  • EMP Are You Ready?

I think this guy represents most of the average Joes out there

How accurate do you guys think he is?

He makes a bunch of sense during parts of it but more importantly I think it is the pule of some of our neighbors that may not be as committed as we are

He got to the core of things with his people. the biggest problem with EMP is going to be with our electric grid. Some cars will still run but not for long without gasoline. he is right on the money about getting home and how problematic that will be. I travel a lot and it would be almost impossible to get home if the flag goes up while I am way out there. I like the guy since he is very level headed. I wish more pastors would get the message and pass it on. GB

I'm a truck driver and if one goes off I'm screwed. I travel 3/4 of Florida every day. There was a article I read some where that if one goes off cars made before 1976 or 79 would still run cause they were made without electronics in them.

I'm glad to see this from others. That bag is kinda light though IMO.
Thedreamers, hogwash, the guy in the plane is screwed, you gotta get yourself more upbeat and prepped now before anything happens. Get tough and get positive. I've been in some tough spots far away from home. I aint goin down till I'm ready and I will believe that till God looks me in the eye says settle down boy and tells me different.
You are training, right? You are learning, right? You are prepped and carry a stocked bag, right? You are getting in shape, right? You carry maps, right? You might even reconize someone cut from the same cloth who sees you are the real deal and get some unsolicited help, right? You are as ready as possible, right?
Then you WILL prevail! Have faith in God, yourself and your skills! Hooah and all that jazz.

Matt your right the guy in the plane is going to be worse off than I'll ever be. LOL thanks for pointing that out, it brought a smile to my face. Yes I'm working on being ready, but I can only carry a small bag with me on the road and no fire arms DOT rules. Plus I carry hazzmat stuff and so they check often. And yes God willing those who believe and prep will make it.

I wish we knew more about EMP. There is no consensus on what electronics will be fried if they are powered on vs. if they are turned off. Maybe it's just trivial, therefore; I am preparing for the worst possible outcome. The getting home "at all costs" may be the biggest hurdle to jump. Wife works out of town in one city, children in school in a different county, and I am out of town in a different city than the others. Now, try to get everybody home on foot, with no transportation?

I was glad to hear Newt point out EMP's during the debate last night. They asked him what is the biggest threat to America. He did write a foreword for One Second After so is very familiar with the subject.

I honestly think no one is 100% ready because it is the unknown. Like being dropped in the deepest of the sea or deepest of space. It is something that we have never encountered. We have tested for it and know some about it, but its not a topic we as a country and world, know much about like ridgerunner said.
I know that EMP goes off tomorrow hypothetically speaking (a.) I will be at my moms and we are shooting tomorrow so we will be "heavy loaded" on our toys (and food) and (b.) I have a 5 month old that without formula (wife cant BF) we are going to be in a world of poop. As time goes on we will be stocking more of his formula but thats as money comes in. That and gas are really the only things that we cant stock because of funds.

After reading One Second After, it really put things in perspective for me. Luckily my "troop" is in good health and we are progressing very well with prepping. Now if I can just get my troop combined with a group, then I will feel better about the possibilities for the "Sun Drop Bomb" as my buddy calls it.

The one thing that is very important and prevalent with talking about an EMP is "what are your neighbors going to do?" Will people think its the end of the world and freak out and drink koolaid or will they go into utter chaos mode and turn into barbarians. I truly hope that as Americans and Humans, people keep a little bit of civility. But that is doubtful, i.e Katrina or LA Riots.

I am just always Aware. Even though I do look at the bright side of life and the rest of my life for that matter, like this man says "you gotta have a contingency plan"

Good video, very basic and he lays it out there for the average person to start to "get" it.

Was out last night some place and heard part of the thing Gingrich talked about in that debate. He gets elected maybe "One Cigarette After" will be required reading in schools!

EMP would hurt our lifestyle without a doubt.

All of our vehicles would be gone. Bikes would rule the day. Their are some diesels around, but aren't exactly "go to town" type vehicles. Fuel isn't a problem.

----Possible solutions---- alternates- horses, donkeys, our "cadillacs" (feet), bikes. May eventually go the route of a couple of small dirtbikes, have a place to store them that's protected. Eventually may investigate a diesel CUCV. All of my family is used to running, "yogging" (I think it's a soft 'j'- Evidently you just run slowly for an extended period of time" Movie reference LOL) and walking distance. Need to learn and practice attaching loads to bicycles.... Ho Chi Minh trail style.

Most of our energy system would be kaput- we can live without power, have before. But having at least some power allows us to do so much more.

-----Possible solutions: a diesel genset is at the "heart" of our system. It was designed that way cause back in the day solar panels were a lot more expensive than they are now. I paid $625. each in 98 and 99 for the same panels that are $375. now. We'll be able to pump water with the genset provided the protections on the well work, if not we have spares. If not water will be via a deep well hand pump with further backups is necessary. We also put away a 12volt inverter and charge controller in a large metal medical box in a further protected dealie. So maybe we will be able to have some use out of our AE batteries. If not, or if they go bad, we ought to be able to scrounge car batteries for a while.

Semi critical items are already protected- some seismic sets are in large ammo cans, NODs never are out of cans unless in use and usually one at a time.

We have a long way to go, most especially in the transportation end of things. We will have less of a "need" for travel, but their will still be firewood cutting and misc. other tasks where it would be nice to have some sort of vehicle. These will have to be done via wheelbarrow or heavy equipment I guess. Got a lot of boots and extra shoes LOL, that will probably get the most use in the "transportation" category!!!

Have a series I already recorded for the Podcast on bugging out that I'll post soon.

May sound strange, but a good diesel tractor will carry a lot of wood, plow the ground, and would do for transport in a pinch.
I have an 07 Kubota that does not have electronics except for possibly the voltage regulator in the alternator?

There are also PTO generators available.

Buy a back up of the voltage regulator, place it in "Faraday bag" and Bury it/place it in your basement. Maybe just maybe you will be able to swap it out if EMP hit.

I have been told the PERFECT faraday cage is to go to the junk yard and get yourself an old microwave oven. The internal faraday cage that prevents electro static from getting out prevents emp from getting in. Don't quote me on that, as I have no clue if it is true, just something I heard on another survival site somewhere.

An EMP isnt much different from a regular signal IMO. I'm no scientist though. In order to test this I put my cell phone in the microwave just now and called it. Guess what, it wont get signal in there. Hmmmmm There may be some truth to this!
