  • Conquering Your Fears

Guys a few weeks ago I took a huge step. 32 years ago, I fell out of a treestand that had a rotted support beam. Ever since if I got more than 3 or 4 rungs up a ladder I got dizzy and started panicking. I decided this was stupid and I had to get over it. I asked a friend who instructs outdoor classes if he taught rappelling as I was deathly afraid of heights and wanted to get over it. We met in the Red River Gorge today and after setting up and a safety brieifing I stepped off a 50 foot cliff. I am still jacked up and haven't really been able to sleep. The most amazing part is my daughter was with me and she got to witness it. I wanted to teach her that no matter what the challenge, if you want it bad enough you can do it. Not only did I do it once, but 3 times. The video is by no means graceful and there isn't much technique, but the point is really that I did it. I kicked my biggest fear in the nuts.......

So what is holding you back from conquering something that has been holding you back?

      Good on ya!!!

I was on rope when I was 15 at a cliff near Gainesville, FL at night when I fell about 40 feet on rope. The Lord was with a stupid kid that night as all I ended up with just a sprained ankle. It took me a couple years to get serious about getting back on rope after that.

Later all we would use was the cheap military (stretchy) green rope (I hate that stuff) 1 strand and a D ring. Never been a fan of figure 8's.

It's a great confidence building exercise, unfortunately around here it wouldn't be too useful in regular use though.

      Good on ya!!

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

For me it was thunderstorms. Oh i hate heights also at least low heights. It bothers me to on a high ladder or the edge of a roof at 20 or 30 feet. I can can go out on a boom of a tower crane 200 + feet w/o a harness (don't tell OSHA) and it not bother me a bit.

Anyway when younger i hated T Storms, then i read in G. Liddy's autobiography "Will" about how he conquered his fear of dirigibles and rats, what i did was made my self sit out in a storm and set through it. Now i actually like being out in them and enjoy swimming in Tstorms immensely.

Fear is a good thing. It normally keeps us from doing something so stupid that it could kill us. :)
