Several members of this forum gathered together to send some lead downrange today. Matt in OK and wife, Sharpshooter and lady friend, Karen and family and myself. Different rifles were the spotlight today with some folks getting some familiarization on the AR and AK systems as well as some of the hunting calibers. What I learned today...
I need a new stock for my AK (yeah, steel against shoulder gets a little sore after a while) Not a big fan favorite today with the exception of Karen's husband and probably due to the sharp recoil + steel butt plate.
Not getting good vibes from the Tapco AK mags. They fed fine and worked as advertised, but they are pretty bulky. Probably going to put them into "range mag" pile and go with standard steel surplus from now on as "carry and emergency" mags.
The Adcor Bear AR continues to perform perfectly fine. 200 trouble free rounds today, mixed Golden Bear and Tula 62 grain soft and hollow point. Shoots like a dream.
Tula ammo is still dirty, but shot reasonably well. More accurate than the Golden Bear overall. Hits consistently out to 200 yards.
The Burris XTR is quickly becoming my favorite piece of glass ever. Combined with the Adcor it almost made hitting targets repeatedly boring. Almost lol If one is in the market for a 1-4 powered scope, you should take a serious look at the Burris.
I'm now a true believer in Cat Tail mounts for scopes. Made dialing in increased power quick and easy.
Can't let Sharpshooter distract me while my back is turned on Matt. I feel he might "accidentally" walk off with my Adcor. Must keep all three in eyesight at all times. :D
Need to work on my hold over and windage for a .22 at long range (100 yards+). Trying to get a feel for it today and was reasonably accurate. Need better dopes.
Matt's hell on wheels with a .44 Mag. Don't know if he hit anything, but made quite the racket and got everyone's attention pretty quick lol
I still can't hit steel targets at 240 yards with a pistol :p In my defense, it WAS a CZ82 in 9x18mm. Not exactly a long range gun or caliber.
Overall, a good day to get together with friends, shoot a little, have some fellowship and even a little competitiveness. Got some training/proficiency, identified some areas I need some work on and will correct in the future.
Special thanks to Matt for hosting us and putting out the word.
