  • Might be prudent to...

Pull some cash- not all- out of your bank account in the next day or so. I don't expect nor think that TS will HTF over this debt crisis/budget crappola, but better safe than sorry.

What will you miss doing this? On $5K you might lose what, 2 or 3 cents in interest? LOL

You can put it back in next week.

For the worry worts- no one should mess with you on less than $10K cash withdrawal.

For the real paranoid types- spend $2. getting the local "Auto trader" type magazine, find a car about the same price, dog ear that page, fold it over, circle the listing, carry that in with you. Talk incessantly to the teller how you always wanted a 1972 Gremlin (whatever), the guy said cash only, I may be back next week to deposit this if I don't make the deal, etc.

It's YOUR money. It may just very well may be safer with you for the next few weeks.

Yes, it suddenly it becomes TEOTWAWKI the money won't be worth anything, but it won't be worth anything in the bank either now will it? ;)

EARLY ON, cash will be used IMO, very early on. People always delude themselves and they will think that things will get better. It's in that early "it's all going to be over tomorrow" phase of a major scenario that you could get rid of the cash.

Cash in hand is better than in the bank if things go futher south. I try to keep out at least a month's worth of money to pay bills, food, etc.

Purchasing a bit of foodstuffs above and beyond what you normally would (including any storage) would be a prudent act also. If the dollar loses any value, any purchases made prior to the depreciation will increase in value...if it is even available.

I spoke with my bank branch manager (and long time friend) a couple of weeks ago about removing cash and trying to stay under the radar.
He said the "any substantial cash withdrawal" is now reported to Homeland Security automatically by central office accounting software! I asked about staying under $10k and he said better to stay under $2k.

Well, that's part of living under socialism, but it's YOUR money.

Honestly sounds like an accounting nightmare with all the mexicans and other folks that deal JUST in cash.

                  My late mother's advice ...
"Honey, ... No matter how bad the economy gets ... no matter how low the market goes ...
... Those who were richer than you, before, will still be richer ... and ...
... Those who were poorer than you, before, will be still be poorer. ... Hold your ground".

She also told me that people will keep brushing their teeth and wiping their arses and putting bandages on their boo-boos.

Friend of mine called this past Monday and said that she was going to take out cash to pay the bills and buy food for a month. The pastor at the chuch she goes too, told the congregation they had better do something like that just in case the government defaults. Last week the pastor told them to have at least 4 to 6 weeks supply of food and water on hand.

For the last 18-20 years, any one cash withdrawal over $10k required the bank to fill a report out and send to the fed. It was to monitor money laundrying. Now that Obama's DHS is in charge the reporting amount and manner of reporting completely changed. DHS, in my opinion, has become way too powerful without sufficient accountability. IMHO

Always a good idea to have extra cash on hand. Next time you drive past the bank, pull in and cash a check for 3 or 4 hundred and then do it again in a couple of days. Do it on a payday and it will just be one of many. When you write a check always do for an extra 20 or so if you can. Stash that 20 for that rainy day. my 1 1/2 cents worth.

Very soon, Congress will raise the debt ceiling. If it does not, it would be the greatest unforced error in American history, a self-inflicted wound that is as disastrous as it was avoidable.
