I keep my Amateur commo and good scanners in 20mm ammo cans with flat copper braid gaskets and other GMRS and portables in a large steel cookie tin in an underground shelter. I have "sacrificial" sets that are hooked up for daily use. I always keep spare coax, extra antennas, power supplies and adapters in a safe place too. Don't forget copies of your user manuals (most are downloadable) and frequency/repeater access codes/ and local and regional LEO/Fire/EMS/Emergency Mgt. freqs too.

The major thing about any faraday cage is that none of the electronics is touching the sides or else it will conduct the energy as well, and be fried.
There are some great You Tube videos on Faraday cages and their prospective designs. Personally, this is one of the worst things I fear for this great nation."Fate rarely calls upon us at a moment of our choosing"- Optimus Prime

LMAO!! Think about it- he's always talking about and obsessing about cigarettes in the first half of the book. I read the book years ago and then we listened to the audiobook form of it on a car trip. Maybe it's more evident hearing it on the audio book.Originally posted by All Talk View PostGot give my props to "One cigarrette after" in the first couple of posts. Hilarious. That was indeed a distracting (and absurd) recurring motif.
Addictions are an underlying theme in a LOT of fiction stories- think about "Alas Bourbonlon" ;) First half of that book he mentions Bourbon left and right.
Maybe it's just that I've read/heard these so much these things stick out to me.
Their are some lessons there. For me it will likely be caffeine. I started drinking more caffeine when I started cutting weight. I've stopped cold turkey before and by Day 2 or 3 you have a headache worse than any hangover you've ever had. You drink a boatload of water that day and take a bunch of aspirins and it passes. Still, something to wean off of though...Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"
Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"
Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

Of course, a lot of bad writing contains things like that. Usually, you don't notice them -- things like all characters constantly "grinning" as they say something or the like. But in a PA story it's really funny because as a reader, you are drawn into the physical "biology" of the characters (where's the next meal coming from, primarily). That makes the cigs so damn funny. People are starving and he regrets he has no more smokes.
I hadn't noticed the bourbon thing in "Alas", but at least that has the excuse of having been wriitng in what, 1960?
I am getting as much bourbon drinking in as I can now, just in case.

I heard an interview with an engineer today, Matt Stein. He has written 2 books on the subject of EMP or solar storms killing technology. His books are well researched. I don't agree with some of the things he said in the interview, such as global warming, etc, but he does know his poop about technology and the absence of. The books are When Technology Fails and When Disaster Strikes.

There was a report written last year from a contractor with Oak Ridge National Laboratory discussing an E1 HEMP. I have not read all of it (just found it ) but apparently there are at least 3 different wavelengths from a HEMP that we are to be concerned with. The report is concerned with the effects on the power grid. From what I read so far, it doesn't sound good.Welcome to Tennessee, patriot state of shootin' stuff.

Here is a good treatise on the components of EMP actions. E1, E2 and E3 http://www.futurescience.com/emp/E1-E2-E3.html
