Someone was telling me today if you were out of oil, you could use white lithium or WD40. I did not know how accurate this was. I dont like to try things on my "precious". I know a lot of you have some serious experience in this field and I was wondering, what are some alternatives (Present and PAW) that you can use to oil your firearms?

WD40 is a water displacer, not really a lubricant. White lithium grease is a bit thick for many applications. However - as an instructor many years ago said "the wrong lube is still better than no lube."
I keep 5 gallon buckets of engine oil around. Many uses, including weapons maintenance :)This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave. ~Elmer Davis

Prefer the synthetic stuff myself. Syntec 5w-40.
One quart will last you almost a lifetime. I'm still going on a quart I bought years ago. Only problem I've ever found was it gets a little sluggish in cold weather. However, after a couple of shots, warms up and works like a charm. Seems to clean easier too.Experience is a cruel teacher, gives the exam first and then the lesson.

Last year I was doing my brakes on my truck and I bought the NAPA slide guide for the sliders on the calipers. It said on the package that it doesn't freeze. Well one night when I was cleaning the Glocks I thought I would try it and see what would happen. Well they thing that stood out the most was that it was alot smoother. I have noticed that it doesn't dry out or get gummy. I put one of them into the freezer over a weekend ans there was no change. Plus I am also a Mobile guy.

You don't want Afro Sheen. After application the gun will only shoot if you hold it sideways. :pOriginally posted by WiseOwl View PostI thought you were going to say Afro SheenPolitical Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Absolutely NO WD40 on any of my firearms. And I have been told that transmission fluid has a small amount of abrasives in it. Might do as a bore cleaner, but I would not use it as a lubricant myself.
White lithium grease is recommended for bolts on M1 Garands, and bolts and rollers on M14's.Last edited by rice paddy daddy; 05-06-2012, 12:22 PM."There is nothing so exhilarating as to be shot at without result." Winston Churchill
