  • Killed the neighbors dog today.

Animal control officer just left and I was within my rights. I have called the neighbors to let them know what happened and they are fine with it.
Neighbors daughter who is in her mid 40's had come visiting for the holidays and brought her pit bull/german shephard mix. Neighbors hate daughters dog because the dog is mean and in the past bit neighbors dog. Well today wife was in our fenced back yard and the dog broke loose from the chain the dog was tied with and came after my wife, jumped the 5ft fence and wife had run into the shed outside. I heard the dog barking and my wife hollering and I went outside with my 12ga pump. Dog was trying to get into the shed to attack my wife and when I went out the back door, the dog came at me. I shot the dog in the face with a load of #4 buck that I keep loaded in the shotty. The dog went down but tried to get up and I give it another load to the chest and that was the end of the damn thing. Amazing what a load of #4 buck will do to flesh at 15 yards. I called 911 and told them what happened and they send the animal contol officer to the house. He took one look, and info from me and the wife, went up to the neighbors house and took pictures of where the dog had broken loose from the chain. He wrote the report and told me it was a justified shooting and gave me a copy of his report. He did tell me to take my camera and go up to the neighbors (by the way, none of them was home at the time) and take my own pictures of the dog's broken chain just in case. He did take the dogs carcass with him to have it tested for rabies. I called the neighbors on their cell phone and told them that I had to shoot the dog and why. So I will see what their daughter says when they get home. Neighbor said that daughter was having a fit I shot her dog. I told neighbor to tell her not to push it or she will get a ticket from animal contol and a lawsuit from me. Animal contol officer was mad at her for not restraing the dog with stronger chain, she used a cheap chain that was also rusted in a couple of places and he told me if she caused any problems let him know and he will cite her with a $500 ticket.

Good for you, you should not be held hostage on your own land, and the neighbor should have restrained the dog better.

I'm glad everything worked out for the best and your family and you are safe.

But me being the typical "worst case scenario" person I tend to be...

I'd suggest at least talking to a lawyer and getting them on retainer in case the neighbor's daughter gets stupid. People are idiots sometimes when it comes to animals (just like people in that regard "Muh baby didn't do nuffin! Hez a gonna be a doctor!") and even though there is the threat of a ticket/lawsuit from your side, they can and will try to collect from you for "emotional" injuries or whatever compensation. People are just stupid. Maybe it's just my lack of trust in people when it comes to things like that, but sometimes an ounce of prevention is better than the pound of cure.

And I personally like the smaller buck (kind of have to with a 20 gauge). I alternate #3 buck and slug loads in my shotgun. If the first shot doesn't get 'em, the slug will slow them down.

            Ditto to what Grand said.

By the way... I hope you and your wife (any kids home at the time?) were not "emotionally injured" or traumatized by this horrific event. I'm sure your neighbor's daughter wouldn't want to foot the bill for the therapy and/or counseling y'all might need after being attacked by her vicious dog in the safety of your own (presumably) fenced yard. Hint, hint.

              Update:
Neighbor came home and came down to the house, they live behind me. I showed him were I shot the dog and the copy of the report the control officer made. I told him again what the officer said about a ticket and my wife told him that I had no choice but to shoot. Neighbor is a good guy and so is his wife and they understand what happened and why I had to shoot the dog. I asked him if there was going to be a problem with the daughter and he said " absolutely not". I also showed him the pictures of the chain and how in bad shape it was and he then said "as far as I am concerened it was a good shoot, end of story, and I am glad you shot the damn dog". Come to find out that the daughter ( who is living in Arizona ) has not kept the dogs shots up to date. The last rabies shot the dog had was 6/7 years ago. The daughter is leaving tomorrow morning to go back home and is going to let the city take care of the dead dog. I think she wants to leave before the animal control officer comes back to see her LOL. I told neighbor that if his daughter wants to cause trouble that I will respond and get a lawyer and nail her *** to the wall. He laughed and said " I don't blame you and she is out of line about the dog, plus she has another lawsuit against her in AZ over the dog biting a jogger back in the summer". Neighbor knows his daughter is an idiot and does not cover for her. He said that she is an adult and has to take responsibility for her actions no matter how stupid they are. After he left I called the animal control officer and told him what the neighbor had said about the rabies shots and the lawsuit. He said that he is going to call Arizona and verify everything and that is more ammunition for him to ticket the daughter and if she leaves, he will send the ticket through the police dept here to the police dept where she lives in Arizona.

I feel your pain sir. I have some dogs here on my street that roam around and bark ALL DAMN MORNING!

They have cornered my neighbors pig under my porch one morning and woke up my newborn that needed to go to sleep. I chased them off with a stick.

I threw rocks at them one morning and nailed the crap out of one in the face. It came to where I came home one night from work and they had a half eaten possum in my yard. I lost it and drawed on them ready to pump .40HP in all of em but I thought "it will be more of a hassle if I shoot these damn mutts so I should call Animal control." Ever since that night, they havent came near my yard. I have Animal Controls number on a post it note in my truck and on the fridge. If we see em again, its over and I will await confrontation with the owners.....which are african american.

Hornady TAP 60 grain out of an AR works pretty good as a deterrent on pits. As would the 110 grain TAP out of an M1A. Cheaper alternatives might be some Tula ammo testing out of your selected firearm. But I wouldn't suggest a pistol unless you have no other option. Do be humane and hit them with the hardest round that puts an immediate stop to the activity which caused you to shoot in the first place. And no, I don't care for pit bulls, pit bull mixes or any dog bred for aggression and not controlled.

Just a couple of ideas to throw out there...

Its funny because the day after Christmas the dogs destroyed their owners trash....I mean EVERYWHERE.....when I saw buddy out there picking it up (out of my yard too) I couldn't help but laugh.....

I am with you on that Grand.....I hate em too. Sorry if that offends any of you pit, pit mix or american stradfirekystralburgersstacobell cur mix owners.

I shoot several "dump" dogs and cats a year here at my place. City people drive out to the country and "dump" their unwanted pets. They don't want to keep them, don't want to take them to the pound (know they'll be killed,) so dump them out here. They're bad to "pack up" and start running together causing trouble. I've never lost any livestock to them but one of my neighbors has. One old woman in this area got attacked by a pack of dump dogs while she was walking out to check her mailbox. She got bit several times before she could get away from them and get back in the house. Deputy went out and shot 2 of them, but the rest got away. I don't have any compunction at all about shooting the damn things. I've shot them with pistols, rifles and shotguns, whatever I have with me when I see a dog or cat that I know doesn't belong here. My neighbors do the same thing.

The really sad part of all this is that the first thought is to 'lawyer up' and who's gonna sue who first. Where the F did we go this wrong? Nothin' personal on that thought, just a comment on where we, as a society, have gone.
