

As for fertilizer, I think I'll use something else like horse, cow, rabbit, or ....

Sticking with herbivore manure or insectivore(chicken) manure is ALWAYS the safest way to go... =)

Intriguing scenario.... have your "honey wagon" loaded up to make a deposit away from your campsite and release the payload near some well known pirate/gang areas... maybe the smell alone will drive them away, LOL before anybody has to fire off one round of the very precious ammo they have stockpiled....

elittle, I have both the course and the book. I personally think the course was too expensive($150) for what it provided. A lot of the same info was covered in his book($20). I like survivalblog and JWR, but yes I think the high price of the course was due to his publisher. I'd say get the book and do some research online, survivalblog, PAW vids and this forum seem like a good place to start. Save the $150 and put it towards some of your preps.
