Well for the past two days or so I've been out of the loop. Seems that I suddenly loss my connection to the net.

First you follow the standard directions to re-set your router and your modem. Ok - after you do that SEVERAL times, you call the cable company who tell you to do it again!

You call the router customer service folks - and get the same message - re-set it again. Then they add - re-download the software.

Then you call the cable company demanding a repair man - who comes, can't find a thing wrong, but installs a new modem anyway.

Then you re-set you router only to discover - you still can't connect to the net.

In frustration, I purchased a new router - and miracle or miracles - I got connected.

Now, during the time I was our of a workable router - my beautiful MacBook found 3 networks all of which had locks and 2 of which let me jump on board. The first time it happened I thought my router was finally working as was shocked to see someone else's network pop up. So, never assume you are completely secure. NEVER. Both these private networks had the lock boxes clearly shown beside the network name and I should have been prompted for a password but was not.

My non functional Cisco router is only 4 months old! Of course I don't have a receipt, but I'm going to try and return it anyway.

Just remember - you are really never secure.

Wow MB you use the 2 products I just abhor with every IT fiber in my being :) lol.

Don't broadcast the Network SSID, use MAC address filtering (not much but every little bit helps), don't let your router or modem be pinged, and make sure that you use strong passwords to access your wireless network.

Sorry to hear about your router, I have had issues with the Cisco routers and can't stand their proprietary Protocols. I will go to this brand next HP Procurve, current model V110 Wireless-N Router.

I agree about Cisco, and will never buy anything else made by that company. As for the Apple - what can I say - the best computer EVER. I actually owned a McIntosh in 1984. it's still in the attic. I used the window's operating system (actually stolen from Steve Jobs) and HP and Dell computers. I found them cheap imitations of the real thing. Don't mind proprietary companies - if they don't make money - they don't invent!

Most neighbors don't have the knowhow to hack into your network in order to see what you're doing.

Now...if you see an unmarked windowless van parked across the street...then be worried. :D
