  • Two crimsons went soft and squishy, so clipped them. Picked the cuke and pulled the vines yesterday. Tried to pollinate the red kuri as it seems like a lot of my pollinators are gone. All my kuri are dying and I think they are not getting pollinated so I did one yesterday. Picked the rest of my carrots, so have a handful of carrots for some salads at least. Had 4 of the 6 pepper plants I planted inside in Aero Gardens sprout and grow. Reseeded the other two and waiting....Have 18 of the 20 Mulberry stems growing green leaves so that is promising....

    • Yay for the mulberry stems!! Hopefully your hand pollination will be successful. All I have that is anywhere close to harvest is a couple of turnips and a handful of lima beans. That reminds me - I need to go out and water the starters.

      • Gonna plant me some more mulberries...maybe by spring I can give some to neighbors or sell for a few $$$....I have them in ground now, but will transplant them soon into some pots....peppers and mulberries may be what I am good at...

        • Even the best gardener doesn't stand a chance against a flooding hurricane😂 Take all the lessons learned from this season and put them to use for the next season.

Not much to do in the garden right now: water, pull the occasional weed, watch college football.....

            • No updates on the gardens - watered and looked at everything. If I don't see seeds germinating in my starters in the next couple of days, I'm going to replant. The plants in the container garden are doing very well, but I need a lot more of everything to have enough to eat and put up for later.

              • lost one more crimson, have three left and the vines are iffy to say the least, but we will see as plants want to thrive. The one ali baba watermelon is still healthy, but seems to have stalled in growth. Noticed two Red Kuri squash which looks like they have made it past the stage where the others died...so that is promising. Have 5 of 6 pepper plants growing in the aerogarden. The leaves on two of them are huge...never seen pepper plants with this large of leaves. Tomatoes, well we will have to see. The plants continue with the blight despite my attempts to control. Just hope the fruit can come to maturity.

Cleaned up a bit more of the dead plants/vines that Ian destroyed. What a mess he left behind in my garden. We had some fence damage so got that repaired yesterday. SIL comes into town today, so that will be nice.

                • I'm going to have to replant seeds for my starters, but couldn't get to it today, as we had VA in Lake City, then home to do everything I didn't get done during the day. Cable modem decided to go on the fritz, so I replaced it and now all is good in TV/internet land. Tomorrow I'll replant my starters and cross my fingers.

Enjoy visiting with your SIL - family alwlays comes first.

                  • 1 broccoli, 1 onion, 1 carrot sprouted, so I reseeded today and we'll see what happens. One of my new beefsteaks is flowering and may produce if the cooler weather doesn't chase it away. I dumped a few seeds of each type into my hand and ended up with one extra cauliflower and parsnip seed, so I direct planted them in the container garden. What the heck? They'll either grow or they won't! The plants that are already growing in the container garden look fantastic.

                    • Picked the peppers outside today and got about twenty. Vines on crimsons are dyeing on two of the three, so will pick one today and see whats inside. The Red Kuri squash has two fruit that has made it beyond the stage where others have died, so I am very hopeful on these. Inside, in the Aeogarden, I have 5 of the six peppers growing so far and waiting on the last one to sprout. Of the five, I have two that have buds so should be getting peppers soon.

The garden clean up is going to be started soon as things are slowing down on production...

                      • I need to uncover the containers that have been solarizing, and move that plastic to the bag garden to cover the bags that may have contaminants that would be neutralized by solarizing. Otherwise, I'll stare out the window at my starters to see if they're showing signs of life. The cover for the greenhouse rack will come out and be ready for expected frost next week. There is a very heavy piece of spare pool equipment next to the rack that needs to be moved but I think I can get it with the dolly. I'll get the frost blankets out to cover the containers if need be. Always too much to do!

UPDATE: Grow bags with old soil are now covered for solarizing. Old firewood is restacked and I cut down some invasive vines that had grown up behind the firewood. Frost blankets are at the ready. All of the tomato cages are moved from the grow bag garden back to their rightful storage place. I finally got the last strip of landscape fabric laid down in the grow bag garden. I need to weed whack between the shed and fence so I have a clean area to put the two extra pool sand filters. Right now I need a cool down timeout😉 It was perfect outdoor working weather earlier but now it's hot!

UPDATE II: Weed whacking done, one pool filter moved out of sight (out of mind too). SIX carrots have now sprouted, so we're on the move at least in Carrotland.
Rearranged the grow bag garden to get all the plants closer to the irrigation sprinkler head to maximize watering and the greenhouse rack cover is on one shelf, ready to put on. Sprayed some nice organic cure-all on the tomatoes. Just one more sand filter to move - the really heavy one - but tomorrow's another day. Went swimming - pool was freezing😁🥶

                        • Well, one of the crimsons had a dead vine, so I picked it and cut it open and what!!! is was pink inside and tasted good...almost like a watermelon....LOL but not very sweet....but sweet enough...
I have two more, one with an almost dead vine and the other one looks good so far...

Picked 40 more peppers and gave away....

                          • The first watermelon I harvested was pink but it tasted like watermelon and we ate it all. Nobody died😉

I watered the seed starters and covered them with clear plastic to see if they can be persuaded to germinate. I had 7 bags of potting soil in my office and took them out to the garden shed after I got the big ol' sand filter moved to a nicely invisible place between the shed and the fence. I still have 2 containers covered in plastic that I'll uncover tomorrow, and then I'll direct plant some radish and beet seeds. There's a huge lull in gardening until the starters germinate! In a SHTF situation, we'd be eating what I canned and froze from the summer garden, but no need to do that. The tomatoes, turnips, broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts in the grow bags look healthy. The cabbage, onions, broccoli, and cauliflower in the container garden look perfect. I'll use the spare time to clean up around the yard, get the garage and workshop better organized, and can some soup when the cold front comes through next week.

                            • I have a large red Kuri squash about the size of a softball and still growing. It is yellow still so it should turn the red color. More peppers on outside and the inside ones are blooming so they will produce soon. Have six different varieties inside and 5 outside. Though some scraps into compost and I have a watermelon growing from a vine I cut off after the storm and a squash on another vine...go figure...doubt they will produce but another surprise.

                              • I used to have an open compost pile and it would occasionally produce a full-grown squash, although it was unrecognizable as the original since they were hybrid squash scraps. Glad to hear your Kuri is still alive and well.

The plastic from the last 2 containers is laid out in the bag garden to dry, and the soil in those containers looks very good. It needs raked out but I wasn't inspired to rake today, so I finished the laundry instead and cut back some flowering bushes that were intruding on the front door space. I'm not seeing any action yet from my seed starters but I'll give them a couple more days before I start over again. I may have to set up a table in front of the guestroom window to keep everything warm, since we're due for a cold spell.
