It has to do with the honeycomb screen in the door and the walls. It blocks certain wavelengths, hopefully radiation from the microwave leaking out. Of course, it blocks either way.
Welcome to Tennessee, patriot state of shootin' stuff.

      td,
Not being a but head so please dont read into it as being so, just looking for knowledge... Can you show me the DOT regulation that shows "no firearms" other then company policy, and common sense like hauling flamables or stuff that tends to go boom. Like I said not being a butt just would like to know the regulation, thanks.
Remember the primary weapon everyone has is the one behind his eyes and between his ears. Some small stashes on your rout either at storage companies like u-store it. or buckets burried along your route somewhere. Dont put anything in those buckets your not willing to loose, to theft or water damage etc..

Forgot to add, Im screwed with my fly by wire 09 JK unlimited wrangler. There is a place in Downtown Orlando on OBT that carries old military vehicles all the time, been meaning to stop in and see how much they want for the CUCVs that they have there, and I'm very curious on the 5 ton in their yard as well.

I also tried this and my phone didn't ring. Sounds like a good tip of the day

Newt Gingrich is discussing EMP on the CNN debate. I find it amazing that a former Washington insider is worried about EMP and no one is talking about it.

            http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/bes...emp-attack.cnn

Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP): Gingrich said an EMP was the biggest threat to the country that no one was talking about. Doing a little reading on it, we can confirm it’s scary stuff. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...dqmN_blog.html
Newt is a believer as evidenced by the forward he wrote for "One Second After". The news media seems not to want to educate the American public. Or, perhaps, the American people simply don't want to know.

The rule can be found in the Federal Motor Carriers Hand Book, it's the bible that has all the rules for truckers. Every driver has one when driving a big rig. That too is a rule.

And in refferance to the microwave oven, is there a way to put something like that over my generator to keep it safe that way we can still have some power if an EMP hit?

I would encase a gen set with some copper screening and ground the screen in atleast two locations. I heard aluminum screening works (and is much cheaper) but when it comes to your gen set, well I will be making one out of copper mesh/screen.

I'm packing up a "get back home bag" with emergency survival gear in case anything happens while I'm at work. As a teacher, I'll be required to stay until all the students are picked up by parents or I'm released. (I'm talking to the admin about water, emergency blankets, and kid friendly food for the wait.) Since I'll be walking six miles home with a young grandson, I'm packing everything up in a rolling type backpack. I've also informed all the adults in my household which routes (primary and secondary) we'll be taking. We will have to start out in the morning, but with a little luck and staying off the main roads, we should make it home in three or four hours. Everyone should think through the possibilities of an emp attack and how you would get home. Families should know where everyone is everyday; and they should have a plan to pick up their children from school. Remember, most buses won't be running!

You just brought up a good point, and at the same time scary for me. With my wife graduating in the spring and teaching elementary school next fall this hits home for me. Would you really stay and wait with every kid until their parents arrive? That could be a looooong time. Or would you think of yourself and high tail it home? This is a conversation me and the wife have not had. Wow, this is interesting. Personally, and call me selfish or wrong, but I would tell my wife to book it home "if something of this magnitude happened". I am sorry but I already have 2 kids and couldn't take on any more. There would be a lot more to worry about than a ton of possible orphans. I am sorry if that offends anyone. But knowing my wife, she would figure out something. I will keep her a "non lethal" kit in her classroom...water, food and whatever else I can get in there without having DHS coming after me.
Great point Georgia, you just got the hamster wheel a turnin.

Wife just informed me she would stay, if it started to become more than a couple of days, she would re-evaluate. This is why I love her. She knows if it was more than 3 days, I would come get her.....

WOW WiseOwl; a couple of days? I would be thinking at the couple day mark I have some orphans to take care of, whether abandoned or parents dead, either way more mouths to feed for sure. With EMP attack, my wife can make it to my daughter's school via bicycle (with kiddy sit attached) in around 4 hours, but that is only if the initial attack didn't start immediate anarchy. In which case she would stay put and I would go from work via foot to her school, which WOULD take a full day to get there. I have been thinking about renting one of those self storage spaces near her school. Put in stay alive stuff, a case or two of canned emergency water, one of our propane stoves and a bucket of rice and beans. Not the greatest food but enough to hold wife (or me) and daughter a couple days to let things "happen" and then when the anarchy slows down just a little, make way home via the night.

Of course if it was economic collapse and we had vehicles, everything would be a heckuva alot easier to get the kid from school.

I wouldnt stay there more than the first 24-48hrs IMO. Just like after 9-11 there will be a lull IMO where everyone is walking around with the zombie confused look trying to understand whats going on but within 12hrs the criminal will swarm high value targets and mobs will swarm the stores for supplies than as things decline other targets will be looked at for "valuables" such as storage units which have been popularized on tv with "storage wars" and auction tv reality shows claiiming there is fortunes in them steel boxes.
Again just my opinion an I have been wrong before, even this morning:)

Klayton, you made some great points sir. Thats why we prep ya know, for the unknown. To be better off than the majority in the unknown. Where my wife is aiming to work, its a 30 mile one way trip, and thats on a normal day. If it was an "abnormal" day, then it would be an interesting trek to say the least. We really wont know until next fall. We are hoping to be moved by then and hopefully closer to her work. I worry more about her and the boys than me. If we move were we want to, I will be 70 miles from home while at work. And I would have to travel right through downtown Atlanta. Which would be kinda like that walking dead episode where Rick goes to the ATL. But you did mention a great point though, keeping a cache of supplies at one of those small storage units nearby. That makes a ton of sense.

As for those kids, in the PAW, we all are going to have to make decisions that may make us bad people in a sense, but in the "unthinkable" I think I would worry about my family and their safety over ANYTHING. I could leave the kids some food and water, even though I know there would be a full staff there, hopefully, someone else could take on that burden.

Your right about one thing, a non EMP and I am wherever I need to be in my car and that would be like Dessert!

You might consider some more research on that.
EMP consists of a whole rainbow of frequencies and wavelengths. The holes in your screen must be smaller than the smallest wavelength of the pulse. The microwave oven is designed for microwave and larger wavelengths. I would shoot for a solid shield like an ammo can with a copper braid gasket or a metal garbage can with a well fitting lid.
There is also a question of grounding. Some are for, some argue against. My opinion is that the ground wire may act as an antenna to collect a charge.
