i really like a little ham, sausage, beef, etc, with my beans and rice.
(and this would be a good time for someone to remind me to cut back on the pork!)

do you have any freeze dried meats? ( or other "storage" meats) or a recommendation for a source?
anyone have a good source for a reasonable price?

For real meats (not TVP) in your long term storage, you'd need to look towards freeze dried or MRE meat entrees.

That being said, their is nothing wrong with TVP. We use it on a regular basis in soups, with rice and beans, etc. Gives flavor, some meat like texture and is better for you (IMO) than taking in a lot of swine (pork).

Mountain House products with meat would be a good bet. Instead of buying the blended entrees- i.e, Spaghetti with meat. Buy just the freeze dried Chicken, FD pork, etc. That way your getting more meat and less filler i.e, spaghetti which is cheap.

Add the FD meats in a little at a time with your normal fare. At home a couple months back we opened some FD chicken we bought in 98 or 99 and started adding some in a little bit with the rice and beans when cooking. Added a little more protein and flavor to the mix.

@Lowdown you mean Trichinosis? BAH, that is not a valid enough reason in my book. It can be killed if you cook the meat. Not to mention, it is actually a parasite found in all wild carnivores, and some omnivores (just more common in pigs for some odd reason-I think just by the sheer fact we eat pigs and not bear meat is why we detect it more in pigs :) )

Just remember to always COOK your meat to the proper temperature:

Cook beef, veal, and lamb roasts and steaks to at least 145

I don't think Trichinosis is the issue. Most commercial pork is fed commercial food with enough antibiotics in to kill any worms or bugs. Some folks just prefer a healthier meat like chicken or rabbit. I am guilty of consuming swine. But I understand some folks don't eat it and that is their choice. Of course, me and Georgia Boy know where to get the best sausage in the world, and it is whole hog.

i don't want to start a debate on the subject, but 2 reasons to "cut back on the pork

." 1. a few know i'm no skinny feller, and 2. a few on here know, i've been trying to read the scriptures

the only thing that i can think of is if you aren't getting enough fat as there's not much fat of rabbits or chicken

Yes, please do NOT forget, we DO NEED fat in our diets!! It is how God made our bodies function so well.

I still remember teaching my students the importance of fat in subsistence flavor/taste. Each was given two cookies, one Chips Ahoy, and one Chips Ahoy Fat Free. They had to tell me which one was fat free to get their free credit for the day... NOBODY failed this test... :)

Rabbit Starvation is what will kill most of the "I will just head to the woods and live off the land" zombies. They will kill only meat have no other stores and will starve. This will be more predominate during the cold months when fat reserves are needed sporadically to operate. I used to be there in my younger years of thinking. Then I saw it firsthand across the pond and changed my thinking real fast some years ago.
