Scooters?

Ok guys tell me what ya think. I recently saw a guy riding a small scooter called a Honda Ruckus, its only 49cc's but it gets around 100 MPG. Yamaha also makes one called the Zuma thats fuel injected and supposedly gets 139 MPG. I guess the reason they're both 49cc's is some states allow you to ride on the street without a motorcycle license if the bike is under 50cc's. They both have a kinda rugged offroad look not like the old goofy Vespa's.
Anyway I was thinking with gas prices approaching $5 a gallon maybe having one for the family to use around town might be a good idea.

Personally I would say it depends on the size of town....bigger town = more bad drivers ....smaller town = not as many bad drivers

I assume there is a lot of in town daily driving that consumes enough fuel to offset the purchase. If its going to take years to get back the upfront cost then probably not. If its a matter of a couple of months and your into the black and saving big bucks then go for it. Reset the trip odometer and see how many miles you guys go in a week...then crunch the numbers and see whats what.

We have 2 250cc scooters that get 68mpg. Tank holds 2 1/2gals= about 8$ to fill. We had to get our endorsement but its well worth it.

We are thinking about getting dirt bikes. Hook them on a trailer to the Jeep Grand Cherokee and if the roads become unpassable, even off road, then we could just bug out on the bikes. What are your thoughts? what kind of distance can you go. It would be me and our son on one and Hubby and daughter on the other.

Getting dirt bikes or scooters are a great idea,,, IF you have the skill or can acquire the skill, to use them properly, then there is the other guy to consider.

I have a Gold Wing that I love, but ride rarely, I am afraid of the other drivers, I live on small country roads, they are paved, but not overly wide. I have had to take to the ditch more than once when faced with a driver not paying attention and not sharing the road. I have NO desire to be a hood ornament on a 78 Ford ltd. or to heal from road rash.

In a crisis Two wheels as a BoV could make you an easy target. especially with youngsters on the back. Having the option is a pretty good thing.

Scooters in town are probably a better choice. Can't really beat the fuel economy, but bad drivers can do you soooo much damage in a car, even more on a bike!

As to How far you can go... Really depends on how you are riding, I can make our 250 get about 20 mpg, really gassing on it and playing hard. I took it on a small road trip and got 50 mpg pulling my largeness and keeping the rpms up higher than optimum (geared for fun not economy). I could probably get 65mpg or so at 45mph. holds 2 1/2 gallons including reserve.

So as the Commercials say "Your Mileage May Vary!"
