  • long term storage for diesel

gm all,i have a diesel f350 w 2 factory tanks, one is 20 gal, other 40 gal and an auxillery tank mounted in bed cap 80 gallons, grand total of 140 gallons, lotta storage for fuel was big factor in my buying this truck..now,my friend tells me that bio-diesel has short life, even with stablizer added..so most would say, dont use bio,but in my area (central illinois) i have asked around and there is no place known where regualr diesel is sold..any known stabilizers/ideas would be greatly appreciated..i would hate to have over 400.00 worth of useless fuel if i needed it..any ideas?

better ck out home heating oil, right now it's against the law to use it as there are no road taxes paid on it, but if the SHsTF, all bets are off, there'll be no DOT sticking tanks. do a search and find out if you can mix it with kerocene, then use some PRI-D Complete Diesel Fuel Treatment, talk to a good mechanic out there and some of them know the secretes about tuning the pump so it will burn anything.

I would ask around and find out where the tractors in your area buy there off road diesel for the big farm (agribusiness) type tractors. I would store several 55 gallon drums or 275 gallon tanks.

Real diesel will store a long time (as you stated).

Crossbow is correct, i used to run my home oil heater on off road diesel when i could not afford to fill the tank. I could buy the diesel 5 gallons at a time.

Another option is check out the local fuel oil dealers, they will sometimes (at least in my area, used to) sell off road diesel as well as fuel oil.

We have some off road from 99 that we put up with PRI-D that's still chugging away fine in a diesel genset, tractor and heavy equipment.

As long as you are rotating it even a little (2 year period?) you should have no worries. Now is the time to do a little test,,, if you find that some of your equipment is running a little sluggish, you could always 50/50 mix it in with some fresh(before shtf) to burn through it.
I am running on 3 year old straight grease and no worries. YMMV

a farmer died in 1994. he filled his diesel tank in the spring.
as of last fall 2010, the family was still using fuel from that tank to cut right of way and field roads etc...
additives were added when fuel was bought. i don't know the brand.
16 years. and maybe still going good now. i just haven't asked in the last 6 months.

I have been using Pri-D for my diesel storage, using ULS fuel. Their website doesn't reference biofuels, so you might contact them. http://www.priproducts.com/consumer_products.cfm

The Pri-D does add a few cents per mile, but my '06 Ram seems to like it when I add a little splash with each fill.
