  • Ethics, common sense, good old fashioned social skills, respect

It never ceases to amaze me the lack of ethics/common sense/respect etc that is found on the net sometimes. Round these parts people would say something to the effect of "that person has no social skills."

First their is the guy that registers on a forum. The registration agreement that he reads and agrees to makes it abundantly clear that their you cannot do business either openly on privately on the board. The forum rules read the same way and the "read this before posting" thread re-iterates it for the third time. But he joins and a grand total of 8 minutes after registering puts up a "come to my business site and buy my stuff" post. Further when that's deleted and he's questioned about the obvious break of the rules, he blames it on the fact that the "PM's are disabled." Well that's one reason why they are disabled.. But email sure isn't, and the admin and the mods all have email addresses. Also, he could have posted "hey can someone email me about the possibility of advertising items from my site here" and he would have received a quick reply. Despite this and after being given a second chance, the guy still wants to act like a jerk. Gone. "Ba bye", congrats your the first person actually banned from this site. Getting two months into it without having to ban anyone, that's pretty good from what I hear.

Then sometimes your reading on places around the net and you read something interesting. Wow, this sure looks familiar. Hey this guy uses strange phrases like I do... Wait a second! This is MY work. OK, no problem, I'm sure he probably put a link at the bottom of his post to my original article he stole this from. Nope, didn't happen. But he did use my words verbatim and never said even something to the effect of "I got this off the net." Nope everything was written like it was his and other posters cheered him for it and even said they missed him posting stuff like this on another forum!!!

I've PM'ed the guy, told him about the problem and said "FWIW, I've never had a problem with people re-posting stuff I've written (I give it away for a reason) but at least have the courtesy to say you didn't write it." We will see what he replies..

What's the deal with people any more? I just don't get it?

Does no one understand ethics any more? Common courtesy? Respect?

Is it o.k. to go into another man's house and crap all over the floor? I don't think so. I'm always floored on some of these forums wherein a company sponsors the whole site- pays all the bills of the site. Then someone comes in with a post saying "that is $3. cheaper over at xyz.com." What the heck is with that? Is xyz.com supporting the community? Nope. Some folks hold things like loyalty and respect above a couple dollars. Would you go to another man's house and say "You know Mr. Jones down the street, he has a better looking wife than you do." No you wouldn't do that cause that would be stupid, crass and rude as hell. And it would probably get you tossed out of that house post haste.... ;)

I've spent years on forums, racked up thousands of real information/helping type posts and never once did I go in on Day 1 and say "come to my site, buy my stuff." Why? Cause that would be rude as hell and make me look like a total jerk and with 99% of the sites out there, also get me tossed. On forums wherein a company sponsored the site (in other words paid for the site, like HERE), I did the right thing and recommended that company. Why? Because #1 that's respectful and the right thing to do. #2 that helps keep the site running.

Also, you'll find in life that the more give respect, the more you tend to GET RESPECT.
The more you act like a retard, the more you'll be treated like a retard. It's kinda like that "do unto others" thing I read somewhere :D

    Robert
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

This is what has always floored me the most, especially when I watch shows on the 'hood and gangs, no matter what the skin color... is the belief they have that they DESERVE RESPECT from someone without earning it... Everyone deserves to be treated CORDIALLY, but the type of respect they were demanding is not GIVEN, rather EARNED. When one is a gang banger with his pants hanging on his butt, with his kids being raised by a single mom, and who commits street crimes in a gang will NEVER get my RESPECT, but if I am in the wrong place at the wrong time, and he demands something from me he has not earned, then he may see how large a .40 barrel looks head on...

I am guilty of the above at least once here.. But I wasn't looking for links for prepackaged ready to go long term foods, I was looking for bulk foods I could divide and seal myself. When ya folks kindly suggest I check out the sponsor. I did. I didn't want to point out that wasn't what I was referring to, I just let it go. My bad :(

there is a difference between asking for help and advice on products/subjects and out right being a douche.

There are many out there in internet survival land that wish to make a dollar by fear mongering , nothing more. Look around at all of the "survival" supply vendors who have popped up over the last 2 years, look how many blogs and web forums and survivalist "guru's" you name it.
Look how many ad's they have.....or what products they are pushing.
Unlike here, you dont see anyone pushing a product or a sponsors product or those sponsors given out free swag. If they do they get asked to email admin. Then more than likely they will get approved to plug away, be involved in give away etc. In the admins OP..the 1st banned guy had his links removed by me and an edit stating to contact admin via email for approval. He ignored that and went posting his links anyway. I dont have the time nor paitence to deal with retards like that and part of my job as a mod is to make sure admin doesnt waste his time on it either!
I can side with admin on this cuz he has heard me rant about those who show up to a forum..ramble off their web site, their company etc and even go and do mass PM's to get folks to show up or what have you.

this doesnt mean you cant say " hey guys found a great sale over at xyz.com on tents....." or " hey what do you guys think about this tent at xyz.com..."
But each time you do it and it goes to tommys surplus hut in whackenjack alabama..and not to the main company web page ( like eureka tents for example) you may get an edit or an email to stop.

sorry i rambled/ranted, it annoys me to see folks so afraid of what may happen in the future get led astray by johnny come latelys trying to make a buck ( reminds me of 1800's "tonic..elixer" sellers lol ) or further an agenda.
Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

I don't know why anyone is surprised at the disrespect and "conduct unbecoming" seen not only on the internet but throughout our society. Even students are printing out internet articles and calling it their own work. The President of the U.S. is also guilty of same.

We are now reaping the results the "me generation" as adults.

Well, every "survivalist" vendor was a "Johnny Come Lately" at one time... Most seem like they are trying to market good products at fair prices... But as in all things, "money begets money," and often the people who squirm and manipulate out "financing" for their business are the worst of the bunch... The "real McCoy's" are often the ones with little money and no financing...

Sounds like my story for the first 3-5 years!!!!

                Boyd- no problem whatsoever.

Just to clarify, it isn't that anyone is looking for a monopoly here, that's definitely not the case.

However I have to be careful also on the recommendations made here. We run that ad for Ammo Connection cause I personally know those folks, have had more than a few dealings with them that have all been excellent, they are good stewards and financially responsible. Also, they never even asked me to do it. I just try to support those folks that support us. Protus knows Thereisnospoon and I told him he could post some "group buys" on his tarps, gear, etc. if he so desired.

But if I started putting up every Joe Blow company out there and someone got burned (it happens), more than likely it would be remembered that they got burned on this site.

The point wasn't that we didn't want to see links to other companies. Heck I can buy most things at wholesale but I do from time to time buy stuff from some of the REPUTABLE preparedness companies out there like: Major, Emergency Essentials, Wendy Mae's Simpler living, Ammo Connection, etc.

The point was that posting a "you can get this via a dealer site (that wouldn't be helpful to most of us in the first place) for $10. less" is a rude, jerk'ish act. As in the OP, sometimes loyalty, showing some respect and supporting where you eat (versus crapping where you eat) is more important than saving $5. At least it is for me.

At least the guy that was stealing my writing half heartedly acknowledged it. No apology (quite the contrary) but he "kinda" acknowledged it-

People quite casually say things these days, both on the net and in person, that years ago would have gotten them punched in the mouth, at the very least. Used to be that folks were held to a certain level of personal accountability, and expected to maintain a given level of respect, honor, and manners. Sadly, those days are long gone I fear, and society seems content with that. :(
