Actually you do see a lot of the little gas generators for sale at Lowes marked "used" or "returned", they look new, probably bought as "insurance" during a hurricane, used maybe once and then brought back to the store.
Problem is, the cheap butts rarely discount them more than 10%. Not worth the risk in buying one that some dunskie home owner might have done God knows what with for that little of a discount.
Often times you can watch it, see how long it sits there and then make an offer. I've done that before on stuff and it works so as long as the offer isn't ridiculous.
Keep in mind also, Lowes and similar stores often times put together SOME parts on various things like wood splitters, power equipment, wheelbarrows, etc. I've never had ONE item they have done any sort of assembly on that was put together right. Sad Prepper guy was so stupid and his family clueless, he had a decent thing going. Couldn't believe he went into his hole in the ground after seeing TWO people enter his property... Boyfriend would have his walking papers once it was clear he was useless rather than a useful, adult male with sheepdog mentality... Maybe by Day 1, I guess, at gunpoint... Adios Amigo! Home is that way...
Sadly, I think that show is not too far from how it would go down... Everyone recording their stupidity for us to find later, prying their useless iPhone from their now dead hands, to see how dumb they really were...
Glad I downloaded it and didn't have to watch commercials...
