  • 70's ish mail Jeep

Saw a 1970' ish old Mail Jeep for sale. AMC General I think was the manufacturer.

Pros- set up to run on propane which could be bad could be good. Don't know enough about longevity of that. I know we could refuel at home or worse case, people will have LP tanks but without electricity it won't do many people good, might be able to trade/scrounge for more??

Cons- wasn't 4X4. Kinda thinking what's the point of a Jeep like that if it wasn't 4x4?

    Thoughts?

Those things crash, watch the movie again...

White elephant; if it runs , it could be OK around the fields. Parts could be problematic. Remember, it is already 40+ years old. It might be cheaper to get a beater jeep and convert it to propane..

    Have fun...

Another con...mixed up parts. My MIL had one - GM engine mated to a Chrysler tranny going to a Ford Rear end. Needless to say, repair parts were like hen's teeth.

      Proceed with extreme caution!

We were already leaning against, but thanks for the responses.

        ANY pros or all cons?

          DJ series.
Iirc if its older it'll be Kaiser /amc ...
Parts could be mixed matched if newer aka 80s.
Rear ends had lockers iirc as well.
Is the motor one of the LP /gas motors like GM had out for a bit. If so it can run on both with a flip of a switch.
Done side is parts. Body is different than the normal CJ 5...m38 ...
That's the issue.more research on the one your looking at will help.

          Pros -
Instant small medical or recon truck...LP will be quite compared to gaser.
can be turned into a hut...shed....tree house...chicken coop. LOL

Go smack pops around for letting that CJ go so cheap LOL

Since the cons stand out, I'll put this out for consideration...

              Pros:
              Small
              Maneuverable
              Lightweight
Does well on back roads - if you take it slow
              Easy to load/unload
              Not many accessories to break

Yeah I should have thought about that old jeep years and years ago.

I drove it through that creek one time.... I knew it would go off road.

                  Get a model or year.
I can't see any DJ series that has LP off a quick search. There was an electric one in the early 70 s.
Engines ranged from the typical amc. Six Banger (common) to 4 cycle. Made by Chevy (Nova) to Chrysler /Audi four cylinder s.
Rear ends look common Jeep stuff...with lockers /limited slip. The 70 s depending on series ran a larger 6 cylinder radiator ...on a 4 cylinder. This would be good for long hauls or idle times. Amc ones had stronger gear boxes I've read as well.

LP thing has me hmmmmmm....but ill look. Grandfather had a GMC van that was LP /gas but that was a v8.

Ill bet that LP set up is a conversion ......

Honestly get a year it was made it'll help. But your looking at GM motors or amc motors. All decent if its manual its good...even the autos were torque flights etc not wimpy ones like you'd see in a car.

If its under 1k ...body ain't rotted through and you can get info on the LP set up....it would be a useful """toy "" around your area.

It's a conversation. Everything looked the same under the hood except no carb. Well, you know my mechanical prowess also.... There could have been a flux capacitor in there for all I know... LOL

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Small carbs are not hard to come by. Running on Propane is a plus sine they not cause oil dilution in the cylinders and overall
they run cleaner both exhaust and engine internals. My Uncle ran his f100 on propane for awhile. Had a 100 gal tank and could hook up small tow motor tanks as spares.

Ran it out of fuel once, it just starts to slow down then stop totally different than gas.
