    i enjoyed rawles book .
    it really helped me.
yes i found it awkward reading in some places.
but even though there was some awkward sentences etc..
it 'prolly' has helped many others besides me.
i've gone back and read some of my own posts and found many misspelled words.

i have bought many and loaned out many..

to those who don't like it..
    my comment is simple..

go out and write your own book,
    publish it yourself
and see if you can sell it.
if i like it as much as i liked rawles i'll buy a bunch if i can get a volume discount!
rawles gave me a volume discount.

post it on the net first so we can all critique it and enjoy it for free.

I believe he has released it on audio. Not for certain though.

I'm curious as to what you thought of One Second After?

The Patriots haters really like OSA but I thought it was poorly written along with terribly depressing. I guess the good thing is that by being depressing it should make someone prep more.

Its all a matter of individual taste in writing style anyway.

          i liked osa
i met the author and heard him speak.
seems mighty sincere and as far as i can tell has researched the subject real well
the hunger issue was made clear.
not as much substance as patriots, but i liked it.

What did you guys think of Alas Babylon?

I think it was pretty good for being written so long ago.
You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

OSA is a modern version of it. IMHO.

It is a much better "shtf" book to have people read than say patriots if they are total newbies.
patriots imho is a book you give someone who is already going down that road to give them an idea of what and where to go.

To be honest what was lacking in the book, I actually found quite refreshing.

Sure nearly faultless wooden characters can be a little irritating, but not nearly as much as the implausibility

                  Triple-sod - Can I get an amen?

I can't stand the "oh hey, the stuff is hitting the fan let's all run around and get everything squared away at the last minute" NON SENSE that prevails in fiction.

I think it's giving people a LOT of false ideas. You see this in all the "what should I get when I run out at the last minute" type threads you see everywhere. Believe it or not, back in the day, I knew a LOT of guys that would drop a couple hundred bucks on ammo/guns but didn't mess with food cause they would "knock over a Jiffy (convenience store) on the way out of town."
Where do you suppose they got that idea? I suppose they thought Mr. Morris would be right there helping them load and telling them to head to the mountains?

I think people don't realize the brain processes and the underlying MESSAGES they are receiving whether they realize it or not. The brain RELATES things to past events, to things we have read, seen, etc.

We don't even know our brains do this, but they do. They "relate" to situations, circumstances regularly.

In that way, fiction can have some good, in that it (SHOULD) make us think THROUGH a situation. However it can also provide unrealistic ideas of people that squeaked by the skin of their teeth with no preps ahead of time. Think THAT doesn't give them a message also? Maybe that's why a large portion of those that ONLY hang around survival forums for the fiction never seem to accomplish anything outside of having "lists" of crap they never seem to put up, skills they never seem to master, etc.
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

OK so their was stuff I didn't agree with, stuff that I went "wth?" over, etc. But the criticism in the thread above is crazy.

What do you think? Is it THAT bad?
I read alot of stuff. well listen to it on audio book anyway. I go to the movies too so you know I'm kinda harsh. I didn't think Patriots was awesome however I didn't think it was aweful either. too many people living a boolean black and white world. if they didn't like it then they hated it. if they loved it it was the greatest of all time etc. people don't have any inbtween feelings anymore.

yeah I would like to see the family in a sense compared to mine, well not 100% because I am in this to the end. Well lets say one of my buddies since his kids are a little older and he doesnt listen

About $200 in the bank, 2-3 weeks food and maybe a shotgun or a .380., some family camping gear (you know the weighty stuff)

I want to see THAT FAMILY in a book try and make it.

I actually thought about starting a thread about Survival PAW and Survival Non Fiction and how it applies to you and your preparations. Stay tuned on that.

Spock, I wish I could have read cool books like that in HS. The only one that I ever read was Animal Farm. I think I was the only 16 year old that "got it"

That was kind of the principle in "Lights Out." Non-prepper family but a lot of manna from heaven dropped in and they had the wise sense to use it. I'm not sure about the published version, but the online version had that in it.

If their boss wouldn't have gave them the silver and the 10grand. And them already having the safes full of rifles and the supplies from work, I would agree 100%. The folks in L/O had one serious blessing but it made the story better.
But, of all the books Lights out and One Second After hit closer to home for me personally and what I have in stock. Skills, common sense and a level head is what got those characters by.

I really enjoyed Lights Out but it is a long, long read. I bought it in paperback from Amazon and it is available in Kindle. Haven't seen it on CD. With it being so long, when you loan it out and it takes a while to get it back.

yeah but now its the " shtf" event hits lets run last minute to do xyz.

IMHO. A good story would be of the basic "suburban" family making it through an event.Even if the event was a simple a 2-3 month crash or infrastructure melt down. A true short term event and not a long term put everyone back to 1868 event like most shtf stories.

i wish i could just voice record stories i hate typing.. my attention span drops after 2-3 pages of typing LMAO
