  • Opinions needed on BOL

I have an idea that I need pros and cons for. I live on 3/4 acre, but I'm surrounded by 483 acres of woods, pasture with a creek and a pond. Our old landlord sold us this land because we were such good tenants who cleaned up the property, planted gardens and upgraded it. I've been thinking seriously about if/when SHTF and want to set up a hideaway for me, my husband, my daughter and 2 grandchildren.Because of my health I'm unable to travel any distance, I no longer can drive so I'm looking closer to home.
I'm thinking in the woods a little below my home. Yes, I know it will be on someone else's property and no the son will not approve. I'm going to buy an old OD green Army tent 11x11, with a exit for a wood burning stove pipe- already bought a small stove several yrs ago but hubby never set it up to use. I have an old cast iron sink w/drain boards lying against the fence, my bil is going to bend me a frame to hold it up waist high. He thinks for cleaning fish. I'm sewing bed sacks out of polyester to fill with cedar wood chips-dog bedding which is fairly cheap here. I have enough blankets/quilts/afghans to cover all more than adeqately (sp)The spot is off the road about 50 yards, right beside a huge old fir tree, the creek is with-in 15 feet down a slope. There is room to plant a free range garden and since it was a cow pasture, rich dirt. I'm going to use the garbage can toilet and dispose of waste across the creek deeper in the woods. It's got shelter on three sides and a small clearing to the front for target practice. There are deer, rabbit, dove and quail plus fish from the pond if we jug fish. I can cover the tent with an OD tarp for extra water proffing, and drape netting to add more camoflage. Totes of supplies can be slid under the low branches of the fir trees to hide them.
My husband is not involved in this, he thinks I'm crazy. This is just me, my daughter, and my sister thinking like this- and we've learned to keep our ideas to ourselves. Hopefully you're of a different mind. Oh, my next buy is a water filter to drink out of the creek, it starts on the property about 100 yards from my site.

If your health prevents travel how will you move everything to include the supplies? Also 50yds is not a long distance from a road with smoke. Secondary plan in case you get booted from squating? Basic laws will steal apply even in PAW. They will be carried out differently as they were in past history such as the late 1800s but folks will still retain what if theirs or fight trying to anyway.
Other than that it's a plan which is something more than most will have.

In all honesty, I think you are much better off trying to make your HOME your fortress and making that as self-sufficient as possible, rather than try to plan on a camp less than a football field away under some trees. Living in such a tent in such a place will not hide you and offers you less security than if you were to defend from your home. With health issues and travel limitations, it is a tough position to be in, but you need to make the best of what you got at your HOME and then put the rest in the hands of your God. There is no easy way around limitations of our existence on this imperfect, sick, corrupted, contaminated world...

You have others of like mind who are family, which is a great start...

I'm with Rmpl; that house is safer then a tent; beef up your defenses. Keep the tent handy should something force you out. I'm afraid that "whats mine is mine" attitude will still be around in a paw. So you want to be on your own land all nice a legal. Can you hunt on and use this other land now ? Buy a few acres from the other guy, maybe land contract. Can't you use the woodstove in the house ?

I would agree with the above posters. 50 yds is just a stones throw away, and living in a tent will be dificult for all, especially when they know the house is just 50 yds away. I could here it now from those that are not completely onboard, "tell me again why I have to go to the bathroom across the creek and way down yonder in the woods in the middle of winter at 10pm when we have a warmer, dry home just 50 yds away?" Think about the sound, light and smell disipline you would have to maintain. Anyone just coming to check out your home, which is now empty and free for the taking, would most likely see, hear or smell your crowd. I would try and fortify your home, finish your preps and get your family onboard before taking on that endevor.

I'm with the others, it's not good to use others land without their knowledge. You could (and probably will) get tossed off when you least expect it.

Better to work out a deal and have the fallback position just in case rather than take the chance of getting tossed off unceremoniously when you need the safety the most.

The other posts are dead on.

              IMHO

Beefing up your house defenses would be your best bet. You can start buing sand bags and hide them until needed. Try and get enough to stack along your outer walls first. (stack inside your house 4ft min, higher is better) filled sandbags are good bullet stops.
If you can get more then make a safe room out of one of the rooms near the middle of the house or your basement if you have one. Remeber that wood frame houses are not good bullet stops they just keep on going. Work out E&E routes to a rally point for your family members to get to. Have some supplies hiden near the rally point, if you have to leave with only what you have with you you will be able to live another day.
Hope this helps and Be Safe and Take Care

Yeah stick with beefing up the homestead.
Cause as others have said, how would you feel about someone coming and putting up a tent and living on your land?

Thanks guys, I hadn't thought about reinforcing my home. It's a double wide trailer, there is no room in the middle but there is a extra wide hall. Sand bags hadn't even crossed my mind, thanks. The main problem is my property is surrounded on 3 sides by pasture, the only cover is the trees we planted through the years, luckily, nature has done most of what I couldn't do. The cedar trees that line the road have grown in the last 10 years and I'm not a straight look to the road. There are pros and cons to that also. We are on a well so no one can cut off or contaminate our water supply. I have lots of windows on 3 sides of the trailer- the side aimed away from the road, the woods, and the driveway. My food supplies are in good shape for just one person doing it, got it stashed all over the house. There are 2 cases of ammo for every firearm in the place, and as soon as I get more use out of my hand, I'm going to go back to re-train it to shoot. Pistols and rifles, may have to do a little different than conventially, but will get my hand eye back with work. I have a wood burning fireplace inside, maybe put the stove at other end.
I live in the south, our winters have been eratic the last 10 years or so, sometimes snow, sometimes not even hit freezing. We are allowed to hunt and fish on the property now, hopefully that will continue. Ever since the old man died, the widow and kids have turned us down on buying anymore or the acreage with one excuse or another. Hopefully soon, while we can afford to.Thanks for all the thoughts.

Curious; are you on a slab, basement, blocks ? Is there a crawl space ? You could put a berm on one or more sides.

Having moved away from the idea of a tent 50 yards away...

The questions about wether you are on a slab is pretty important. Slab is far nicer, but being on low stilts offers some opportunities, storage under escapee rout etc. You need to think about other things, you seem to do a lot of gardening. Raised beds make good cover if they are well placed, planters made from pack filled cinderblocks etc.

If you have a craw space under the double wide, install a trap door for emergency egress. If raised beds are around the perimeter of the house, leave room for firing loops. Just some thoughts.

Sands bags might be to heavy for inside the trailer. I would do the trap door and sand bag around the base of the trailer if your worried about flying lead.

Was thinking about the trap door last night, that would be slick ! You can see where everyone is going with this under the house idea. Raised beds are a good idea (but the cover it gives you from one way may give someone else cover from the other way) but you kill two birds with that one stone.
