I've tried the cheaper nines EAA, High Point, Charles Daly but I also wasted $ trying them out.
Sure they go bang when you pull the trigger but unless your 5yds or closer I could'nt hit with them.
Then a friend let me shoot his CZ75 and man it felt like it was molded to my hand.
I bought a CZ75BD and use it for my EDC and I like the dbl action first shot and single action following shots.

I familiarized myself with his P95 (his EDC, by the way) and when a fair deal came around via private sale, I bought one. I don't carry it, nor shoot it often, but know it well enough to snatch it up and put lead on target.
you need to get out and get lead on target under stress.

My preference for decades and decades have been colt 45 and Browning Hi Power 9mm side arms. To be more practical for prepping, I have gone to Glock 17's in 9mm. The magazines are also interchangable with my Keltec Sub2000 rifles. Add 4k rounds of 9mm....a cost effective approach for me. YMMV

I had been using an XD9, and had a number of mags for it. Because it's so light, it banged my hand pretty good. Then I was out shooting at the local range, and a guy there had a Ruger P98. He suggested I shoot it, so I did. It fit. I mean, it was heavy enough that the recoil wasn't bad, it wasn't beating the crap out of my hand, and it went bang when I pulled the trigger. Beyond that, I was actually hitting the target with it. I think I'm going to change.... I like the dependability of the XD, but if the Ruger can prove itself to be as dependable, and is more accurate (for me) then I'm going with it.

I just bought a Smith and Wesson Sigma 9mm yesterday... it fit my budget at only $329. It came with two 16 rd mags. I read a ton of reviews on this gun and the only real complaint about it is the heavy trigger. Having previously used a friend's revolver, the trigger didn't seem to bad to me.
I can understand wanting a lighter trigger for alot of target shooting, but my main plan for this gun is home defense. (Before or after SHTF...)
For that purpose, I really don't want a hair-trigger during a high stress confrontation.

I only own one 9mm at this time , the H&K P30 , it is molded to my hand . I have been tempted to trade/sell my H&K USP .40 and pick up the P30 in .40 , I like the fitting that much . My personal carry is a Kimber .45 ultra tle w/crimson trace on it . In my vehicles I keep a Beretta 96 .40 cal ( Jeep ) , Sig p220 .45 in my Toyota and a FN Tactical .45 in my Denali . Of all my handguns , the P30 feels the best fitting , but all of them are fun to shoot . My most accurate would be my Nighthawk Talon .45 , but is too nice to carry around much hehe .

Dont know anything about sigmas, XDs, had a 92 wasn't my choice issued to me...big grips, open top heavy, huge pain in my@#$, that being said own 2 glock 17's and a 26. Best gun outta the box for your buck....reliable, robust, parts are easy, need a punch and hammer to fix it. Light weight and just all around I think the best one....CZ's I hear are great guns, just heavy

Glock 34's for me, Glock 17's for the wife. I prefer the slightly longer sight radius. I think it balances better in my hands. Glock's are very durable, accurate.

A Beretta 92, the military version, can/has been converted to a 96(.40 cal) by some Armorer types, according to a Military publication (Sorry, I cannot remember it.) They took out the 9MM barrel and slipped in a .40 barrel. A little headspace and guaging, and a 96 is born. Everything else, mags, slide, grips, all stayed the same. Just the mag capacity went from 15 to 12, due to larger rounds.

My first handgun was a Beretta 92FS. I was military, I wanted military gear. After it got stolen during my last bout overseas, I bought a S&W Model 39. Fits me better and still uses the ammo I stored for the Beretta. I found it at a pawn shop (looking for #1, might get lucky) and liked it. Looks like a smaller 1911.

Bearman202 ($ All) -- Your post struck a cord with me; I really think a lot of us (not all) tend to stick with what we have (or what we first purchsed). I got my first hand-gun in December of '08, and it was an XDm-9. While I had handled a lot of different guns, it & the M&P-9 were the only ones I had a chance to shoot. While I really like my XDm (own 2, 9 & 45); I really wish I had had a chance to shoot more different guns. I've never picked up a Glock that felt good to me, but have never shot one. Bottom line: lots of good guns out there, just getting a chance to shoot there is difficult. The more you get to shoot, the better choice you can make.

SAO, but if you are used to carrying hammer back and safety on, it's natural. 13 round magazines are standard, but Mec-Gar makes 15 rounders. If you are willing to spend the money on a Sig, you might want to take a look at the Browning as well and see how it fits. YMMV, but I think it would be worth your time.
The Browning Hi-power's are nice. I have a few and they are by far my favorite 9mm handguns. For me they feel natural in the hand. There are also some larger capacity mags for them. The Argentinian mil contract mags (I got mine from cdnn) that hold 15 rounds and also have a different floorplate that can be installed to hold 17 rounds. Mec Gar also has a 20 round mag for the hi-power.

Of the two listed I would go with the CZ, personal preference. I carry Glock personallly however.

If for some god forsaken reason I couldn't use my trusty 1911, I would go for a Sig chambered in .40. Love Sig.

Just my two copper pieces, but I would want a Star. As a 1911 is what I am used to, and the less confusing the platform in a stressful situation the better.

With that being said, if I were arming a new shooter, the above still holds true in the matter of stressful situations. So I would go with a Glock. fewer controls to worry about for the novice to have to learn.
