Yeah, thanks Claymore and Patriotic. Storing this stuff is kinda tough... As seems the case with a lot of prepper items.
To pick up on what Grand said about having different kits for different situations, that is kinda my idea... Having three kits essentially, varying in ability. One for home, one for my primary car, and one for a bug out with a Pack. But ideally all of them would complement each other and have a some redundancy.

One lesson learned was during a time I was mountain climbing in extremely remote wilderness, where I sprained my knee severally. We ran out of compression bandaging quickly. By the grace of God, my partner and I were able to make it out... But it took three days. TRUST me, anyone who holds the notion that they are going to just rough it or bug out through the wilderness has a hard lesson to learn.

I am currently working on my med preps. As I was shopping for gauze pads. Rolled gauze ect I noticed the price of these items have gone up and it made me start to wonder how many I needed and if there were alternatives. I called my grandmother (she's 82) and asked her what they used when she was a child. She told me that her mother would take sheets and cut them into strips, boil them to sterilize them and then store them in clean canning jars. This peaked my curiosity, so I started doing some research and I found a wonderful video on utube about crochet bandages. She crotchets a rolled bandage out of 100% cotton yarn. I took this a step further and crocheted some 4x4 (plus other various sizes) gauze type pads. What I like about these is they are reusable. They can be washed, bleached, boiled and then vacuum sealed or put into mason jars. Cotton yarn can be used for so many things and it doesn't take long to whip up these bandages. It seems to me to be a good way to build up a supply, but also have a reusable/renewable source. Everyone should check out her video, she is great. I would love to hear what your thoughts on this are.

Got the washing and bleaching but how do you dry it and keep it sterile ? Do you pack it in jars and sterilize in pressure cooker ?

According to the video she line dries them in a place where they won't get dust or dirt on them. I'm not real sure on this point but I am going to try drying them in the dryer and see how they turn out. Having done some thinking on this I have come to the conclusion that you can only try your absolute best to keep a sterile field. However, in a trama situation outside of a hospital there is always a chance of contamination. Bandages are a one shot deal and before store bought bandages people used sheets boiled and line dried. While infection was a problem they did not have knowledge of infections that we do not did they have the medicines and disinfectants that we do. I just dont know, any thoughts on this?

Ditto on the gauze and Kirlex from goatlady.
I once stuffed three entire rolls of Kirlex into a gunshot wound and I don't remember how many 4x4s to fill the exit wound. I honestly don't think a bushel basket of just dressings and bandages would be overkill at all.

Did my 1st of the year MEDICAL INVENTORY and re-organization and thought I would share my kits with you all... With wierd times ahead (for many reasons), I wanted to know EXACTLY what I had and where it was (for forgetful minds like mine). Honestly, I still feel it is falling short of where I would LIKE it to be, yet I know some may see all this and may get discouraged, thinking they are so far behind others... Well, we all started somewhere, and it has taken me YEARS to build this with only medium focus of resources. So don't stop building your kits! I also hope to give ideas as well to others...

For a brief philosphy, I have several kits for various scenarios, each pouch/pocket is individually labeled. My spreadsheet inventory printout has items grouped alphebetically with location for fast access, even by one that is not familiar with my kit contents. Some kits are simple FAK (First Aid Kits, Level I and Level II), while the big boy is focused on a designated medical location. Some pics show non-medical stuff (ENO hammocks, etc...) that happen to be around and added them in the picture... The contents of the big SF pack will be posted later, as well as an inventory listing... There were more BULK supplies that I did not photo (sponges, pads, bandages)

That is still a work in progress... I need to find on ebay the handle or some way to spin it... But extractors and pullers are higher on my to get list... In a PAW, drilling is a luxury, extraction is more likely.

Soo jealous of that SF kit! You should be proud of your hard work there! I'm kinda stuck in the funding stage right now. Thanks for keeping the thread alive. Looking forward to your list about your sf kit.
