I'm in the same boat as RPD....about 40 miles from work to home. I will assess the situation and make sure it is an EMP, then quickly fill water bladder and nalgene that I have in my backpack in the car. Check car to see if it works, mixed reports if cars will start and run, and then start hiking home if car is fried. I will tell the staff what I think happened and advise them what they may want to do and what not to do. They won't want to make the trip home with me as they all have families to go home to and they won't be able to hike 40 miles. I won't spend much time explaining things as I will want to get going before many sheeple understand what has happened. I want to get as far as I can before people start forming groups and see me as "prepared". If I encounter slowdowns, I'll stay low during day and hike at night, staying off roads. I have looked at watering holes which are plentiful and even "safe havens" that I feel would be safe for some shut eye time. I drive this route daily and have looked extensively at the area. Depending on time of day EMP hits, will depend on the amount of traffic on the road. If it hits before rush hour, there is minimal traffic. After rush hour more traffic but not like the interstate. I plan on doing short stops for food and maybe sleep for and hour and get going again. The route I plan on traveling have woods and brush most of the way, but there will be some "road time". Quick, quiet and armed is the plan I have. The weather is the unknown.

Ever think of storing a bicycle close to or at work? Maybe have a giant cardboard sign to hang around your neck while making your get away saying THE WORLD IS GOING TO END! Bicycle while saying prayers out loud. Nobody, I mean Nobody messes with a doomsayer trying to preach. :)
Depending on your ability and location, renting a storage cubicle, making a faraday cage inside it, and parking a spare vehicle in it. Then EMP hits, you make your way at night to storage unit. Get the vehicle out and make for home didi mau.

Klayton, good ideas. I have thought about a bicycle and just don't know where I could store it (I have a small vehicle). I could keep it at work, but that wouldn't help me if I was driving home when it hit. The only storage place on my way home, not too far out of my way is not in a very friendly area. I would rather skip that area altogether and plan on getting by it as soon as I can. I have some "spare" cash with me and have always thought about buying a bicycle from someone (or a kid). I would offer them $50 and see if they bite at the offer. I figure if EMP happens, FRN's will be soon more worthless than now.
My backpack is a civilan type so I don't look like the "military type". Clothes will be bland and earth tones for the most part. I wear sneakers at work, so they will be my shoes for the trip. I forgot to say I have some bottled water in my car at all times in case it hits when I'm driving.Protecting the sheep from the wolves that want them, their family, their money and full control of our Country!

one more idea, don't give up any OPSEC, but what is the cost of the cheapest 1bdrm or economy apartment next to your work?
sometimes (depending on your income) it would be best to rent one out, park a scooter inside + a week supply of food and water (to allow the worst to blow over)... then make your move home with your faraday cage protected scooter :)

Okay, to add a little spice to the scenerio, suppose you see a flash out of the corner of your eye just before everything goes dark? You surmise that someone has just popped off a nuke. You have no idea where, how far away, nada. What do you do? Personally, I think I would be screwed, because there is no way that school has shelter facilities, plus the undergrads there are, from what I've seen so far, more like the third video that was posted after the economic meltdown. Not a pretty picture. Would it be worth trying to make it home? If the nuke was to the east, probably, since the prevailing winds here are west to east, but if they were from the west, and close enough that the flash was prominent, it would probably be kiss the donkey goodbye time.

PS. A thrift store bike or one found by a buddy cough.cough. can be chained to a tree, under some cover in one of those wooded areas...and left there. Of course every few months i would check it(dry rot tires etc),move it etc as needed. This would be a good place for a small cache as well ( cheap tire pump....mre or 2,mabye 100 rounds of sidearm ammo).
Even a cheap bike will be faster than on foot.................40 miles is about 4 days if your doing 10 miles a day and takening your time not being spotted......set up PSjr with some comm's so you can stay in tought with the rest of the PS pack......;)
When i drive to areas i go to often i look for places that can be lay ups, places to hide stuff, and for water sources.
Ive always thought of doing an in town "bug out" or hike to put alot of what is being talked here to the test.........
aka msP dropping me off at a 2-3 day distance and walking "home".....would make for some good info...Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

