Don't think Custer had the numbers advantage.

Napoleon had to fight the Russian winter as well as numerical superiority on his retreat after winning the Battle of Moscow. Even the Battle of Waterloo was not to his numerical advantage.

we had alot of help from the French particularly their navy and our rifles were superior to the smooth bore brown bess.

technology wise there was little difference between the british, us, the french, the germans etc in those days.

this is the modern era. thermal imagers, night vision, GPS, command and control and data links have revolutionized warfare. the marines last year set a record for 1 shot on target fire mission. an m777 gun fired a single gps guided shell that hit 13 feet from the lased target. the distance was 23 km.

during the invasion of iraq a single b2 bomber drops 2, yes two bombs, and destroyed an iraqi armor unit that was unloading their gear in a rail yard.

my point is a country that operates on 1960s russian tech, which is equivalent to 1950s western tech, is not going to invade and beat a country that operates 21st century tech.

ever seen a mig 17 and a generation 4 fighter do aerobatics? i did last year. watched mig 17s put on an air show and a us navy f-18e super bug from fleet do the same. its not even close. its not even the same sport let alone league. its like a sopwith camel vs a p-51d. and thats just climb dive and turning. that doesn't include air battle management, avionics, training etc.

oh I have no doubt it wouldn't be pretty. Yes technology is on our side for certain. But again, the little guy with nothing to lose and who cannot retreat back.

I could foresee a repeat of 91 where we have massed surrenders as well. Just depends on a lot of conditions.

War talk has them outside the normal box, normally they bullly bluster, get some rice. They SEEM less concerned about the rice right now. The armistice has been declared void, and they are making military manouvers in parallel to our own. They've launched missles in "traininig" http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage...-of-Japan.html . We seem to be responding by upping our ICBM protection in AK and CA, although I think that's just more pork budget show and whining about sequester than anything else.

now that was bad. his plane was one of the last to drop their bombs.
the heat coming up from below buffetted the plane. the smell
was horrible. burning shanty buildings, waste burning. people burning.
their assigned area to bomb was in a (just say as i forgot what direction they came in from.) northwest corner. so all the results of the prior burning was
affecting them and their plane.

So..... If you were going to use a weapon to intimidate someone, wouldn't you use your best or close to it, weapon?

First, look at the range of the missles (could be nuclear if desired) of over 1800 miles. It's a real threat. Second, it has to be a plane that the North Koreans can verify is there for the threat to be real. Third, if the U.S. really thought the North Koreans were going to attack the B-52's, they'd probably send a 'stealthy' escort for them and NOT advertise it. The B-52 may be an ancient plane but it's still a real threat to the North Koreans and remember, this is a 'show of force', not a planned attack.
If we sent the best or close to it, it could be seen as more of a provocation than a show of force and also tip our hand a little. If North Korea REALLY intends to do something we could want them to inderestimate us like Saddam did in Iraq.

With all that said, do we really think Obama is that smart? Probably not :-)
