  • I shot my first deer of my life today!

Oh yeah!!!! Ole boy done got a lil redneck in him!

Matt, OWA's thanks for the emails of congrats! It was so awesome!

Got to my spot about 6:45 am. My stand (well the one that was left out there--- I am claiming it) sits over a stream with 2 small waterfalls. So I sit above the falls noise.
Sat for an hour, played some games on my phone, read some S&P, FB, etc. Bout, 8:15 I was texting back and forth with my brother and my buddies that were also in deerstands today. It was like 41 degrees and clear so it was a perfect morning. My lil bro told me he had seen 3 does but no clear shot.
My buddy A hadnt seen nothing.

I texted my wife and told her about 30 more mins and I was coming home. And that we were going to WallyMart to get me some cold weather hunting gear later.

Maybe 10 mins after that, some movement to the left. Saw a young doe, thought it was a puppy. As it got within 10 yards, I saw ole boy playing the perimeter. She was being pursued by ole lovebug.

I was so dang nervous. I kept thinking "holy crap, this cant be happening, I am going to get one of em" Now remember, this is the first time I have ever in my life went hunting in the morning. I have done 3 afternoons and not seen a thing.

So she came onto the creek about 30 yards in front of me and started drinking. He kept 20 yards past her on the perimeter. I put her in my sights just incase he stayed covered. As I saw him creep in the distance and got into a small window of a shot, I pulled the trigger and realized the safety was on. Crap. That click had the doe look up at me but she went back to drinking. He walked another 4 feet and gave me about a 5ft diameter window through some trees for a shot.

    BOOM!

Nailed him! 55 yards out, that .308 missile hit dead bullseye. I have never shot a more perfect shot in my life. He went nuts rolling. She went back to get another sip or two before she bolted. I had a shot on her but my wife would have killed me if I had 2 bills at the processor. And I didnt want to drag 2 out.
I was so nervous and shaking. The adrenaline mixed with the cold was almost unbearable. I had never done anything like this. I texted my brother and my buddy. No one believed me. My buddy finally called me and I was so shaky I almost dropped the phone. We talked for a few and decided I had smoothed down it was time to go track it. He was 45 mins away but wanted to be there for me to help pull it out. (Me, him and his wife all got our hunting licenses together this year, its all of our first year).

So I walked down the trail to the spot where I shot him and there he was, 15 yards away, already lifeless. It was a weird but VERY exciting feeling. Not knowing how to field dress, I figured if I drug him back closer to my other buddies house (where I was hunting) he could help get him closer to the vehicle. So I drug this 140-150lb buck about 100 yards before my buddy came down. His 4 wheeler wouldnt start so we teamed up and drug it another 100 yards to a small clearing. Since I had to dress it we went back to the house for coffee to wait on my buddy and his wife.

They got there and handed me the knife. I will be honest, I didnt want to do it at first because I was already late for cutting my MIL's grass. I would have rather paid the $15 for the processor to do it. But we all talked about it and it was only right. He warned me about the "smell in the steam".
Not to get too graphic but I cut that ****** open, ripped everything out and didnt gag once! I was amazed and how easy it was.
(*Note, buying a gut knife tomorrow, didnt have one and my buddy saved the day with his. Also, good thing I had some medical gloves in my first aid kit.)

It was an amazing experience for my first time. And I didnt get one drop of blood on me. It was a clean shot, went right through the shoulder, it either broke his leg or he did when he was ground rolling.

When we got to the processor, they were all amazed that I hit one that big on my first morning hunt ever and did it all by myself. He cut the rack off for me to save.

In the attached pics you can see my 4 pointer, the lane, the edited lane with the tight spot I pegged him through ( my buddy was amazed that I pulled off such an accurate shot through a tight window) and just a "instagram pic" of my missiles.

I know this was long and probably not as good as some of you veterans but man this was a great day. I told my wife that it was a weird feeling and that at that moment it made me feel like a MAN. She said that I needed to come home and build her a table then.... LOL

    SWEET! CONGRATS!!

First one is always the most fun. Popped my first one in the head at about 75 yards just after dusk. She pulled her head up at just the right time (not for her I guess) and boo-yah she dropped like a tons of bricks. I took some breathes as I reloaded, popped her again before leaving the stand just to be sure- nothing sucks worse than tracking a wounded deer at night.

