  • Rain can be a curse and a blessing to a gardener....

The green colored ones are Rattlesnake Pole Beans iirc
The white/purple are Dragone Tongue Beans (bush type)

    • Beautiful! Do you prepare these like green beans? My husband dislikes green beans so I don't plant them; instead I do lots of lima beans and pinto beans.

I have one potato sprouting already😁 Was hoping for some rain but I guess I'll go out and water/treat as soon as the sun moves a bit further west. Spent the day packing and then into the pool👍Afterward, my husband said "You're one tough cookie"; I had to help him out of the pool. I ordered new pool steps that are wider and hopefully sturdier. This summer an electric pool lift will be installed.

      • We have never had these, so I am thinking like snap beans....snap them and boil lightly and eat them....

        • A few years ago, a girl at work gave me some Chinese long bean seeds. They grew like crazy but they tasted horrible😂I hope you have better luck!

It's been mostly dry and windy here for a few weeks, so I wasn't surprised to find a few tiny weeds growing in the containers. I scooped them out, along with a good portion of the dirt, and tossed them in the yard waste bin. I'll need to keep an eye on that! I didn't plant anymore yet; instead I pulled out the weed trimmer and went around the front and back yard. It was only 90-something and I was melting! Off to the shower, then threw in a load of laundry and started getting a casserole put together for dinner. Neighbor came by and wanted to help us get the wheelchair lift off the truck, so I helped him and then was late getting dinner in the oven. Such is my life😂 All's well that ends well, nobody starved, and all I have left to do is go out and water the garden.

Tomorrow I'll do some planting and get ready for Wednesday's power outage while our electrical panel gets upgraded and an outlet put in for the garage door opener (being installed next week). I pulled all the extra ice packs out of storage and got them into the freezers. We'll be down 4-6 hours, so I can use a couple of coolers if need be (I hope not).

          • If only for 4-6 hours I would think you would be good if you are not opening/closing the doors of fridge/freezer. I start worrying at the 10-12 hour mark, well, that was before I had my solar system.

I am having a lot of flowers on tomatoes, but no fruit. I need to research that....watermelons are blooming as well, so I need to watch that also. Going camping in a few days, not for long, but still a short getaway...will get neighbors to water for us....I really need to get a timer for that....

            • Have fun camping!! I'd like to go but that's not in the cards.

Planted lima beans, black soybeans, and pinto beans, zucchini, eggplant, and sugar snaps, and topped off the soil in the tomato grow bags. I watered like crazy because it's hot 🔥 and dry out there. I may have to unfurl the shade cloth if this keeps up. Potato #2 is up, and so are my blue cornflowers. Lots of tomatoes, more zucchini from my first planting, and one yellow squash on the mystery plant. There are a fair number of cukes on the vine, but not ready for harvest yet. I bought a new hose end spray bottle - I'm tired of getting sprayed with treatments along with the plants! That's the extent of my gardening for today.

              • Looks like potato mania in my potato container! They're popping up all over the place. When I was watering the garden, I spied 2 huge cukes that I need to bring in tomorrow and make some cucumber & onion salad. Lima beans are already popping up. Put up some dried herbs: sage, parsley, and thyme. Thyme has already started growing back. Tomorrow I'll cut some Thai basil and more sage and throw them in the dehydrator. I got some new seeds today (variety pack) and I'll see what I can get started.

Most of the day yesterday I worked getting rid of 20+ years' worth of junk. I took out 4 trash bags full and threw it in the garbage can - how many ethernet cables, power cables, backup drives, empty CD cases and CDs does one person need? Not that many! I wiped the drives, reformatted the CDs, then cut them up and into the trash. I still have enough of everything but not the huge stash I had before.

                • Tied up some tomato plants that were collapsing under their own weight, and thoroughly watered the garden. I have one tomato starting to color, and a ton of green ones. One pepper plant with a tiny pepper just popping out. More tomato plants but enough pix of them!

                  • Threw in a pic of our new 10' gate just because; there's a 12' one on the other end of the house. the rest: tomatoes, herbs, peppers, potatoes, tomato again, sage

                    • Very nice....and the gate is awesome...
Well we took our Dragon and Rattlesnake beans to the campout with our friends. We roasted both in the over with some salt/pepper and avocado oil. Bothe were edible but the rattlesnake variety won in taste. It had the more traditional green bean taste, where the Dragon had a bit more earthy taste. All four of us ate both kinds and we lived to see this morning, however there were more dragon beans left then rattlesnake...

fighting no-see-ums this morning as wind died down on the intercostal waterway...

                      • Did you get rained out this afternoon? We had a wicked storm around 5 PM after it got up to 100o this afternoon - and now I don't have to water the garden tonight!

                        • nope, no rain at all yesterday. we were able to watch the space-x launch that lifted off at 5:37pm....some clouds so we could not follow it very long, but what we saw and heard was cool....

                          • Monsoons here again today and more predicted for tomorrow; I swear the potato plants grew almost 2" since yesterday, when they were below the top of the container. Today they're about an inch above the container rim and more popped up. Because the drainage in the containers and the grow bags is so good, nothing got waterlogged and instead everything looks lush. I tied up some tomatoes, grabbed a couple of cukes, and admired my kingdom.

With rain forecast for the entire week, I'm not sure when I'll get out to shovel, so I've resigned myself to packing some more. So far I've finished the guest room, master bedroom, my office...and that's it. There will be some last minute packing (computers, UPS's, printer, etc.) but the main part of those 3 rooms is done. I'm considering renting a PackRat container when we get close to reno time so I can just move all the boxes out of the house and out of my way. In the meantime, a lot of outside work is taunting me. I have dirt to dump and get graded where the flower beds were, 3 containers left to empty and move, and thanks to the rain, more weed whacking awaits.

                            • so, we were able to get out in the kayak for about 2 hours yesterday morning. Got some up close sightings with manatee as they came right up to the kayak. We do not touch them or disturb them. They will hang around the boat for 5-15 minutes and then they swim away....then rain came and we spent time exploring in our truck and then played games back at the camper...

                              • Sounds like so much fun! Rain again here today but I did make it to the grocery store and into the garden for some weed pulling before the rain moved in again. My little yellow squash was broken off, probably by the pounding rain, so into the compost bin it went. There are more buds on that plant, so there's still hope but I may plant another. I have one black soybean sprouting so I'll probably drop some more seeds - last year, none of my black soybeans sprouted. Sugar snaps, lima beans and pintos are up, as well as a new zucchini. I have 3 tomatoes almost ready to pick, and a couple small zucchinis on the original planting that are growing well.
