What are y'alls thoughts on DI vs piston? I intend on this being my go to gun in an event or the PAW. If I have to bugout or maneuver under extreme conditions I don't want to worry about needing to stop and clean sand and grit out of my rifle. I've read quite a few posts by vets who've said the DI system req'd cleaning during extended operations and firefights in Iraq & Afghanistan due to sand and grit getting into the action. Sand and dust are a concern here in the Sonoran desert.

If I go with a DI, I want to use a Syrac Gen II gas block which will allow me to use a suppressor in the future. This option is about $99. A nickel boron BCG is about $180.
Syrac also makes a piston block for $299 that comes with a bolt carrier but I would need to provide the bolt, firing pin, firing pin retaining pin, and cam pin. This piston system is also adjustable and can be used with a suppressor. Piston AR's have been finicky, although not so much lately as they engineer the "problems" out, like bolt carrier twist, etc... The DI, with good components, kept WELL LUBED, has been proven time and time again to be a very reliable system. Yes, it is dirty after hundreds to thousands of rounds, but the plentiful lube and the high-pressure gases just keep blowing the crud out and they keep on firing. People like Larry Vickers and Pat Rogers, among many others, have documented WELL LUBED is the key to reliability. The widespread use of DI AR's has also verified it...
Personally, there are only a handful of piston AR's I would trust...
Plus, the mid-length gas system DI AR with a 14.5" or 16" barrel is much softer recoil than a piston. Add a compensator/flash hider like Griffin Armament makes and you will literally have almost ZERO recoil and muzzle rise and can hammer shots as fast as you can pull the trigger and keep a good, tight group at 25 yards...
I can tap off rounds as fast as possible and keep a tighter group with my AR than I can with a standard Ruger 10/22... Seriously! Compensators are amazing...
I would focus money on a comp like above, a good trigger, and a good red-dot like Aimpoint Micro...

My personal opinion, learned from the likes of Larry Vickers, Travis Haley, and others, is that home defense and iron sights do not make for the ~most useful~ combination. Really, a carbine inside a home has many downsides as compared to a pistol with light attached... Iron sights in DARK conditions = potential risk of lifeOriginally posted by Tackleberry View Post

The rear tritium glow is fuzzy because your eye is so close to it as the eye is focused on the front sight and the front tritium is so far away that it is such a tiny green dot, easy to not see in stress and overcompensate "looking for it."
Add in an Aimpoint Micro that is left on a low-light setting (can run like this for over a year on one battery) and you have instant red dot that is impossible to miss or confuse...
No mention of trigger... This is more important than most think. Your performance is always better with a good trigger, and more accurate too. This is a life or death gun, is it not? Get a good trigger like a Geissele...

Thanks for the advice Rmpl! I agree the trigger is important but it will be something I will address at a later date....3-6 months after the build. I am building this without going into debt. Nice and light... Simplicity... Let us know how it shoots and behaves...
I probably mentioned this before, but I am sold, hook, line, and sinker, to the usefulness of a muzzle break that also reduces flash... I use the Griffen Armament device and WOW! I can pull rapid fire and the barrel end barely moves... Seriously easy to keep on target....
