I have an idea that I need pros and cons for. I live on 3/4 acre, but I'm surrounded by 483 acres of woods, pasture with a creek and a pond. Our old landlord sold us this land because we were such good tenants who cleaned up the property, planted gardens and upgraded it. I've been thinking seriously about if/when SHTF and want to set up a hideaway for me, my husband, my daughter and 2 grandchildren.Because of my health I'm unable to travel any distance, I no longer can drive so I'm looking closer to home.
I'm thinking in the woods a little below my home. Yes, I know it will be on someone else's property and no the son will not approve. I'm going to buy an old OD green Army tent 11x11, with a exit for a wood burning stove pipe- already bought a small stove several yrs ago but hubby never set it up to use. I have an old cast iron sink w/drain boards lying against the fence, my bil is going to bend me a frame to hold it up waist high. He thinks for cleaning fish. I'm sewing bed sacks out of polyester to fill with cedar wood chips-dog bedding which is fairly cheap here. I have enough blankets/quilts/afghans to cover all more than adeqately (sp)The spot is off the road about 50 yards, right beside a huge old fir tree, the creek is with-in 15 feet down a slope. There is room to plant a free range garden and since it was a cow pasture, rich dirt. I'm going to use the garbage can toilet and dispose of waste across the creek deeper in the woods. It's got shelter on three sides and a small clearing to the front for target practice. There are deer, rabbit, dove and quail plus fish from the pond if we jug fish. I can cover the tent with an OD tarp for extra water proffing, and drape netting to add more camoflage. Totes of supplies can be slid under the low branches of the fir trees to hide them.
My husband is not involved in this, he thinks I'm crazy. This is just me, my daughter, and my sister thinking like this- and we've learned to keep our ideas to ourselves. Hopefully you're of a different mind. Oh, my next buy is a water filter to drink out of the creek, it starts on the property about 100 yards from my site.
