  • Life rears its ugly head, again...

I get to work this morning and I go to back into my spot... put the jeep in reverse, hit pedal and... nothing happens except the engine revving!!! Yup transmission took a dump on me today :(
Park works, Reverse dose not, Neutral is now a drive gear so is Drive and 1st & 2nd.
I am so glad I have been putting cash back. This puts a damper on some of my purchases now, was really wanting some of that DKX armor. Oh well back to square one. Just glad I have the money to repair myself and not having to revert to cards or more loans. This Prepping stuff dose pay off in the long run. Thanks, for all I have learned here and on similar sites.

I'd look at your shift lever adjustment down on the tranny.
Of course, loss of reverse indicates a bad tranny.
    Luck to ya

I suspect linkage issues as well, rather than major tranny dump. Usually a tranny will give you some warnings before it fails, like erratic behavior, slipping, etc... Probably one of those linkage adjusters came loose...

It is a JEEP after all. (Just Empty Every Pocket)

Nope already checked, actually first thing, then fluid levels sniff and color check. The linkage is first thing to check in a JK. The white plastic clips are a well known weak link, especially for the transfer case. Reverse never gave me a problem but I was getting a "shudder" on and off the past week or so on kickdown then re acceleration, but nothing major. It only did it 3 times...
        But thanks

I know a fellow jeeper to have the same thing happen to him with reverse as well. I have a bumper to bumper lifetime warrantee but there are so many mods to the jeep I know the Stealership will not honor it. the jeep forums are full of that horror story. Plus I don't want them working on my heap. Then the mileage they will prorate. Already scored a low mileage used tranny from a central Fl company that dose engine swaps for Jeeps.

happens all the time. I was thinking the other day, that I was money ahead for next month, and then my mechanic says that little brake fluid leak on my 1988 4Runner is due to both front calipers being shot. I had my mechanic put on new front rotors, calipers, pads, new wheel bearings and races, several other parts, and changed out a leaking valve cover gasket. Went ahead and had new a exhaust manifold gasket installed while they were at it, and serviced the auto trans and transfer case.
Cost was over a grand. Gee Whiz. There goes the 2K of M855 I wanted to buy.

How I built up a supply of good tools is by putting the money I would pay a mechanic into the tools needed to do the job. The job gets done, I now have these tools for multiple generations (if they don't get stolen)...

Much of that work is not too technical, but procedural. Do this, then that, then this... It would have been a good day, maybe two, job. But to try to do major work like that gets people nervous... Plus, you need a good space to work...

What I lack now is a good outbuilding with concrete slab and high roof height, as my garage is too small and too short, and my driveway slopes... I saw that SouthernPrepper1 is building such a building for mechanical work. Good for him. I hope to do something like that one day... Or move to a better location with more room to do stuff like that. I miss doing auto mechanics. It is a very rewarding skill.

I am glad you got it all fixed, even with the expense. It seems very fair for the amount of work done.

              Rmpl,
Same here, I have always been a do it yourselfer. There is nothing like the right tool for the job. I have a collection of tools that continues to grow. Thank the lord that shops now rent the SST's out. saves me on buying one time use tools. Though harbor freight sometimes come in handy for that. Though I find myself going there less and less. Found a low milage tranny for $450.00. Putting it in tomorrow in my driveway. So wish I had a shop again.
I love what southernprepper is doing to his land... and how he is helping out mainprepper.

I may post a photo or two of my progress tomorrow. will more then likely take me sat and sun to complete on the ground vs. on a lift.

Yeah, tranny work is HARD work on the ground... Which is why I would love to have a LIFT.... Oh yeah! I see them for sale sometimes from shops that close or get parted out... But alas...

Just don't drop it on your head, like I did to a friend one time long ago... Trying to get out a manual tranny from a Mustang and it was stuck... We were under there looking, trying to find the catch... Oh look, here it is... I touch it, it moves, and down falls the tranny on my friends head.... Yeah, it could have been bad.... Just a headache for him. Could have been Walking Dead skull splat...

You didn't mention what engine/year/model you had, but just a tip...watch out for the crank angle sensor mounted by the bellhousing. Easy to break if you're not careful.
Many Chrysler transmissions have multiple solenoids within that control shift points, line pressure, governor pressure, etc. Note any codes prior to disconnecting the battery and clear the P0700 code (codes present in TCU) from the ECU after repairs. Also, remember to do the quick learn procedure after you have it all back together.
                  Good luck!

                    Thank tech,
Its an 09 JKU 3.8 V6 42RLE trans. The overheating transmission issue years JK that Chrysler refuses to address, to this day. Looks like rain is not going to let up, still postponed or maybe Ill start prep work. Sigh.

                              Quick question for you Tech...
To set back to quick learn mode all I had to do was touch the positive and negative batt. cables together? while they were disconnected of course. I did not have a manual to go by just internet forums.
For those of you with an 07-up jeep wrangler the "Chiltons" manual is worthless. If I remember correctly the auto parts store sells it for model year 2004-2012 and its only for a TJ... what the?????
