  • Cannibalize a car

    Here's an interesting idea-

    In the PAW their is likely to be countless scores of non functioning vehicles around.

    These could be a good source of raw materials for various projects, remanufacturing, etc. to glean from.

    Take an average car that's now not running- what all could you pull off of it and what could you do with it?

    For example- seatbelts are good quality strong webbing, you could make Swiss seats out them, pack straps, etc.

    The list of possibilities is quite long, especially if you have some tools available.

      Probably only limited by need and by imagination. Some friends of mine have 3 old saburu wagans that make great greenhouses once all of the seats were removed. Easy to venilate, etc.
      Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

        i would suggest that the lights alone with with the battery would be useful.
        The alternator to recharge, the battery or series of them.
        The fuel pump to transfer fuel.
        The catalytic converter has a good amount of precious metals ( Platinum, Palladium and rhodium Cerium, iron, manganese and nickel are also used,Copper can be used
        wire is copper
        wheels and frame for a trailer
        glass for a lot of things
        radio for listening
        Speakers for amplification of radio or music

        I even remember with fabrication a mill out of car (but i guess it was a running car.

          A manual shear and a brake, and you'd be in the custom metal business.
          What a long, strange trip it's been.....

            most likely the batteries would be the first thing removed from them. In JWR's book Patriots one of his characters buys bayonet light converters for all the spare bulbs left in broke down vehicles. I have looked into these a little bit but don't know much about them.

            Like a previous post said only limited by the tools and imagination you have. Arrowheads; Spears; Garden Hoe; Shelter;

              Depending on your retreat, the seats could make a bed or just a place to get you off the ground. There would be plenty of flammable materials as well. Wire could be used for trip wire, snare wire or just for general purpose lashing to preserve rope/paracord. Red plastic lenses could be cut/broken to be placed over flashlights to maintain night vision and also help preserve OPSEC when operating flashlights outdoors at nite. Many of us have lights that have red/green bulbs, but not everyone or every light in your retreat may have them. Seat belts could be used as makeshift tourniquets if needed. Glass could be used in making a solar oven(s). Hydraulics may be able to be rigged up to help split logs for firewood. Water pump as a water pump although I would not use for potable water.

                Patriotic Sheepdog your list is very good. Having never looked under the hood of a car this information is valuable. I know, from reading other sites, a car is a good dehydrator for food.

                  I know that some Bow Makers now will speed the curing time of staves by placeing them on the dash of the truck. this helps speed the drying time.

                    The following article, has a use for some of the cables and the alternator

                      The fluids are useful, some can be burned for fuel. Once you gut the inside, you can make a fairly decent place to live. Take the hood and deck lid off to make a porch or some shade. Tires are good for planters, even for fuel if you don't mind a lot of smoke. The hood and trunk probably have some insulation in them. Parts can easily be fashioned into weapons, knives and other tools. If you are careful with the old sealed beams you can probably get one apart to make a small solar oven. I have seen old cars used for chicken coops and dog houses too. That is hard core country.

                        @eeyore: interesting

                        I made a vertical axis wind powered generator from the motor of a treadmill about 4 or 5 years ago, for the neighbor kid's treehouse (only renewable energy treehouse I know of-LOL) powers a 4-led light and a very small television...

                          you could also use things like transmission pan,oil pan and read end cover as pots and pans for cooking.may take some time and effort to get rid of the grease/oil but i think it would be worth it

                            This idea isn't original, but in the novel "Patriots", a man took tires and used them to make rubber soles for moccosans. I think this is one of the best ideas I have heard yet. The one thing that will wear out that will leave so many SOL is shoes. Even if you have ten pairs of shoes stashed away, they will go faster than you can wear them out. It would be hard to see my brother walking around with rags tied to his feet, when I have two pairs of size 11s hiding.

                              The copper can be melted down and used in some casting applications. It would takes some know how and a hot fire.
