  • Alternative to Gun Oil

Someone was telling me today if you were out of oil, you could use white lithium or WD40. I did not know how accurate this was. I dont like to try things on my "precious". I know a lot of you have some serious experience in this field and I was wondering, what are some alternatives (Present and PAW) that you can use to oil your firearms?
You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

WD40 is a water displacer, not really a lubricant. White lithium grease is a bit thick for many applications. However - as an instructor many years ago said "the wrong lube is still better than no lube."

I keep 5 gallon buckets of engine oil around. Many uses, including weapons maintenance :)

I second the motor or tranny oils... Lots of shooters use Mobil-1 all the time, even now...

That would be me. Mobil 1 is my preferred lube when oil is needed.

Prefer the synthetic stuff myself. Syntec 5w-40.

One quart will last you almost a lifetime. I'm still going on a quart I bought years ago. Only problem I've ever found was it gets a little sluggish in cold weather. However, after a couple of shots, warms up and works like a charm. Seems to clean easier too.

Back in the Mt. Man days they used olive oil. I like to use it now on the high carbon steel knives I use to butcher.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

Last year I was doing my brakes on my truck and I bought the NAPA slide guide for the sliders on the calipers. It said on the package that it doesn't freeze. Well one night when I was cleaning the Glocks I thought I would try it and see what would happen. Well they thing that stood out the most was that it was alot smoother. I have noticed that it doesn't dry out or get gummy. I put one of them into the freezer over a weekend ans there was no change. Plus I am also a Mobile guy.

                  PAW
last ditch effort I have even used skin oil taken from the side of the nose where it meets the cheek or behind the ear and wiped the slide areas with it.

You don't want Afro Sheen. After application the gun will only shoot if you hold it sideways. :p

A certified armorer told me once to NEVER use WD-40 on a gun. He said that after I took him a revolver that was nearly locked up. It seems that after a while, the WD-40 will turn to gum and the firearm will stop working. I believed him. I haven't used it since, and will never use it again.

Absolutely NO WD40 on any of my firearms. And I have been told that transmission fluid has a small amount of abrasives in it. Might do as a bore cleaner, but I would not use it as a lubricant myself.
White lithium grease is recommended for bolts on M1 Garands, and bolts and rollers on M14's.

I have seen a torture test with many gun oils. The best was automatic transmission fluid. Better than all of the rest and a lot cheaper.

I love Mobil 1 also. Plus for cleaning I like to use brake cleaner cuts through the crude far better and dirt cheap compared to Hopes 9 .
