  • Couple of quick notes. I am an IT professional and have lots of colleagues in just about every industry. Supply chains are really broken now. California, Houston, NY all closed ports. This means that what little was coming is not getting to our shores. There are other ports sure...but in the coming week I expect all of the governors to tell everyone to sit at home and dont go out or get arrested. Dont think that they can enforce that, but that is what I expect.

A friend that works at a walmart distribution center (another IT guy) has told me that only 1/2 of the trucks are going out now, and of those leaving most of the trucks are less than half full. There is still food on the shelves most places still, but it wont be long before there is a big time shortage. The replenishment time frame at the walmart distribution center is unknown at this time.

    • i know it is good to rotate your food... fifo and all that.. but. i grade pretty bad in that category.
i know it is good to eat what you store ... get your body used to it... but i grade pretty bad in that too.

now that i've confessed, i feel better..

seeing that some think the s has htf, i went to the small closet where we keep a couple of extra cans of food.
and if they are right, maybe it's past time to see if these number 10's are still good.

i found 3 1 of them i got from an old farmer that has been a friend for a long time.. 2 are labeled by the mormon org.
      08, 09, and 10.
my bride opened one for lunch... potato flakes... tasted real good... she put a tad too much water in them. but still good.

i wish i had more of these.

checking the gas containers... hmm. i wish i had another bb gun and a few more tubes of bb's

      • I "mostly" am good about maintaining FIFO but occasionally I find something buried in the back of the pantry. It's usually something I just bought another of since I thought I was running low. A couple times a year I clean out canned & boxed goods that are running up on expiration and take them to the food pantry. Then I restock because it just seems wrong that there should be one cm of empty space in there! My long-term storage will outlive me...

        • What I've done for years is when food comes in, it gets a magic marker date on it. ie: 3/20
That has helped tremendously over the years.
Of course if it's bread that'll be gone in a week or a month, or frozen meat, no but dang near everything else. I'm finally into a half gallon of scotch dated 7/16.
At least I know when I bought it.
          Same thing with ammo.

          • a person from medical community stopped by today... we both kept our distance.
            he kept getting phone calls...
one of them was from someone who i could hear speaking,
"sir, my test came in positive today.. my associate asked if he felt ok" at that, i walked away and didn't hear the rest.

1 more. voice sounded like a young to mid age.
we did a quick but sincere prayer for unknown (to me) person and others with the virus.

            getting worse.

All of my long-term storage food is dated. My pantry food isn't but it does get moved out regularly, at least every 6 months. It's more likely to get moved out to be replaced with something else I want than because it's expired.

              • Sooner or later we will all know someone who was infected with and/or died from the Wuhan virus. It's the law of averages. Just hangin' in the house so I minimize the chances that it'll be me...of course, since I retired I hang around the house a lot anyway.

                  ------------
i think i do many of these things sufficiently.
the one that surprises me is: don't drink cold beverages... it is hot here. in 80s.. i'm preparing to shingle a roof on shed. and spraying roundup and weed killer... it's hot... cold water and or cold gatorade are welcome...

LEASE READ! Doctors are reporting they now understand the behavior of the COVID 19 virus due to autopsies that they have carried out. This virus is characterized by obstructing respiratory pathways with thick mucus that solidifies and blocks the airways and lungs. So they have discovered that in order to apply a medicine you have to open and unblock these airways so that the treatment can be used to take effect however all of this takes a number of days. Their recommendations for what you can do to safeguard yourself are ...

                  1) Drink lots of hot liquids - coffees, soups, teas, warm water. In addition take a sip of warm water every 20 minutes bc this keeps your mouth moist and washes any of the virus that’s entered your mouth into your stomach where your gastric juices will neutralize it before it can get to the lungs.
                  2) Gargle with an antiseptic and warm water like vinegar or salt or lemon every day if possible
                  3) The virus attaches itself to hair and clothes. And detergent or soap kills it but you must take bath or shower when you get in from the street. Avoid sitting down in your home and go straight to the shower. If you cannot wash your clothes daily, hang them in sunlight which also helps to neutralize the virus
                  4) Wash metallic surfaces very carefully bc the virus can stay viable on these for up to 9 days. Take note and be vigilant about touching hand rails, door knobs, etc. and keep these clean in home home
                  5) Don’t smoke
                  6) Wash your hands every 20 minutes with any soap that foams and do this for 20 seconds
                  7) Eat fruits and vegetables. Try to elevate your zinc levelS
8)Animals do not spread the virus to people. Its a person to person transmission.
9)Try to avoid getting the common flu as this already weakens your system and try to avoid eating and drinking any cold things.
                  10) If you feel any discomfort in your throat or a sore throat coming on, attack it immediately using the above methods. The virus enters the system through the throat but will sit in the throat for 3-4 days before it passes into your lungs.

                  In addition ...

Experts suggest doing this simple verification every morning: Breathe in deeply and hold your breath for 10 seconds. If this can be done without coughing, without difficulty, this shows that there is no fibrosis in the lungs, indicating the absence of infection. It is recommended to do this control every morning to help detect infection.

                  • We've been taking Muccinex for a few weeks already to help be sure chest is as free of congestion as possible. It's finally nearing the end of the big pollen season here and it's very easy to get filled up with that during this time.

The few times we've been out of the bunker we've been gargling peroxide after returning.

                    • I take Mucinex (the behind-the-counter) every day during high pollen season, which seems to have gone on forever this year. I'm prone to sinus infections and Mucinex was recommended by my PCP to prevent them. I hate having to go into the store to get it, but I'm gonna bite the bullet and do it:rolleyes:

                      • suggestion... do you use gloves and or wipe off the gas nozzle before you pump gas?

just remember on your next trip to the fuel company that some folks use their hand to hold one gas nozzle before they use their hand to use the other gas nozzle? hmm. maybe a picture would help me communicate what i'm trying to explain.

Everyone thought I was weird but for DECADES I've pulled one of those little paper towels at the gas pumps and wrapped it around the handle before pumping. Lacking that a wipe, a piece of paper ANYTHING from your car.

It's just like going out to eat- everyone eats with their fingers then picks up the salt and pepper shakers and gets all kinds of gobbly gook on the shakers. I pinch one between my fingers as one would a cigarette then pour some of the salt on the table then on the food. Yes I clean up and unless the place is totally FUBAR we usually tip around 20% on average.

hmm.. where's my book by Rawles?? Patriots? i bought a case of them one time. surely someone returned one of them.

                              • all those NY'ers with property down there came south to escape a health system that is overrun. They should have closed the borders everywhere weeks ago. Some smart fella's in NC (i think it was in NC) thought it would be a good idea to drop some trees on the roads to reduce traffic. Nobody was caught, but the DOT was called and fixed it right away. Cant say that that option isnt already the play for my area, but a little more mayhem might have to slow the response of the Gov to "fix" the roads.
