If you aren't in a position to shoot them (for whatever reason) a double shot of pepper spray is pretty effective. First one in the face - save the second shot for when they turn tail and run.... it just keeps 'em runnin'.

Had a very similar situation about 7 years ago . Instead of calling 911 though I threw the damn dog into my neighbors house when he opened the door. It too was a pit , and went after my then wife at 530 in morning while she was taking out the trash. It's a shame that some animals have to suffer a short life do to ignorant owners.
Carry as little as possible , to obtain as much as needed.

My how times have changed. In 1894 the .44 cal velo dog revolver was introduced to allow bicyclist the ability to defend against dogs chasing them.

It is sad isn't it...our first gut reaction is getting a lawyer because we're probably looking at a lawsuit.

Some people don't need to have pits. A lot of pits, and pit mixes, are bread wrong from the start, and doomed, regardless of who owns them. Then there are a ton of others, who have morons for owners, who don't even need to be raising house plants, much less dogs. I grew up around pits, and labradors. The pits I've had, and my friends have had, have all been as loyal, loving, friendly, and mild mannered as any of the labs. But people breed screwed up dogs, who should get the youth in asia. Then other people simply aren't responsible, knowledgeable, or intelligent enough, to be able to properly train and raise a dog with such high energy and physical ability, combined with being one of the most loyal of breeds. That is a real bad combination in the hands of the wrong owner. The pits I and my friends have had, can, and have been, taken around all types of other dogs and groups of people, and all they want is to make friends and play. But like I say, there are too many people that are idiots, and have no business with this breed, or really any other for that matter. It's like handling firearms. Some people have no business with them. If they only own a pellet gun, they may not end up causing much damage. But with a high powered rifle, they can really be a walking disaster, and make a bad name for high powered rifle owners.

It's a good thing your neighbor seems to realize the bigger picture. Even if his daughter has an issue, at least you still have a good relationship with your neighbor after this. And thank God your wife made it to safety, and you didn't have any kids out there. No excuse for aggressive, dangerous dogs. Sounds like you did the right thing. I'm glad to hear your wife and you didn't get hurt. Besides the physical injuries, if that dog did have rabies, that would have been that much worse. This could, and probably will become, a pretty serious threat in a long term SHTF scenario. One more thing to be prepared for I suppose. I would be leery of any dogs in a SHTF event. You never know what might happen.

Wow, what a post. I'd like to point out that "aggression" is not exclusive to African Americans.

I read that to mean the dog's aggression.

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

The dogs are aggressive, the neighbors are passive. But if they got aggressive I can get the opposite of passive.

But, since the cold has came on I havent seen Fido lately or his buddies. Maybe the dog catcher got em or maybe a car hit em......who knows?

                      Update

Got a call this morning from the Animal Control officer who came out to handle the case. He said that the dog did not have rabies, but had some type of steroid hormone in his system. So the idiot owner had been giving her dog steroids and one of the reasons he was so aggresive was because he was having steroid rage like in humans. I asked if he sent the daughter a fine and he said he sent her a $500 fine to her address out of state. If she doesn't pay within 30 days he will have a judge issue a bench warrent for her arrest and the next time she comes into the state she's going to jail. So in this case "stupid does hurt" and who in their right mind would give a dog steroids, how ignorant.

Sounds to me like "they" were pumping up the dog for fighting (in a ring)!

I am sure that if the animal control and bite victim was notified of this, it would help the bite victims case. ;)

That helps prove my earlier point in this thread. People that give their dogs steroids or anything else to try to pump them up are idiots and shouldn't have any pets at all. It's scumbags like that who give pits a bad name. Unless of course, as Spock mentioned, she just happened to have some ailment and was on meds from the vet. Something tells me that probably isn't likely in this case.

With any luck she'll learn a lesson. Treat your dog that way and end up with it dead, and you fined for $500. "Gee, maybe I should raise my dog to be nice."
