Seriously, the best way to make sure this all doesn't happen is to elect the right people.

There are no right people , once a politician reaches a certain level in politics is about politics and not helping people , thats why they are called politicians and not peopleticians hehe . But on serious side , they are all bought and paid for at some level . They want what is best for them , if they try to look out for the people they are labeled nutjobs and other things . Once they get out of the county seats where you can call their office and talk to them about your busted street light , they dont care about the common person , its about filling their pockets or following the agenda set for them by the higher ups who are seriously bought and paid for .

WHEW this was a loooooooooooooooong thread...

May I share a story with you guys? (I know I know, here he goes again)

Many moon ago, when my older daughter was still living at home (I think she was around 15). She got upset one day when she asked if her friends so-and-so could come inside. She knows the rule, nobody except family, comes inside the house. So I had to sit her down and have another father to daughter talk. Baby, the things we have in this house most people will not understand. They will label you a "nutcase" because you have 10 years worth of stored grain in your pantry. They will ask why there is a gun mounted on a wall in every room. They will NOT understand. Most importantly, they will TALK. Maybe not their intention, but they will talk, and the word will get around eventually to some punks, and we will be targetted for a robbery.

Well, fast forward to two years ago. She is married with child, and her and her husband LOVE to have friends over all the time for cookouts and just friendly social drinking (she learned the drinking part from him, her mom and dad do NOT drink socially). Well she calls, Dad, someone stole my favorite necklace. I think it was one of Will's (her husband) friends girlfriends. I told her I was sorry and we talked about what happened. Less than one week later they were robbed, and all her jewelry in the bedroom, their computer, and their two televisions stolen. She called me and said, I should have never let them know everything we had right Daddy? I just told her, she is not hurt, that is all that matters. Then we discussed them moving to a new apartment and limiting who knew exactly where they live...

Good point Klayton. My neighbor told me years ago about watching out who my kids bring to the home because of firearms. He said this " You wont have to worry about your kid so much and them touching guns because you are bringing them up right withguns around. What you have to worry about is there friends because they will pressure your kids to see your dads guns." I have taken this to heart and try my best to live our lives keeping a low profile. But my biggest worry is my family (mom dad brother sister ) because I have tried to get them to open there eyes and do a little prepping. Ha ha what do you think the world is going to end haha. Well you can guess there first stop will be if the SHTF. I think it will be hard for the Gov to go house to house going gun food grabbing. I think the line will be drawn before they get my household.

I guess we are getting off topic, but when I was in high school we had someone break in and steal all my dads tools from the garage, among other things. These were the tools he made his living with, so it was bad, because being self employed and without thousands of dollars in tools you need to earn a living isn't a great situation. The point is that the police officer who showed up to take the report said that a huge percent, something like 80 percent of all thefts and robberies are from people who have been to your house before. Maybe not a friend. But someone he brought over one day. Anyway, it really is a risk to allow too many folks in to your domain.

And once again - sorry for the earlier, out of line commentary.

I agree with being very private about who knows what about what you have, including a lot of family. Most crimes occur because folks know what you have. My parents have social events at their house frequently. They've been broken into 3 times and had 2 attempts. You'd think they'd learn! As far as fearing the government taking what I have is the least of my concerns. I fear hungry / starving neighbors. So, "I have nothing and am broke." I say this even to my family.
