FL and/or GA campout? Well hell we've never done that before ;) LOL

Yes I know, we missed the normal time frame (Jan-march) for the GA campout this year.

Why? Couple reasons. Most importantly I had some very ill extended family members we were nursing back to health. Not exactly hangnails or colds either :)

Also, to be honest, attendance dropped in GA the last two years cause it always seemed to hit at the COLDEST part of the year. Yes, can you believe it, hard core survivalists were put off by the idea of camping when it got into the 20's at night. Well, I should say some hard core survivalists were. :) Many of those that were "regulars" also had some medical issues come up during that time frame- half of the OMBC was out with injuries during that time frame. The decision was made to let it go till the fall.

We always try to space out the FL and the GA gatherings because a lot of the same crowd attend both, despite the drive, etc. Having two back to back creates a scheduling issue for most people.

If folks really realized how much FREE training and instruction you could get at one of these gatherings, their would be 100 people at each instead of 30. The "everything should be free" "why does preparing cost money" "what can I do on the cheap" crowd STEP OVER A DOLLAR TO PICK UP A DIME with this sort of thing. They female dog about the cost of gas to drive to one of these events not realizing they could get a couple hundred bucks worth of free training. Zip drives of data and vague ideas about how to do certain things because you only ever watched a youtube video about it is definitely NOT the same thing. Yet the whining crowd will post asking where they can "learn for low cost" but in reality, they want someone to come to them, take them by the hand, teach them for days on end, of course all for free. And will you do it with a flippin smile and sugar on top also please?

Too much socialist attitudes in this movement any more.

Not directed at you Wise, just people in general and cheapskates in particular ;) I was driving 7 hours to stupid sit around campouts in NC in 2004 on my own dime to give free classes that I was never even thanked for. Can I tell you how poor I was in 2004? I guarantee you a lot more than those that cry baby about $30. in gas to get hundreds of dollars of free training.

You can only make it so easy. If it's too easy or completely free, NO ONE VALUES IT.

Some new "community" revelations I have recently had (although I should have known this before)...

Within the "like-minded faith" groups I hang out with, many of them very preparedness and homestead motivated, the topic of communities and local groups comes up often. I view this as a good thing, but recently the raw reality of what that means hit a bit closer to home, showing me that I still have unrealistic expectations, so another of my bubbles has been popped...

How will a community landowner deal with other community landowners that do not maintain or keep their property up as well as they would like (aka having their property strewn about with junk, stuff, equipment and debris)?

This was driven home to me recently by my relationship with a family that we love as brothers and sisters in faith, who are living it, running a family farm, homeschooling, the whole bit, yet how they keep their property, tools, equipment, and stuff would make me RUN AWAY as fast as I could if asked to be their neighbor "in normal times." Seriously, they have piles of stuff everywhere across their farm... Lawnmowers here and there, yard equipment left in bushes, piles of scrap metal everywhere, piles of old lumber everywhere, weeds gone wild, maintenance of their home and barn in serious disarray... You get the point... Yet they are content with this lifestyle...

Maybe it's me... Maybe I am the one in fantasyland. But I cannot rest if my place was like that, nor would I want to live next to people that live like such, even if they are my best friends... I know some stuff here and there is normal farm life, but this is the extreme, I think...

So eventhough they speak about joining a community already in its building stage in TN, wanting us to look into joining this group as well by buying land there, if they are my neighbors, I am now having serious concerns... Even if they say they will keep their land up better "over there," I do not think people doing this for so long are going to change and that old ways will come back quickly...

So basically just sharing a sad baloon popping reality I just had...

Rmpl- I've had the same thing in reverse. A knucklehead that had freakazoid organizing syndrome, that literally about panicked when he saw things like that, but who wasn't leading his family. His wife hated him, and made that fact well known to others. His son didn't listen to him at all and regularly did UNSAFE and dangerous things at our property. His wife sat on her behind while others worked.

To make matters worse, they were freaking out about minutia then leaving thing majorly unclean. And yes their is a BIG difference between clutter and unclean. I'm sorry the stupid labels may all face the same way in your cabinets but when I take my shoes off and walk on your floor and it feels like BEACH SAND, your priorities are in the wrong spot. Or while your freaking out about organization of a closet no one uses, but track in chicken poop, not take your shoes off and then your kid plays on the rug, well your priorities are just in the wrong spot.

Often times also, us country types get out of the mindset of worrying about what the next door neighbors are going to think about a pile of lumber sitting in the back 40. Why are they back there? Why the hell do they care? If it's protected it's not going to waste.

I see it as akin to the guy freakin out because a couple guys he's trying to organize as a group don't have "the right gear" (kid you not, I've heard this). My answer "well do they have something to carry mags, ammo?" "Yes but it's not multicam and it's not a quality brand." My answer "well.... o.k. maybe they are more interested in being able to feed their family, etc. right now and will upgrade gear later as money permits." Irony was the person "freaking out" over the 'wrong gear' his buddy had, had little food put up and a LOT of mouths to feed....

In short, we all have different priorities. And we all literally have some holes in our plans or what may appear to be holes to others.

My grandpa was a welding genius. His place was always trashed. Piles of JUNK everywhere, but if you came to him with a custom welding job, he could always find just the right metal to do it.

Someday, the farmer with all that stuff laying around, might be the richest, most popular guy around.

Not wack-job wierd about organization or order, just mindful of how my property looks from my neighbors property and what my homestead tells people about me... It is all about respecting our fellow man and not unduly infringing upon the enjoyment of someone elses property by making my property an eye-sore. That is the essense of life, liberty and property, in my opinion.

To me, stuff, if it has any potential value, should be protected... That is what barns and sheds are for. Stuff left outside, uncovered, most often quickly turns to useless junk... Just as we go back to dirt, so to does other things...

In a community that is defendable and workable, I believe neighbors will be relatively close, within an acre or two of each other, with the "back 40" spreading out from there, which is also the defense perimeter. In SHTF/WROL, who cares about junk piles, as long as it doesn't give an adversary cover/concealment, but "normal times" when people live individually but participate in a community as well, I expect some kind of pride in one's property, belongings, tools, equipment, and the such...

No wonder my family is doing it alone so far... LOL!

I agree rumpl - Even though I am a pack rat I keep it indoors - An Agriculture Mechanics Professor told us that with all things stored, it is a "Pay me Now or Pay me Later" situation. Build cover or repair the rust! My place is pretty neat and tidy,,, the barns are packed, racked and stacked though!!