Moved my stand yesterday to a spot near where I capped one last year. It's practically a deer interstate down that way. Just getting cool enough down this way to start going out. We butcher at home so it needs to be relatively cool to make it happen.

The heart racing, excited thing is perfectly normal. A great time to try your tactical breathing exercises to bring your heart rate back down also :)

    Congrats!

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Good job on the clean kill!outstanding!Looks like the kind of deer that will make great roasts and sausage.......hmmmm....venison....now I'm drooling....and the reason why you didn't gag was because you didn't gutshoot him, or nick open his belly. That's a pow'rful stench if ya do so...even squirrels stink if you nick open their guts.

Oh it stunk alright, just didnt bother me. I guess I was concentrating so hard it didnt phase me. I did accidentally hit the stomach and all them yummy acorns came out!
Its funny because when I was cleaning him out with the water hose, I stepped in the water/mix. I had to ride all the way to the processor with that smell in my truck. Black n Mild cured that.

Heh! Good on ya then. :) Nothin' like a lil' gutjuice to tan them boots a little extra! ;) I don't get bothered by innard stink either until I've cleaned out about 4 dozen fish or so.

gut juice...lol..i hate that smell...but its a weird smeel if they eat corn.....its like mash for whiskey meets barf...it just lingers LOL>

great shot and job. Hopefully i can get some woods time, but it'll be with my little one. and on public land so maybe i'll get lucky with her along.

gutting ist he hard part for me its the warmth, sticky wetness that gets me,,smell not really, but the combo ofthe senses you feel ( i dont wear gloves)..but ucthering. Not one problem with that at all. we butcher our own, and make our own sausage when we harvest one.

the shakes, jittering, studduring, and hyper feeling is normal.
So is the " i just killed something" feeling you had when you tracked him down.
Me i just say thanks, say a small prayer to the animal and to god for helping me provide for my family. Guess im a hippy at heart i guess.....i never take risky shots..its a respect thing i guess for me..again guess im part hippy.... lol

              again CONGRATS.

congrats man the first one is always awesome. welcome to the world of hunting lol
Whats the point of having and not knowing how to use? You dont have a car and not know how to drive it do you? Having the tools for the job is worthless with out the knowledge of how to use it!

I'm really excited about my husband going hunting with Matt this week. I'm having visions of a freezer full of venison and a deer hide to tan :-) This will be his first time hunting here in Oklahoma. And hopefully his first deer.

Thanks everyone. This was one of the coolest things I have ever done. Now I have the itch and I am going after big daddy. I guess I could shoot a doe or 9 to fill up my card but I may get enough meat off of this one for a lil while. Maybe 1 more this year just to fill the whole freezer completely. I dont get a lot of extra free time to go and the place I hunt now, well its days are numbered due to the landowner may move soon. So I take every chance I can.

I have some friends that have had some monster bucks and now I want one.

Oh and on this one, I went all yuppy on em, no camo, no scent blocker. Just me and my rifle, and that deadly accuracy that I possess....lol. All those dry firing exercises paid off. :)

Me and the boy stripped the skull cap clean today. I have just the cap soaking in bleach and I am going to try and make a home made mount.

Welcome to the brotherhood my friend. You are different now.

Gutting a deer is not too bad after you've done a couple. In my old age I kinda look forward to it, seems thats the only way I can get my hands warm. ;)

that "stuff", well it can be done without it but that stuff does make the diffence in getting close IMO. Monsters are nice but I worked just as hard for my smallest doe as I did for my biggest buck. Where we hunt we cant use 4wheelers and it's the drag or cart. Well it just makes it worth it. I enjoy the real hunt, the time in the woods the family n friends, the work involved, a sense of accomplishment, watching my kids grow to the point that they have begun taking care of me. The kill yep its part but not all. Just wait till your youngun is old enough to hit the woodline with ya! I always get excited come fall, neck swells, head itches, start marking my territory LOL. Look at the skills it took to accomplish it from field to table, man thats something cant everyone do. It's hunter/warrior tradition Tsalagi. You just put a higher protein meal out that never saw styrofoam and learned to control the beast within. There will be some you will need to track, have patience, mark the blood, get on the hands n knees if needed, have a second set of eyes to watch while you work and make ever expanding circles till ya pick it back up. You will see, hear, smell and sense things no computer commado will ever understand.
