Being EMP resistant would be high on my criteria list, actually even higher than 4WD.

I agree on EMP. My opinion is this: EMP is the single 1 most dangerous threat the country by what of its sheer destructive power than anything else. I'd rather see 20 major cities take a mega ton blast than the whole country gets EMPed. Everything runs on electronics these days. EVERYTHING. even your lawn mower has electronic ignition. imagine a world were suddenly everything doesn't work. virtually all the cars, the trains, trucks and all the phones, radios and computers are toast in an instant. the m*** starvation would be horrific.

what is your idea of EMP?is everything with wires not going to work?I think that simple solenoids will work(possibly like a starter) and i think that if you could get a carb engine running that it would work.i also agree that it would be horrific! can you imagine people without there morning frapp!lol

The one i have is what i have, it is a Suburban. With 6 kids and dog did not have alot of options, if we all went together.

I do have a pickup F150 (2 wheel) and have a trailer for both, so we could take a little stuff with us, if we had too and the gas to do it.

Looking for a (older) Jeep for my oldest, going to put a old diesel in it. Ideally i would do the same with the Suburban when the engine dies or sooner if i can get the money.

Not exactly ideal..... it is almost ready for paint. I worry it might attract unwanted attention, on the other hand I would hate to abandon a functioning vehicle. We also have an '84 Chevy pickup and an unfinished '69 Convertible 'stang.

Maybe someone can clarify EMP to me. I know what it does and what it is BUT I thought a EMP only affected things that were running/on. Not if they were turned off or not plugged in.

EMP Commission Report on Critical National Infrastructures This is a 200 page report. It can take a while to download if you have a slow connection. http://www.futurescience.com/emp/emp-protection.html Here is another site that explains EMP pretty well. Here is a quote from this site...

"One thing that you'll discover in that Critical National Infrastructures Report is that automobiles and trucks seem to be more resilient against EMP attacks that what is portrayed in most fiction. Although many vehicles would be rendered inoperative, and it will be a regular "demolition derby" on streets and highways, many (but not all) vehicles that are not running at the time of an EMP will be likely to run after they are started (although there is a very high probability that your car will experience electronic damage outside of the electronic ignition system, and your car may have to be started in an unconventional way). It may be necessary to have a maintenance manual for your car so that you, or someone you know, can figure out how to bypass the damaged modules in your car.

Vehicles, especially gasoline vehicles, have to have a robust amount of electromagnetic shielding around the entire electronic ignition system. Otherwise, the ignition noise from all the automobiles would render radio and television sets unusable (especially car radios). Today's automobiles have published standards for electromagnetic shielding, but there is not much consistency in shielding requirements. You can check this list from Clemson University for a partial list of the many and varied standards for electromagnetic shielding of automobiles.

The most difficult part of operating a car after an EMP event (or even a solar superstorm) is likely to be obtaining gasoline. It is very foolish to ever let the level of gasoline in your tank get below half full. In a wide range of emergencies, one of the most valuable things to have is a full tank of gasoline. A solar superstorm will NOT damage your automobile, but by knocking out the power grid, it can make fuel almost impossible to find.

It is important to remember that the last time an automobile was actually tested against nuclear EMP was in 1962. Everything since then has been in simulators that we hope are close to the real thing. "

                        Hope this helps...

In MHO, if an EMP hits we got bigger problems to worry about than what rig will or won't run. That being said, If I won the lotto I'd have the first pic. If I had a better job I'd have the second pic. Being as broke as I am the third pic is what I do have.

This is mine. I don't have a pic of my wife's, but it's a 05 2500 Suburban 4x4 with a 496cu, swing out tire carrier, high lift bumper jack, ect. I wasn't sure if it was EMP proof, so I got the blazer with an older carburated motor. I need to take the chrome off the Blazer because of glare. It even came with a roll cage. Does anyone know if the 05 Chevy's are good for EMP blasts or not? Thanks.

By the way, ajsmith, I like the third rig. Probly would've been my first pick.
