9mm Handguns, whats your preference and why?

I have had a few 1911's and still have one but the one I had in 9mm was an excellent weapon it was just to heavy for my EDC, so I switched over to a Sigarms P6 but I'm currently switching over to a Glock 19 for a few reasons. The magazines are easier to get and cheaper, the weight fills good even with 7 more rounds and the last is I own a Keltec sub 2000 in 9mm that uses Glock mags.

For 9mm handguns I chose a Glock. Stellar, proven reliability. Dead Nuts Durable. Parts were easily and cheaply available (unlike XD's, not sure if that has changed). Glock factory mags are known to be just as durable and reliable. The ability for any 9mm models to take the factory made 'happy sticks' with their large capacity.

I chose a 19, but a 17 is perfectly fine (as long as you can conceal it well...and yes I think that is a consideration, for the prepared person, even if you don't have a current CCW license).

beretta 92, hands down I have owned and carried one for @ 10 years without a hitch. they are easy to work on and parts are everywhere. The only reason I dont carry it anymore is because I went to a .45 and that is the only reason

XD9 service, which contrary to some peoples beliefs are still being made, and the CZ-75SA. been eyeballing the g19. if i can find a 3rd gen for a good price I'll buy it.

We have 2 Springfield XDMs. 1 standard and a 3.8 for my gf. Both have night sights installed. We both like them because of the interchangable grips (we both have big hands). 19rd magazines, match barrels, and ambidextrious mag release sold me at first. Add on the easy disassembly, minimal reset trigger, and deeper serrations proved that I made the right choice.

Of the pistols you have named in the original post I have used the Beretta and like it. I don't think you would go wrong with it. That said, see which feels and points better for each of you and check the carry feel. I have had pistols that feel great but I just can't carry and I am a big guy. I have had some that carried great but I couldn't find a bullet hole if I fired it in a closet, worked great for others just did not fit me.

Have had the pleasure of owning and shooting several makes of 9mm over the years. But after buying my first Glock 17 in 1988 I never looked back. Still have that first one, she's my baby. Grip fits my hand very well, accurate and tough. I have put that gun through the wringer and never had a ftf or fte. I have fired several thousand rounds of surplus, factory, and reloaded ammo through it and the gun never missed a beat. Did have one case rupture (Winchester casing) with a round from Georgia Arms several years ago during a combat pistol match, but never hurt the gun. I trust it with my life.

Personal preference:

Browning High Power...In my opinion if John Moses would have invented this first, the 1911 would have been patterned after it.
Sig Sauer 226,228,229 .... Reliable, Accurate, have never had a FTF or malfunction of any kind, with any ammo.
CZ 75....classic gun, same reasons as above.

I have never been a big 9mm fan either, but with the new ammo on the market, I have changed my tune a little.

My favorite is a browning Hi power hands down. Most pointable and accurate 9mm I have ever fired. I have retired mine many years back and they now only reside in the safe or come out for an occasional range trip. I retired mine due to weight and mags.
My current EDC is either a Glock 17 or 19 depending on where Im going or how im dressed. Dead nuts reliable, cheap pleantiful mags, and light weight.
I carried a 1911 for years and occasionally still do, but I like the hi-cap 9mm mags vs. carrying multiple 1911 mags. Will I use multiple 9mm hi cap mags, probably not... but better to have and not need then to need and not have.

Sig. Preferably P226. Smooth as glass after 10,000 rounds, and i honestly can't remember the last time i had a failure to feed, stovepipe, or failure to extract.

At the range that I'm currently working at, our most rented 9mm handgun rental is the Smith & Wesson M&P (Military & Police). Other poular choices are the Springfield XDM and Sig 229.

But with that said, If you have a range near by that allows you to rent various handguns to try before you buy is the best way to go. We all have different size hands and preferences.

for example, I will pay less and buy a Glock, rather then go for a Wilson Combat 1911. Just because I like the feel of the Glock. And I know it will work when I need it to work... Oh and the interchangeable barrels are nice as well

My opinion is the Glock. Have a 19 for my CCW and just got the 34 model. The AK of pistols! :cool:

My Glock 19 is as reliable and accurate as it is ugly. I'm ok with ugly. In a gun.

The best way to narrow your choices down is to rent all the types you are considering and try them out. You will almost always shoot one type better than another.

I have personally owned almost all of the current types of 9MM and several that are no longer made.

I have kept the Springfield XD 9MM in a 4 inch service model and the M9 Beretta.

Mags are cheaper for the Beretta and the open top allows any dirt and grit to get out of the action easily. parts are easy to get and fairly cheap to buy.

Plus, I have lots of experience with them being a Small Arms and Artillery Repairman in the military.

I have been to the Glock school for repair and have owned several, but they do not shoot well for me.

The Springfield XD was chosen by my 14 year old son for his first centerfire handgun and fits his hand well and he shoots it very well.

I also keep a 1911 in 45ACP and a Makarov in 9MM Makarov and a .38 Special in a S&W Combat masterpiece model 15, and several Ruger 22s.

The Springfield XD and XDM have a program going right now that when you buy it it includes a right hand holster and 2 mags with a mag holder and when you send in your receipt

you get another 3 mags and another dual mag holder for a total of 5 mags and 2 dual mag holders. If you happen to be left handed like a friend is, you can call Springfield Armory and they

mailed out a left handed holster for free.

Great customer service can not be overlooked.

P.S. Look around and ask around also, several other manufacturers have deals going from time to time, especially if you are current or former LEO, Military and or EMS.

Smith & Wesson, Glock and others fit in this category.

Guns are like cars, there is one that fits you and one that fits me. Are these guns for you or for your wife? If they are for her then she needs to check out how the fit her. If both are going to be using it be sure your hands feel good when you grip the gun or it is worthless. Some women have trouble with the length of the trigger pull on the Beretta 92. I would stick with one of the three major players, Sig, Beretta, or Glock. I know Springfield is doing a good job of penetrating the market but I like the magazine availability of the major players. I and all my kids shoot Sigs because they fit us really well. I let each one of them shoot multiple weapons and choose the ones they felt most comfortable shooting with and scored the best with. I personally love the Sig 229 or 228 if I want a lighter weight. One of my kids shoots the new Sub compact Sig 250 because she can hide it better in concealed carry. She also shoots a 226. I own one Sig that I have put over 4,000 rounds through in the last 20 years.
