Sent by a customer of ours that reads the forums here but isn't a member- I have changed a few things and CAPITALIZED THEM to help him keep his opsec.
So 12 years ago or so I was downrange and got to see a live feed from a drone on a firefight in a country FAR FAR AWAY. Anyway, won't disclose where or other details, but saw it with my own eyes. Can't speak to the outcome, but watched it like a live video game.

At the time, the thermal cameras had good enough resolution from 5,000 feet (might have been more, wasn't paying attention to that fact, but that's the minimum they tend to fly at) to distinguish what kind of weapons were being used by the muzzle blast. I.E. M4 versus AK versus PKM. Humans were blobs, but you could see the legs and arms clearly. OPSEC DELETED Standard electro-optical was out since it was nighttime and all you could see were flashes and explosions, but could clearly see them. And using a laser to designate targets for a gun run by an AC-130.

All this from a live satellite feed in an air conditioned trailer a couple of countries over. With the claim they could do it from the States if they wanted (and did from time to time since the base of operations was their back up). And a decade ago so you bet the technology is probably far better now.
    Thanks Tim appreciate the insight!

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

There was a show about drones on NOVA last week they show one here. http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/28/d...6pLid%3D263031

The bad thing for me is there is an old airfield 30 mi. from my bol. that the state is trying to win a government contract that would make it a test facilty for drones.

2 articles passed along by the weekly e-mail from Blackwater (always worth a read)

Bill sponsor Sen. Joe Negron and police couldn't agree on the use of drones as extra eyes in the sky at large-crowd events, such as a football game, with Negron saying monitoring crowds goes too far – and that he'd vote against his own bill (SB 92) if it were changed to allow that.

What to do with drones. I guess you ask what the main strengths are.

The 2 main strengths are its thermal and it flies above to where it can not be seen. It seems like a surgical instrument more than a mass destruction instrument, unless they decide to use it as the later.

Thermal is a hard nut to crack how you defeat it. Off the top of my head hard to do. I guess the only two ways is to hide from it or hide from it. What I mean is in the country and not allot of thermal images then you must hide your thermal. The other is to mingle into a populated area where there is lots of thermal images in other people and lots of buildings to hide in and hard to follow you.

Hiding the thermal image I believe can be accomplished in mylar where it reflects your heat or keeps your heat in. I imagine in homes and underground bunkers are even better, with bunkers being the best. Still hard to move at night though? I would imagine also going to water would help too. Especially if I have the tin foil hat on to help reflect the heat of your head. :p For those at retreats I guess tunnels to different outbuildings would help. I also think maybe deep ditches covered. Also maybe little buried hidey holes spread out to go to with mylar doors. It will be a cache for people.

During the day it will use a camera and unless letting you know it is up their then nothing we can do. Now if you do know then canopy and camo would be good things and hard for them to find you. I believe thermal harder to use in the day, or less effective.

Keeping on the down and low so they do not look for you in the first place would be the best option though. Best offense is a good defense.

So I see they are going to go after this Chris Dorner guy with a drone.

I know it will help tremendously but I dont know if I like that on our own soil, I just dont know.

Double edged sword aint it, cuts both ways it does.
Want to stop the dude from killing but don't want it playin peekaboo in the side window on a quiet night with the wifey and uploaded it for the world to see on .net.
No ROE is established except for the the 4th which is left to interpretation and it's not even on the agenda to do with the lawmakers except for states and they can't seem to wait to use them especially them so called free states in the highly touted redoubt area.
Ignoring this is bad juju and the people are behind the power curve. So Dorner this week and someone we think might be, maybe, well kinda, next week.

My whole thing is what if they send in ole "droney" and mess up like they did when they shot up those 2 ladies.

Stuff like that just gives that PD an even worse rap than they had before. And they had the nerve to have a new truck "donated"

I just hope the drone excuse is not the opening of pandoras box.

Former Marine, friend of mine, was stationed in Pendleton, got out is on LAPD. Said 4th amendment is out the door like crazy there. Over 400 doors busted in because of rumor that Dorner might be there. No warrant, just declare and door breach. Sets a REALLY bad precedent.

Some more good stuff on hiding from thermal. This has got me thinking hard on this problem. I believe with correct preparation can be ways to defeat it. If not defeating it at least give us some help on not make it easy for anyone who uses it.
