  • Range report 26 May lessons learned

Several members of this forum gathered together to send some lead downrange today. Matt in OK and wife, Sharpshooter and lady friend, Karen and family and myself. Different rifles were the spotlight today with some folks getting some familiarization on the AR and AK systems as well as some of the hunting calibers. What I learned today...

I need a new stock for my AK (yeah, steel against shoulder gets a little sore after a while) Not a big fan favorite today with the exception of Karen's husband and probably due to the sharp recoil + steel butt plate.

Not getting good vibes from the Tapco AK mags. They fed fine and worked as advertised, but they are pretty bulky. Probably going to put them into "range mag" pile and go with standard steel surplus from now on as "carry and emergency" mags.

The Adcor Bear AR continues to perform perfectly fine. 200 trouble free rounds today, mixed Golden Bear and Tula 62 grain soft and hollow point. Shoots like a dream.

Tula ammo is still dirty, but shot reasonably well. More accurate than the Golden Bear overall. Hits consistently out to 200 yards.

The Burris XTR is quickly becoming my favorite piece of glass ever. Combined with the Adcor it almost made hitting targets repeatedly boring. Almost lol If one is in the market for a 1-4 powered scope, you should take a serious look at the Burris.

I'm now a true believer in Cat Tail mounts for scopes. Made dialing in increased power quick and easy.

Can't let Sharpshooter distract me while my back is turned on Matt. I feel he might "accidentally" walk off with my Adcor. Must keep all three in eyesight at all times. :D

Need to work on my hold over and windage for a .22 at long range (100 yards+). Trying to get a feel for it today and was reasonably accurate. Need better dopes.

Matt's hell on wheels with a .44 Mag. Don't know if he hit anything, but made quite the racket and got everyone's attention pretty quick lol

I still can't hit steel targets at 240 yards with a pistol :p In my defense, it WAS a CZ82 in 9x18mm. Not exactly a long range gun or caliber.

Overall, a good day to get together with friends, shoot a little, have some fellowship and even a little competitiveness. Got some training/proficiency, identified some areas I need some work on and will correct in the future.

Special thanks to Matt for hosting us and putting out the word.

That Adcor AR is one my wife wouldnt mind me acquring from you either! The AKs are good weapons (for little folks anyway:) ) That Burris is a nice piece of glass.
Enjoyed it, thanks for everyone sharing their weapons and letting all the newbies get hands on! There was a wide range of weapons and calibers and it seemed everyone was able to decide what they liked, didnt like and were able to tolerate powerwise. If nothing else there are 8 of us that can shoot what we all have and now know where it shoots for them and that is a good feeling. One of us also learned that bra strap buckles and AKs dont mix, you can guess which one that is LOL.
It was a good day, now to plug in Red Dawn and some elbow grease cleaning. I got some vids and pistures, i'll get them uploaded to everyones personal account in a bit. Now you all go soak them shoulders down you bunch of ninjas LOL

I'm definitely jealous!! The nearest outdoor range to me is a good 50 miles away. I sold most of my long guns several years back due to lack of use. My attitude's always been if it doesn't get used, it goes away. No use having guns you can't shoot. I did expand my side-arms, though. Looking to get a decent long gun eventually, but can't seem to decide what to get. I've fired most .223 and 30-cal's but still need to make a decision (along with saving up some cash). I am glad to see others having fun, though. Keep up the practice and camaraderie!!!
I love Burris scopes, too. I've had a 3x on the 10in barrel for my Dan Wesson .44 for about 25 years and it's been excellent! Great optics and taken some pretty hard use and abuse with thousands of rounds fired. It's never drifted off target. I can honestly say it's more accurate than I am LOL.

Now you all wait just a minute! I'M the one looking at AR's. You can all distract Grand while I sneak away with the Adcor. If you all do a good job of distracing him, I'll let you all shoot it :-)

Hey Grand, tell me more about that Adcor. What do you like/dislike about it? If I understand correctly, you can use 223's and 5.56's in it. Is that right?

Thanks everyone for letting me shoot your rifles! The more rifles I shoot, the more I want an AR. I'm glad that I was able to shoot all of the rifles, but the AR just feels right. I really liked the spring loaded stock on Matt's gun. I'm definitely gonna want one of those.

Matt, I'm sorry the kick from the AK was too much for you with your bra straps. Next time try a strapless bra; ;-)

I'm in to work right now, but I'll put up a detailed post later about it.

But short version, you can safely shoot .223 in a 5.56 chamber, but not the opposite. 5.56 is loaded to a higher pressure than commercial .223. A .223 chamber shoots slightly more accurate, but not enough for most of us to realize. There is also .223 Wylde which is safe to shoot 5.56 in.

So any AR you buy should be chambered in 5.56 or .223 Wylde. More to follow.
