  • 9mm Handguns, whats your preference and why?

Hey everybody, I have finally allowed my wife to talk me into buying a set of 9mm's.
I do this only because I love her so much, because I do not like any handgun under a .40.

That being said, I have narrowed my selection down to CZ75B or the Beretta 92...

Any feed back would be appreciated.

OH, our current handguns are as follows: .45(x3), .40(x2), 5.7(x1-gift from wife), and .38spl (x1-last stand gun)...

    Thanks in advance guys...

Glock is most reliable for the buck. Simple design, easy to repair, plenty of parts. I conceal carry a Kahr PM40 but have a Glock 19 for SHTF OWB carry along with my AR15.

Glock 19 and Glock 23 in my house. The Model 23 is a .40, but I have a 9mm barrel and extra 9mm mags for it. This allows me to shoot .40 but have the ability to change to 9mm in about 1 minute if my .40 ammo runs out. Both are the same except the caliber. Fit same holsters and other accessories if needed.

In answer to your 2 choices I would say the 92 because of availibilty of parts, mags and length of service.
I wasnt gonna jump on the glock bandwagon because you didnt ask but since everyone else is, I have the 17 and 26 and the 19 is my sons. The smaller guns will take the larger mags. The do not fail.

Thanks guys, but never really liked Glocks...
Ex-coworker suggested a SIG 9mm today, but I have never fired a SIG. The online reviews look impressive, but again, never firing one makes me a little nervous...

SIGs are a great weapon. You might see if there are any rental ranges anywhere even if you have to drive a ways. It's worth it to test different guns out.

If anyone wants my opinion is any dependable weapon that feels good and you are comfortable with that comes in a caliber that is readily available Does no good to have a weapon without ammunation. Anything 9mm, .45, .357, .40. As in rifles; .223, .308, .30-06,... You know.

my preference is .45 cal handguns, specifically 1911s. but to answer the question, i always liked ruger pistols in the lesser calibers.

I went with the Springfield XD-9. I understand they're now the XDM, but I got mine a couple of years ago. I decided on that vs. the .45 because of the 18 rounds vs. 9 rounds. I know, if you can hit what you're shooting at the extra rounds are just extra weight, but I don't shoot as well as I used to, and this way I can dump a BUNCH of rounds at the tango whilst hustling for some cover....

Personal preference? I HATE the Beretta. Grips are too large along with a horrid angle, the open top design means it gets dirty far easier than other pistols, horrid trigger pull, heavy...you might get the impression by now I don't care for it. I have small hands, so the Beretta doesn't "fit" me right.

CZ75 is a better choice in my opinion. Heavy, but balanced nicely. Better grips than the Beretta. Overall out of the two it would be my choice.

Can't go wrong with a Glock or a Sig. Sig 226 or 229 would work well.

I personally think one overlooked pistol so far is the Browning Hi-Power. Hard to beat that pistol in 9mm in my opinion. SAO, but if you are used to carrying hammer back and safety on, it's natural. 13 round magazines are standard, but Mec-Gar makes 15 rounders. If you are willing to spend the money on a Sig, you might want to take a look at the Browning as well and see how it fits. YMMV, but I think it would be worth your time.

Didn't CZ buy all the molds from Browning? I have a CZ 83, in .380 as my carry piece, and it's stamped "Browning 9MM" on the side. Technically, I think the .380 used to be called a "9mm short" also. It's the same caliber, just less powder behind it. I like it because it goes bang every time I pull the trigger. As for the Glock debate, they're good guns, but you pay a premium for the name. My XD-9 is at least as reliable, for about $300-$400 less.

You might look at the HK P30 also. They are making them in 40 also so if you bring the wife maybe you can do the old bait and switch, "whoops, I guess they gave us the 40 hun." Seriously though, they feel real nice, (I haven't shot one yet) and if you look you can find them for a little more than the Glocks. The SIGs are really nice, and from what I understand, incredibly reliable. The SEALs use them.

You are correct, the .380 IS called a 9mm short in other parts of the world. =)
Kind of like how they have to call the quarter pounder something else too. What do they call it, I forget? Was it Burger Royale or something like that?

                            Thanks Bull.

Actually bought my daughter some "bling" Taurus .40s (she only has to wait 19 more years before she can legally own them, LOL)
Wife likes the lower felt recoil of the 9s over the .40s...

But I will definitely do some research of the HK...

                              @Klayton

I say not the beretta. Someone already brought up the fact that the grips are too big. I have small hands as well and this has always been my main issue with the beretta. It's too big to carry concealed, has a terrible trigger and overall not user friendly in my opinion. I don't have any experience with the CZ, only the beretta.

As others have said, glock or the XD. My future wife shoots a 4" XD in 45. I thought 9mm at first for her, but after trying a few different pistols and calibers out, we settled on 45. We now shoot the same ammo and have the same mags. Good luck with your quest and let us know what you decide on. Take care.