First off, before anything, I would pray to god for protection and assistance. The second prayer would be to St. Michael, who I feel more akin to and also who I usually ask for help on a certain issue. (Before anyone jumps on me about praying to an angel first, I can only say this; God (In my most humble of opinions) is a very, very busy being and I am a speck in the universe. In truth I do not like asking for help (gave me hands, legs, air to breathe, a usually functioning brain and a soul- to not use those would be a sin in my minds eye), but when I know that I am approaching something that needs a little guidance or help, that is a good time to take a knee/break and ask.
Back to the question at hand:
Do I stand up and say, “I know what is going on! Listen to me…”
ABSOLUTELY NOT! In fact, more than likely it would be in your best interests to sit down and shut up. People are funny with all the information they see and are fed in a single day. Not imagine all of that constant flow of info- (i.e. Facebook, cell phones, lap tops, I-pads, TV and other devices) suddenly going off the air. Besides, some of these people are not into listening or have forgotten the ability to listen and comprehend. You could start a panic and or, like someone already pointed out- “you could be a terrorist”. Not exactly the end of a really crappy day.
I will more than likely stay at said work/school and wait a while until others leave to make sure it is safe. Also, I would go in and sit in the bathroom for a little while, hopefully with a working flashlight out of my kit and sit on the pot for a while. I know it sounds strange, but I would rather make sure I didn’t have to go while walking back to home to get home.
At some point, I would head out to the vehicle and get the BOB and start filling the Nalgene bottles and bladders with water. At this point, I would begin walking/jogging/cycling home. For those who ride or have considered bicycles, I would wait until dark to ride home. A lot of people who need transportation are not going to be entirely friendly when they see you with a backpack and a bicycle. Also, when people begin migrating, they don’t exactly stay on the sidewalk either, so the less road hazards the better.
Agent K from MiB stated; A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow."Fate rarely calls upon us at a moment of our choosing"- Optimus Prime

Ive got a typical "get home" route set and planned on paper for the experiment. I just need to recon some of the more urban areas along with some of the not so urban spots to ensure safty on my end.
The trip would pass through 3 cities..with a population over 110K to deal with and pass through 2 major crime areas....and take an avg of 1.5 days( if pace allows).and be done with a typical GHB 3 day pack load out.................i think it will be fun.....wanna come along for the ride?
right now im weighing the "educational" benifits it would serve for the not so inclined internet masses verse my safty/time/effort( it would all be recorded cam and dvr and even updated live if the oppurtunity opens)Last edited by protus; 02-03-2011, 05:38 PM.Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

P weigh that out carefully, dunno about your route but mine includes trespassing mostly just across empty fields and farmland but nonetheless not mine, and would only be done post SHTF. Mine also includes a lot of night movement for avoidance purposes. I just added a bottle of scent away in the GMHB to be sprayed and dumped prior to movement to help with house dogs noses.Knowledge is Power, Practiced Knowledge is Strength, Tested Knowledge is Confidence

You know all the typical places folks say that they will go when travelling for that " bug out home" lol
Sides that tresspass, vagrants, thugs and most of all dogs ( as some areas skirt close to occupied homes). are concerns......but hey all for the gloryyyyyyyyy of the interwebz...LOLHey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

Hummer makes a bike that folds up. My buddy had one until he upgraded to a Gary Fisher. My old neighbor, Special Forces, told me that they had bikes like that in Afghanistan that had gun mounts on em.....

One word of warning about this idea. A couple of years ago, I decided I needed to get back into shape, so I borrowed my daughter's mountain bike. It has the skinny seat on it. I was on it for almost three blocks before the pain started. It turns out that we have something called a pudendum nerve, and if you sit on it wrong, it hurts. I'm not talking a little bit of pain here, I'm talking get off and push the bike home kind of pain. In other words, if your plan includes a bicycle, get it now and ride it. Figure out whether or not you're comfortable with it, and if not, buy another seat for it. Those good old days when you could jump on anything and ride it may be gone. I know they were for me.
