Mods, if wrong forum, please move!

Like all RV's, ~small beginnings~ has taught me to relook at 12 volt lighting!

above my bed, the regular lights (2) are really just tail light bulbs, and put out ugly light, plus unwanted heat in the summer.

As she is an older RV, I noticed that the bathroom bulb (same type, tail light, single contact), was not working, and realized that the "glue" to hold the glass to the brass had allowed the bulb to vibrate apart!

Right away, my light (above my head) came on (I had to have one pun, yes?) So I cleaned out the brass, and soldered the lead to a string of automotive "decor" lights.

I soldered the negative lead, after wrapping that wire around the brass a couple turns, just for the use of "gripping" something, my body is old as well as the RV!

I inserted the brass base, and used the sticky backing of the decor light string, to mount it on the wood trim, after cleaning the trim with alcohol.

Now I have a great general "area" light, but not enough to read by....

So the Second light was created. I bought Marine (boat) LED's quite a while ago, at wally world's boating section. I actually broke a bulb that worked, to get the brass base, and soldered in the leads: great reading light, on the second part of the dual lights same switch, first position, general light... second reading light!

THIRD, no unwanted heat, which is a misuse of the power, as far as I am concerned, if I was looking for heat, I wouldn't want LIGHT from it either!

I hope to do a few other light's & ideas for them, and I will have photo's with that, OK?

I really like living in my RV, it is ~small beginnings~, as I am beginning to change my thinking's on ~many~ aspects of living.... Like why should a single person need 1500 Square feet of living space? Yes I downsized bunches.

I do not miss my old Townhouse, nor the rent for it. the $$$ saved is paying off credit cards... then, I hope to place small beginnings on a small piece of land....

    So much for Part One.

    my life I give,

PJaster, I've recently had to make the move from 1000+/- s.f. to a 29 ft. travel trailer for a few months and just this month, to a 31 ft. fifth wheel so I fully understand where you're coming from. The travel trailer was a bit cramped, it was older and had no slide-outs. But my fifth wheel has a couple of slide-outs and a much more open floorplan, I"m still amazed how much room I have. Plus much less stress in my life, not having to face all the financial issues that were eating me alive.

I hope you are finding the same peace.

Grand58742, I spent most of the last year, NOT having a real internet connection, now I have a better location, a better wireless broad band modem, and most of all, TIME!

It is good to be here!

Brokedownbiker, yes, financial aspects are better, but I am also enjoying being able to "relocate" with out packing up finding a new place, and unpacking!!!!

There is still work to do, for all that to happen, but I am more relaxed about it all now!

More later on power & lights, I just got home from Child care for my daughter, last term for her MSW, and she gets a Night Class! I travel up Wednesdays, and sleep over, it is so good to be regular with my Grand Children again:

I have been Child Care from my daughters Community Collage time, her BA, her work.... and now, the last term of her MSW... a GrandPa & Dad couldn't be happier!

Some friends of mine, retired couple, live in a 5th wheel as do a lot of folks around here. It was going to be temporary, but after a while they couldn't see any benefit from building. How much room does a person/couple really need? They have outbuildings for storage, chicken coops, etc. and one of the best parts of SE Arizona is the weather and being outside.

Im glad to see we're not the only ones who down sized big time. We had to moved cause of my job from a 4/2 on 1 1/2 acre hobby farm. Down to a 29ft trailer with a superslide(which made a big difference). After 1yr living in it we decided we needed alittle more room so we bought a park model with a florida room that was turned into main living area. All togeher it is about 800sq and we love it. Now we a looking for some land and are going to put one of these on it cause this one is in a traler park campground. The power to run something this small is minimal and can easly be run on generator, solar, and wind. And still have all the comferts of home.

Have a friend also using a 5th wheel as a BOL. Any thoughts out there on a source how to heat an RV (when there is no propane) short of adding a room addition to house a wood heater/stove?

Well, I am so happy that folks are interested, my first issue with photos, is getting them uploaded, then a storyline with them.

About five years ago, I did a similar project for a ~forum~ that many of us know... but as a start I will leave it to moderators to say that name can be shared, we are at ~this house~ KWIM????

Anyway that project was sewing an ultralight tent, and I would say this project is bigger... that one took me a week to put together, and get online ;-)

Yesterday was mostly rest, the day before, a friend helped me build storage shelves in a storage unit nearby, but today, I finally plugged ~small beginnings~ into 120 volt power at its circuit breakers... I was just running an extension cord for a few things... Monday, I will have refrigeration!

