Its 53 here this morning...with everything else going on with life right now, I have to wait and prob skip the fall garden. Son got engaged and they are talking elopement, and they have to get a camper moved (32' Grey Wolf) that they bought moved to some land outside Nashville a ways. Working on the logistics of that and the items they will need to live full time in that during some possible harsh winters. They are going to live on a farm with people they know. This other couple was kind enough to let them do that cheap, and already had water and power 30A set up. Sewer will needed to be hauled out, but my son and GF are willing to do that. They are surrounded by real good folks and cattle, horses, goats and chickens, and one neighbor is ex-SEAL. All, it seems are conservative, so we feel good about their location as they are 45 min from Nashville proper. Could be better, but its not a bad place to get started in married life.

Sounds like a good setup.
Couple recommendations from me who began doing the same thing in 1995 in colorado
for winter, some type of skirt aound the rig. Even lathe strips stapled to white plastic sheet cut from 8x10 sheets.
Not fancy and usually only good for one season but stopping the wind from going under the rig REALLY HELPS/

Dump tanks.
get a macerator pump and up to 200 feet of 1" host.
Runa on 12vdc and will dump your tank as a smooth liquid into any septic tank or actually into any toilet.
I did the latter while the rig was parked behind my work place. Just be sure you pt the hose 6" done into the toilet and have somebody hold it so the hose doesn't blow up and out of the toilet. That would be smelly and very nasty. hahahaha

I will pass on the skirting. We have talked about it, but the land owners have full time camped in CO, iirc, and they said they did not use it and were fine. I am thinking of my camp days...I slept on ground and friends slept in hammock...they were cold all night and I was fine and the temps were only in the low 70's. What is your thoughts of using bales of hay stacked around the trailer? GF mentioned that and I thought it was a good idea. Just would worry about critters in the hay I guess. They are getting a macerator pump per our recommendation . They will have to pump it into a portable tank in the back of his p/u truck and take it to a dump station probably weekly but they are okay with that little inconvenience vs. paying higher rent for an apt in Nashville. I told they to get a schedule to do the "camper" stuff on one day of the week and stick to it. Grey water is okay to dump on land and land owners are okay with that.

Edited to add: they could then use the hay for their spring/summer garden that they want to have.

Sounds like your son and DIL are off to start an exciting adventure! Best wishes to them. The hay could be a big rodent magnet?

Fall temperatures jumped on me quickly - from high 80s to low 70s daytime, and 70s nighttime to low 50s nighttime. Grow inside and prep your gardens for spring planting. All I'm doing is watering existing plants plus the squash seed container, which may or may not do anything.

Hay bales work too. some folks wrap the bales in 50 gallon contractor bags to the keep the rain water our of the straw.

Contractor bags are pretty tough to chew through, I would think. I was thinking about some kind of wire mesh that wouldn't have big enough openings for rodents to get through.

Picked a few peppers this morning - there are still some out there that are too small to pick just yet.


My spaghetti squash seeds have sprouted! Still waiting for the acorn and butternut squash to come to life.


It was 50^o when I got up. I may have to think about digging out the frost blankets pretty soon.

I have three pepper plants barely holding on that I get2-3 peppers every 2-3 weeks....everything else has been pulled and in the compost or waiting to be tilled into the ground.

My first acorn squash has sprouted!! Okay, it's a tiny sprout, but it's alive! It's halfway between the two larger plants. Now, spaghetti, butternut, and acorn squash are all growing. This is beautiful gardening weather, warm and breezy. I'm going to put in cabbage, onions, and maybe turnips and beets in other containers. I'll water the garden as soon as the contractor is done destroying my sprayer and disconnects his hose from my hose bib😂

I did plant at the wrong time. I should have planted last month, but there has been too much chaos around here to work in the garden. A second butternut squash poked its head out of the soil overnight, so now I have two spaghetti, two butternut, and one acorn squash sprouted. I'm hopeful that the second acorn squash will emerge soon. I'll need to keep a close eye on the temps, due to my late start. For now, I'm leaving it as is. I have to get the truck unloaded because they will want to pick it up next week (trade-in against the wheelchair van), and I anticipate the flooring folks will be showing up in the next two weeks, so lots more packing to do.

Every single one of my squash seeds sprouted! I'm excited!!! I'm going to water everything after dinner because it's supposed to get pretty cool tonight.

Too bad I'm in the house keeping track of flooring installers. I told the GC I didn't want to talk to him anymore after he upset my husband, so it should be a lower drama week and maybe I'll get something done.

I'm trapped in my office while they (hopefully) finish the flooring today, so I won't be gardening. It rained yesterday morning and the irrigation system ran last night, so I think I'm good for watering. I see a couple of peppers that need picked but they won't run away before tomorrow.

No rain here for several days. I'm still trapped in my office as the 2-3 day flooring project hit day 6 this morning. Someone called and wanted to come out tomorrow to see about a wheelchair ramp issue we're having, and I said "Call me on Friday and we'll set something up for next week". I'm up to here with sitting in this office listening to hammering, sawing, grinding, drilling...😖 I did escape for a few minutes yesterday and picked 5 bell peppers.
