      Garden Pic

      Here is my spring garden.
I have been gardening in the Texas Hill Country for three years now.
It is a challenge in this rocky, drought-prone, windy, buggy (but amazing) place! I learn so much every single year. I encourage everybody who doesn't have a garden to get started on it. There is so much to learn and so much may depend on what you can do. Every year in my garden has been different, things that I thought would work for certain sometimes don't work at all.

Yesterday a hose came off of the drip system in one place and flooded out an entire row of peppers that I had started from seed and nursed through the recent 30 mph winds. BUMMER!
This picture was taken before the blow out.

A garden is heartbreak and happiness...never turn your back on it.

The wife got some beets inthe ground the other day & we have blossoms on all of the fruit trees finally. It will still be a while until we plant anything else. I going to try growing the potatoes in a garbage can & straw this year.
the wife was just commenting about how many months of warm weather we'll get this year, usually June - mid Sep.
        She feels for you Blondie.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

@ex121- i planted potatoes for the first time this year. From the feed store i bought organically grown seed potatoes and followed all the instructions about cutting them up, rolling them in sulphur, etc. I planted them on the right cycle of the moon and held my mouth just right, crossed my fingers and said a bunch of prayers.
In another planting bed i tossed in a few old potatoes that had sprouted while i wasnt paying attention. I thought 'what the heck' and just stuck them in the ground.
The potatoes that i cut up have had so many more problems- early blight, late blight. I have to spray them with fungicide every 4-5 days
          And it's only May.
The other ones are already blooming and have no diseases.
Next year im going to plant them all whole.
They just seem happier. Good luck with yours!

Wow Never heard of the sulpher thing, i've always just planted them and continued to pull dirt upwards on them except when i used to live in real sandy soil where i did nothing, just planted them. I laughed one time when my wife seen me plantin some taters from the kitchen that were sproutin and goin "bad" and she said they wouldnt grow. best crop i ever made

That's some bad luck there. Sounds like you did everything you could. We have always had good luck with potatos. the only thing 'xtra' we do is when we put the start in the ground we cover it with a good handful of straw so they will spread out and produce alot. Then we cover them up and wa'la.

Now that is the size of WORKABLE land I'm talking about... Some SERIOUS planting there...

Reminder to self... Find someone with a tractor who will rip up a 1/4 acre of sod...

                        Rmpl

Our smaller garden plot with assorted veggies. It had a hard start with little rain at the beginning of planting time, but it looks like its going to do something.
The square patch of grass is my winter wheat. With our corn patch in the back ground.

Winter wheat sat pretty short until the showers came and then they took off.

Strawberries in our "Red-neck" raised beds. Have pulled a couple batches off them. About enough to fill a cereal bowl.

the first pic is what we are working on this year and the 2nd pic is what we had last year. you can see last years garden pot in the first pic. nothing like dealing with mud. we had to dig into the side of our hill down about 4' to make it level.
