  • I haven't raised chickens since I was a young pup, but maybe someone else here can chime in with some advice. I have a friend who raises chickens, and I'll ask her how to she does it.

And my friend says: Must be warm (straight from the hen), do not wash, no lower than 95o, 90% humidity, turn eggs 2-3 times/day for 21 days. Springtime is the best time to start.

    I did find this:
How do you get chicks from eggs?
Temperature: The eggs need to be kept at 99.5 degrees at all times; just one degree higher or lower for a few hours can terminate the embryo. Humidity: 40 to 50 percent humidity must be maintained for the first 18 days; 65 to 75 percent humidity is needed for the final days before hatching.

    and this:
Incubating chicken eggs is a 21-day process and requires an egg incubator to help control temperature, humidity and egg turning.

          • @prc-104...this is what my neighbor said when I sent her your post:

"I would need to research that Chicken breed. But it sounds like they are doing everything wrong. No counter keeping should be done. Maybe a day or two at most while Collecting. Eggs should be in 99.5 temp & 60% humidity and tilted left to right three times a day. Pointy end should always remain down. It’s 18 days at that temp and humidity. Then moved to 99.5 temp and 70% humidity the remaining 3-4 days. When moved on Day 19 eggs should be placed on the side and left completely alone. Do not touch or open the Incubator on days 19-22. Big factor would be the age. 6 months is way too young to try to incubate the eggs. The rooster most likely is not fertile or succeeding at mating yet. A egg only stays fertile for 5 days. And candling should be done every 10 days to ensure progress".

Her husband built his own incubator that does the turning for them. They have had success each time they did it and I only know of a couple eggs that did not make it.

              • Garden is undercover again, as we're under a freeze warning for the next 2-3 nights. The wind has been blowing like crazy, so I weighted all the frost blankets down and ran back to the WARM house! Fire is burning and we're in for the night.

                • we have temp of 38, with feel like 34...lots of wind. Tonight forecasted to get colder and wind die off, so I may have to cover pineapples again. Will leave peppers as an experiment....Pomelo's are tasting good...have more to pick, and three small green fruit showed up on Loquat tree...

                  • It was 29 overnight, 51 for the high today, and headed for 31 tonight. Everything's covered in spite of the wind! Everything looked okay at bed check! Tomorrow I'll check the cauliflower and decide whether to pick smaller than normal heads, or just leave it for a few more days. I have some small cabbage heads but need to let them about double in size before I pick them.

                    • Yeah, cold here but about 5 degrees warmer then y'all...36 this morning and wind has died down and frost. I meant to cover the pineapples but something came up and we were away from house and I forgot when we got back home about 9pm. Again, I am leaving things alone and seeing how they do. Seems my one Kale plant is thriving so far. Peppers..well a bit sad looking, but alive and still have a few peppers on them. The inside pepper plants have all produced now, but not as many fruit as if outside. Have cherry peppers, Pasilla Bajo, Anaheim Chili, and Hungarian Way and Hot Jalapeno.

                          • Been dealing with a big yard sale, so been AWOL for a bit. Yeah, we got very little rain yesterday. Maybe it was enough that I don't need to water today. Lucky peppers like it a bit dryer. Need to water fruit trees though....

                            • Gardens got watered overnight Saturday, so no watering today. My grow bag broccoli went to flower when the heads were still small - compost food. Hopefully the broccoli in the container garden grow normal heads! Brussels sprouts still small but growing well. All of the herbs are looking happy in the greenhouse. Maybe tomorrow I'll untie the cauliflower leaves and see if we're making any progress. Otherwise, cabbages are heading, onions are growing, parsnips and carrots look fantastic! I'm itching to start unloading the soil from the empty containers so I can get them moved.

Rummage sale? I need to have one of those!

                              • Yard sale was good practice for bartering. We had most stuff priced at $1-$2 and people still wanted it cheaper. We had bought a pallet of clothing shelf pulls from Target. We decided to do this not to make money, but to help people out...womens, children, mens clothing all sizes still with tags and never worn. Most people came and thanked us, but some were real arsses and wanted ten items or more for a $1....we literally were trying to recoup our investment into it and that was why we marked everything so low...we recouped most, but not what are time was worth sorting, marking thru lables so things cannot be returned, etc., but we got joy from some of the mothers that were buying clothing for their kids. The rest will be donated to Goodwill or some charity. The clothes would have gone to the dump somewhere if we did not buy it.
