        xd,
yee hah on a macho rig... how big of a plow will that thing pull? 4 row?

        ld,
congrats on the "paid cash." in my work, i learned about folks with their car and house payments... i can tell you that you are in a very small percentage of folks.
very very few folks pay cash for their car...
high mpg and room for the family and all the gear you had at that seminar...
        !!
now you've got the fuel savings and no car payment... mighty good financial management!

we moved "out from town" and realized a high mpg car would be necessary.
        toyota camry hybrid.
        driving 75 to 80 with a load we get 37 to 38
around town 42 to 44 if we pamper it.
mixed driving. 41 to 42 pretty easy to do.
helps offset that pick up truck.

if we have an emp,,, probably bad news for the electronics on that one!

I get 30 to 33 - depending on the type of fuel I use. But it is a small Dodge car/hybrid/thing lol
The truck - no idea. The gas guage doesn't work, and hasn't for as long as we have owned it. So we don't know what the mpg is, but we know it ain't good!

When I had my '94 Ford F150 6cyl truck, it got about 24 mpg. When I bought it, it took around $40 to fill both tanks, now it takes $40 to fill the 12/13 gal tank on my little car. Bah!

i pay more in gas than my mortgage LOL whats sad is i passed up a place that cost more closer to town because of the price and well..it was closer to town.wanted to be clear of the fsa ..and im paying what i would there in gas LOL.

think me and the wife are gonna carpool and save the $$$
just hard for me to get rid of my truck because it comes in handy now that we are out here...and i really dont wanna get back into the car payment deal ...

back in 08 I got rid of my beloved but fuel hungry grand marquis for a slightly newer civic with alot lower milage.

smartest move i ever did. i get 29-31 around town. a tank of gas goes two weeks. my last road trip i got 38,36,and 39 mpg. the car has 171k on it and the only wrong with it is the AC is busted.

120k is what I have put on the civic. 120k since getting rid of the merc. at 20mpg in combined driving thats 6k gallons of gas. at $3 a gallon its $18k over 5 years. the civic gets about 33 in combined driving for 3600 gallons of gas consumed.

thats 10,800 in gas. a savings of over 7k in gas over 5 years. plus the civic has had low maintence and repair costs in that time.

one of my frugal freinds just bought a new prius c hybrid. its a neat looking little car (doesn't look like the san fran mobiles the other models look like) and its gets 50 in town and 46 on the highway.

you'd save atleast 1500 bucks a year in gas driving a civic rather than a truck to work and back. and thats just too and from work.

Prius - big enough for my stuff and at an average 48.6 mpg, I can afford to buy some more. On flat terrain with the cruise on and running 65 mph, I can average 50.2 - but 65 would get me run over here.

trust me ive done the math..its just the payment deal lol. i was debt free (no major payments except utilities cost) until we relocated ,,im spoiled on not paying out.

im shopping around for the best bang for the buck or alternative . even some of the small suvs get 30 mpg these days . but a small call that gets 35+mpg will save me around 100-150$ per month depending on ins/tax/payment options.

Mid-2000's Toyota Corolla's run almost forever... My wife's now has 120k on it and looks great, runs great... Those Toyota engines are everywhere, so tossing in a rebuilt or used engine is less than a day job for those with appropriate tools. We have a manual tranny, so long life there... Rides smooth as glass...

So you don't have to break the bank to get affordable MPG transportation...

That said, I bought my Tundra new, on sale, at 0% APR with my FJ trade-in that got me very fair money. It is very nice to have a full factory warranty and everything brand new so YOU can make it yours in the way you want to, like drive it hard, or drive it easy, etc... Every used car was once a new car, so someone has to buy new... And if you buy new on the RIGHT vehicle, for the right price, with low or 0% APR, and keep it a long time, I personally think it is smart... But don't worship at the altar of debtfreeness...

                      Good luck...

I don't blame you. My gm was paid for too but the fuel savings was so high it wiped out the small payment I had on the civic. But I drive ALOT.

I have a little japanese 4x4 that gets about 20mpg. My only gas rig. The rest are diesel and get between 8-15mpg. Though I only drive those when I'm hauling or towing. I don't drive all that much anymore though. No daily commute or anything like that. If they made a hybrid diesel/electric 4x4 truck I'd be interested.

3/4 ton diesels seem to be popular in the city. Big lift kits and fancy wheels. Never seem to be hauling anything though. I guess they just like burning money.

                            2003 Toyota Matrix 5-speed
                            33 mpg
                            245,000 miles
Amsoil all but one or two oil changes (then was full synthetic)
Only had brake pads replaced once at 80,000 miles because my mechanic (friend) said and I quote, "but it has 80,000 miles and, and that's just not right". I now have 160,000 miles on that set he put in. I just go and stop very little I guess.
Can haul a bunch of stuff inside.
