I always test a starter by lightly tapping it with a hammer. But nowadays with these fancy shmancy computer cars that may not work. I might be tempted to go back to the store and let that guy know he's an idiot too. If he was so smart he would be working on vehicles and make more money than selling the parts as a parts clerk.

@KirkMcquest definitely a lesson learned. Most starters are easy enough to get to and to remove, then take it down to any major parts store (NAPA, Pep Boys, etc) and all have a starter test cart. Or you can simply jump the cables and send 12V yourself to the hot terminal. If it is still good it will kick out the gear and start a spinning. If it spins without kicking out the gear, or doesn't spin at all, then you got yourself a bad starter.
I have had one of my Soldiers spend an entire weekend troubleshooting why his car didnt start, only for me to find the problem in under 5 minutes. His fuse for the starter just burnt out (one of those-who knows why, just burnt out). He was pissed all week about it at work. LOL

Wow! So of course I never heard anything back from these slimdogs about their "reps" spamming our and other forums with their cheesy informercials. However, just this afternoon I get a "subscribed" email from them! Now that's kinda funny because after noticing in the "we will NEVER reply to you, our excuse is we are out of the office" automated reply above, I noticed that just emailing them made me a "subscriber" and I went in and unsubscribed then!Originally posted by 1Admin View PostEmail sent to offending company 3:45 pm Sunday 10-17 will post reply if their is any. I included this link so they could look at this non sense themselves.
Received a standard "out of the office" or "thank you for your request" form email 3 days ago. Have followed up two separate times about this but NO real replies from the spamming company-

Would like to hear back from you regarding all of your reps spamming my and other preparedness websites for your products. You SHOULD care that your reps are making your company look awful by doing this.
Look forward to hearing from a real, live person on this matter.....

Still waiting for a reply to my email about your reps spamming my and other preparedness forums.......
Surely a reputable company would not condone such shameless action.
I also noted that in the original "out of office" "thank you for your request" form email they sent me it showed me as "subscribed" to some email mailing list of there's!!! Could these people get MORE SLIMY???i NEVER requested to be on their stupid email list, nor for their dragbutt reps to spam the forums here. I'd be really careful with any dealings with a "company" like this.
I lost it after getting the spam "subscribed" (BS) email... I went through the "unsubscribe" process AGAIN and left this message-
"I CAN'T FRICKING BELIEVE YOU PEOPLE! FIRST YOUR IDIOTS SPAM MY AND OTHER SURVIVAL MESSAGE BOARDS WITH ADS, THEN I EMAIL YOU ABOUT IT AND YOU SUB ME!"
I ran out of room on their little form or I would have really spoke my mind. Those slimdogs are unbelievable...Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"
Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"
Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

Bought a couple cartons of .22 and did a little three-day survival activity in the woods behind my house. I went out with 50' of 550 paracord, a 12'x6' tarp, a protein bar, and a knife. Actually got through all three days this time; there are a whole lot of wild onions out there. I hardly had to go 40 yards from my little tent except to take a piss the entire time. Pretty fun, but I need to do it out in WV or somewhere so I can bring my .22 and not have a bunch of houses around.

Bought more flour, sugar, salt, cornstarch, dry milk, soap and canned vegetables for my storage. Got 7 squashes on sale for $3 and 20 lbs of potatoes--I will can them or just leave them depending on how well they store in our cold kitchen. Dehydrating celery and will be doing mushrooms tomorrow. Rebatched the apple jelly that didn't jell, doesn't look like it will jell this time either but it is too early to tell. Will be canning banana strawberry butter and possibly pickled cauliflower tomorrow.
My 17 year old daughter has started picking on me about "storing for the Apocalypse". She thinks that no matter what happens we will still be able to buy a $ .38 thing of salt. I think as part of her homeschooling I will make her read Alas, Babylon, lol.

yeah I really blame myself for listening to him. I went in the 'auto zone' for the Haynes manual, and as I was reading the guy came over and started talking to me. Before that I was 80% sure it had to be the starter. He started telling me it could be the relay switch or the ignition coil....finally I decided that if I change the starter and it doesn't work I will have to probably bring it in anyway and spend even more.Originally posted by elittle View PostI always test a starter by lightly tapping it with a hammer. As it turns out I did learn my lesson because a week later, my metal break line went (rusted through). This time I was determined to do it myself....and after lots of cussing and some bruised knuckles...I did it!
Wish I knew more about engines though...maybe I'll take a class or something.

Some older vehicles can be started by touching both terminals of the started together with a screwdriver, making sure you're holding the insulated end. Make sure the key is in the "on" position, and that the vehicle is in nuetral/park.Originally posted by KirkMcquest View Postyeah I really blame myself for listening to him. This week I did research on where to buy some grains, making my list and comparing sites.
I worked on the carraige doors I'm building for my WV homestead.
I tracked down a used Earthstove wood burner on craigslist for 300 plus pipe! Going to pick it up wed.
Shot a bull elk (a week and a half ago) butchered and vacuume sealed 135lbs of sweet meat! (will have to can up most of it when I move next Spring though)
Cleaned my AR and my 30-06. I know, it's not prep, but it's always good to know your weapons.

I have been looking on ebay at the Excalibur brand dehydrator's, supposed to be one of the best. The fan blows air across the trays from the side and not from the bottom up like the cheaper models.
Right now on ebay:
4 tray for $105.95 5 year warranty $14 more at the mfr site
5 tray for $149.95 5 year warranty $40 more at the mfr site
9 tray for $179.95 5 year warranty $40 more at the mfr site"It's a trap!!!!" -- Admiral Ackbar

Thanks for the tip elittle. I have heard the same re: Excalibur. Has anyone else deydrated frozen veggies though? I would think that this is a golden opportunity. Frozen veggies go on sale quite a bit and I have LOTS in my freezer. It would be nice to be able to dehydrate them. I think I will bing it tonight and see what I get.