Today: fixed my Ten Gauge extension cord to work with my RV's 30 Amp connecter... but let me back up a bit!

One item we all need is frugal-ness, RIGHT?

Well. I bought a Computer SERVER Power Strip, complete with 2 Twenty Amp Circuit Breakers, and wired for 2 120 outlets, each breaker... for the tidy sum of $10.00 !!!! Where? at your local Computer recycling store!

Things like above are odd ball objects for the store, so they are heavy on discount to actual cost ratio.... The clerk even asked me if I ~really wanted~ "that" as it does NOT have the usual 120 volt house plugs! YES, I understand that. He did not understand the cost of the 10 gauge cords were nearly $10.00, and they had factory NEMA twist lock male and female ends! What a score!!!

My first thing to do was to leave a "pig tail on the boxed circuit breakers".

Then I removed both ends of the Heavy Duty Cords, one was NEMA twist lock male, the other, NEMA twist lock female, the "box" was in between them, in the middle.

I bought new 120V house connectors, for HEAVY DUTY USE, and did the correct ends up with the male/female connectors (I did things like this for a living, please know WHAT you are doing !!!!!!! )

So now, I can use the cord as twist lock ends, by plugging the regular house 120VC connectors together, OR if I use the twist locks together, I have a very heavy extension cord, capable of easily carrying 30 Amp loads, though I will only be maxing at Twenty Amps, as I will be removing the overhead Air Conditioner.

My final step, was a simple purchase of an adapter, NEMA 20 House to RV spec 30 Amp. NOW I can reach the provided single use 20 Amp Circuit. IOW, this is a dedicated 20 Amp service NOTHING else runs on that breaker!

the twist locks are out in the weather, so I used Liquid PVC 'tape' to seal ALL potential gaps that could cause a short, if water gets inside.

I am a regular user of Liquid PVC 'tape' it costs about $6.00 at the Orange Big Box Store. I have Green, White, Black & Red, the colors needed for RV use!

I rested in between that project, I wear out easily.... played with my sounds, I have tens of hourse of High quality MP3 downloaded as hour segments, of Folk, bluegrass & Cowboy Cultural Music, that is Pre Country & Western, you all! ;)

I finished the day with installing a Sealed Unit LED Brake & Tail light unit, my old rear Right Turn & tail lights blinked with vibration, and that gives cause to STOP, if a LEO sees you driving that way. I wrote the wire color codes, in pencil, right on the back of the RV, along with the OLD RV color codes! No, they are NOT the same!

OK, that is enough for tonight, I promise, I will down load my phones photo's, and process this all for you soon, OK?

I'm working on a similar plan, i.e. wanting to be mobile for awhile. I have the fifth wheel now with plenty of living space and a reasonable amount of storage. I have a Dodge Diesel one ton dually truck to pull it with (hitch is being installed next week). I'll be wandering around the western US spending some time in areas that look attractive for settling in. I decided that I want to stay in an area for long enough to really determine if it is the RIGHT place or not; it is hard to make a good decision if you are only there a few days. Once I find the place that calls to me, I plan to buy some land and build a shop/garage and a roof to park the fifth wheel under. I doubt I will build a house, I am quite comfortable in my little RV.

Keep up the narrative, PJ, you are supplying a lot of us with great information and ideas while you are getting yourself set up.

                      Thanks!!!!

You may have an interest... www.backwoodssolar.com under the "find an article" is a good DIY article on how to add a solar charger panel to an RV.

                              FYI to all interested....

I have just uploaded my photo's to photobucket, after remembering that was where my account was..... ;)

                              then a new password...

and of course did I mention, I was using my new Iphone? I hate it, maybe, I love it, maybe....

But it does only one size photo: 2592 X 1936 pixels IOW huge.

I have worked with my graphics program, to make a few smaller, and once I get a script written, I will add to this thread .... and if there are questions, I will field them as best I can

Sorry for the delay, but my refinishing the roof turned out Great, please, I'll get that up after I do the LED lights!

and Yes, if your in an older RV, you will want to know about http://eclecticproducts.com and their "Coat-It" marine (boats) grade Epoxy, "above and below the waterline" but Prep, Prep, Prep your roof first!!!!

that was 20+ hours alone, and 8 hours to do what I did for my RV, YMMV.

                              Later!
