  • "The Hunger Games"

Just finished the first in a series of 3 books call The Hunger Games. It was written for young adults but is so good it's crossed over to the adult market.

I can highly recommend it. The story concerns a future North America which is broken into districts. Seems all the districts work and stave to keep the capitol in riches.

A young girl who has been surviving by hunting and gathering is forced to compete in a deadly game for the entertainment of the capitol.

Anyway, there is lot of info about gathering edible food, hunting and snaring game, i.e. surviving. The best part is that there is not ONE word of profanity and not one sex scene in the entire book.

          Strong Female Characters
Graceling- A personal favorite. The main character, Katsa, is actually an assasin! Which is awesome because, honestly, who likes a 'heroine' that can't tie her shoes without putting herself .

Went and saw the movie yesterday I actually thought it was pretty good. It's a movie and maybe geared for women more than men soo there is alot of drama but I enjoyed the general theme.

My BIL took my 12 year old niece to the movie (she has read the books). He was very impressed.

I got started on them after my wife read the first (Hunger Games) and kept audibly reacting to what she was reading (gasp, sob, oh crap!, etc...)...I asked her about it, she gave me a synopsis and I decided to read it when she was done. Just finished the last book in the trilogy less than an hour ago. I read all three in about 5 days (in between working 12 hour shifts). Fantastic books...couldn't put them down. I am strongly encouraging my kids to read them as well.

Saw one of the books at Costco, briefly scanned it but didn't buy it because I wasn't sure I wanted to spend on fiction. Guess I will have to spring for it after all.
On the topic of books at Costco, I did buy Born to Run, which has a very interesting perspective on running, and how we have been running wrong because of the Nike heels. It also has some good information about the Tarahumara tribe in Mexico which runs extreme distances through rough mountain terrain, and in part sustains on Chia seeds.

Finished the book. Pretty good. The end has some eye opening things. Don't want to give anything away, but make an example of people. Seems pretty realistic.

I saw it today. It didn't live up to its hype. Frankly I thought it kinda sucked. It wasn't a horrible movie it wasn't nearly as terrible as LOTR the direction on this movie was actually pretty decent. The character development was non existent. I could understand that if casting had been horrid but come on Donald Sutherland? That man can play evil. I've only seen a few other actors who could truely beat him in an "evil role". Completely under utilized. The woman who played the Mom played Trixie on Deadwood. She had maybe 3 scenes in this movie. Completely under utilized. Non of the villians were even slightly believable. the kid at the end from District 1 did a good job with what screen time he had. If he had more time on screen it would have been a much better movie. The Rue Character needed more time on screen. This will sound cold but i wasn't moved by her death. She simply wasn't on screen long enough nor developed long enough to form an emotional attachment too.

The wardrobe people should never be allowed to work in Hollywood again. The clothes and makeup were the worst I have seen since Batman and Robin. wow. I understand the Capital citizens were done up and serfs in the districts were done down in order to contrast the haves and have nots but those clothes , make up, and hair of the Capital citizens was horrible. Absolutley the worst ever.

I didn't hate this movie but I won't watch it again.

Sadly a much much better movie is at the theater and has tanked thanks to non existant marketing and that's John Carter.

No bad language, no extra marital sex, and a great plot and development. When that movie was over the audience i was in CLAPPED. at the Hunger Games people hit the isles as soon as the movie was over.

Wanna go see a really good flick in the theater? Go see John Carter.
