I think that is probably right, there does need to be a balance, just enough guns for protection and hunting, just enough food to...well feed you for a while until you can get more.

Consider this also- if you plan remotely well you won't be needing to shoot every day. However no matter what you have to eat pretty much every day.
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

Great topic, I've been around guns all my life, I'll always own guns. But I recently came to the realization that I personally don't need 9 pistols. I am in the process of selling a few as well as a rifle or two. I am planning on using the money for other preps, mostly food. It is always hard to sell a gun, but I when I faced the facts, it seems like the better thing to do. My family and friends all have guns of their own and I am really not comfortable with the idea of trading or batering away weapons when "it" happens. I figured I can't eat my guns, but at the same time I need to protect what is mine. I'll still probably be a little heavy on the gun side(I'm not a one gun guy), but I am going to balance out as best I can.

a local friend is great competitive shooter. active in pro gun organizations. we both talked at length about all the "what if's "
          we both saw problems coming.
when the discussion got to food, his response was always. "with my guns and my ability with them, why do i need to store food."
          and then he'd laugh.
i thought he was joking, but after a while, i began to realize, that maybe he wasn't joking.

After you have a basic battery, you are all set on weapons. Once you have trained on your weapons and know how to use them well, maintenance training is cheap. The cost of training ammunition is reasonable unless you get crazy. A couple of hundred rounds a year through your pistol and rifle will keep you in fighting trim. Burning a lot more ammo won't necessarily increase your skills much.

You may never need to shoot someone, but you will surely need to eat and feed your loved ones.

You can have WAY too many weapons. You can't ever have enough food. I would rather have a single weapon with a few hundred rounds and 3 years food instead of an armory and 6 months supply of food. If I could, I would store 100 years supply so I could hire security and help rebuild my community. You can't have too much food. There's going to be a lot of hungry people out there.

here are the only assault weapons we have, if 5-10-30 people or what ever come to take our supplies, they just have to decide which 2 they want to bury. we have no intention of getting into a fire fight with anyone. we'll trade, barter and hopefully use our brains instead of blood to get along.
