We had a discussion about the characters extravagant costumes and I stated that they really were not that over the top. The family thought I was nuts until I pointed out the British wigs and heavy white makeup, the Samurai culture, Gesha girls, Actors red carpets etc etc in which where society believes itself becoming soooo modern, educated and civilized especially over the remainder of the population it attempts to garnish themselves to show the seperation thru costumes.
It even happens on smaller scales in school with cars and clothes, the gun range with operator grade clothing and brand name weapondry/accesories and work environments with uniforms that have shiny embelishments.
When the middle ground (middle class) is lost during certain periods of history the dramatic costumes become more extravagant to show the complete seperation between rich and poor or those in power from the serveants.

About a quarter of the way through the 2nd book. The books are expounding on a lot of the stuff in the movie. Saw the movie 5 times. We only go to a movie a couple times during the year, so much out is plain stupid, full of gay crap or just the Will Smith/Jackie Chan constant scene shifting explosions/fast moving crap to keep the A.D.D. crowd's attention for more than 30 seconds. It gets irritating to your eyes after a while. But when we found one or two a year that in our minds are decent, we'll go and see it several times.

We do the same with DVD's. Don't have regular TV. When we find something we like, we watch it repeatedly.
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

I did buy the first book, and then found out a friend had already bought and read the whole trilogy. It was a day each for the next two books. I am not sure if I will go to the movie or not, because I am not sure how faithful the movie can be to the book, but when it comes out in dvd I will probably get it. The second and third books really complete the picture, although the one thing I see as a problem is the completely secular perspective, God and churches are nowhere to be found.

Wow, I wish I had the extra time to read fiction, I have to rethink my way of life,, need more time to unwind, relax and post less. then again maybe NOT.

I occasionally read fiction, and once in a while watch a video, only watch live tv incidentally at someone else's house. This particular trilogy may stimulate some thinking in the mass of sheeple regarding the Kapitol aka District of Crooks, and their destructive relationship to what they seem to believe are their subjects or serfs. It also brings to the forefront the nature of the distraction via "bread and circuses" or in the case of Hunger Games, more of the circuses and less of the bread.
